Farmers, labourers block traffic
Nawanshahr, December 6
Irate over the arrest of their fellow worker near Bharthala village on the Jalandhar-Nawanshahr-Chandigarh highway for preventing them from participating in the state-level rally in Chandigarh, activists of different farmers and labourers’ organisations blocked traffic at Kathgarh, Rahon and Chandigarh Chowk here in the district on Tuesday.

Woman commits suicide, paramour booked

Harjinder Kaur (35), resident of Kairowal village, 5 km from here, who burnt herself two days back over the harassment inflicted by her paramour, succumbed to the injuries at a local private hospital on Monday evening.

Dalit youth cremated
Phagwara, December 6
The police heaved a sigh of relief when the family members of Dalit youth Harwinder Singh, resident of Bhaghana, cremated his body kept in a mortuary at Dameli since November 30. Hundreds of villagers attended his funeral this afternoon.

Farmers, labourers block traffic

Irate over the arrest of their fellow worker near Bharthala village on the Jalandhar-Nawanshahr-Chandigarh highway for preventing them from participating in the state-level rally in Chandigarh, activists of different farmers and labourers’ organisations blocked traffic at Kathgarh, Rahon and Chandigarh Chowk here in the district on Tuesday.

Addressing the dharna, Kulwinder Singh Warraich, state leader of All-India Federation of Trade Unions (AIFTU) , Kashmir Singh, Gurdial Singh Rakker (Pendu Mazdoor Union), Harmesh Singh Dhesi (Kirti Kisan Union), Daljit Singh (Democratic Lawyers Association) and Kulwinder Singh Chahal (Naujwan Bharat Sabha) said the activists of different farmers and labourers’ organisation were going to Chandigarh for participating in the state-level rally to press the state government to provide free power facility to the labourers and waive the arrears of power bills of the farmers, but they were prevented from proceeding further.

They criticised the SAD-BJP government for not fulfilling the pre-poll promise in this regard. The traffic blockade continued for about an hour. People had to face a lot of inconvenience. As the traffic jam started at about 3 pm, a number of school buses were also trapped in the blockade.

Woman commits suicide, paramour booked

Tarn Taran, December 6
Harjinder Kaur (35), resident of Kairowal village, 5 km from here, who burnt herself two days back over the harassment inflicted by her paramour, succumbed to the injuries at a local private hospital on Monday evening.

Kala (20), the paramour, has been booked under Section 306 of the IPC by the city police. According to the sources, Kala was forcing Harjinder to leave her husband and three children. Harjinder was not ready to comply with Kala’s demand.

Harjinder Kaur sprinkled kerosene oil over her and set herself on fire. She was admitted to the local Harsukhman Hospital where she breathed her last.

Dalit youth cremated

Phagwara, December 6
The police heaved a sigh of relief when the family members of Dalit youth Harwinder Singh, resident of Bhaghana, cremated his body kept in a mortuary at Dameli since November 30. Hundreds of villagers attended his funeral this afternoon.

Harwinder Singh was found dead in the house of his Jat Sikh beloved Jaspreet on November 30. The police has registered a case against Jaspreet Kaur, her father Chanchal Singh and her cousin on the charges of murdering Harwinder Singh. No arrest has been made so far. — OC
