Jalandhar, December 5
In a brutal act, sleeping undertrials were allegedly beaten up mercilessly by the police on the night of November 20 after violence broke out in the modern jail in Kapurthala. They were cane charged in their cell.

These accusations have been levelled by some of the injured undertrials, admitted to prisoners' ward of local Civil Hospital.

Narrating the incident, an undertrial Sagar of Nagra village said over 40 commandos of the Punjab Police entered his room number 5 of barrack number 3 in the wee hours on November 21, a day after violence had broken out in the jail.

Without finding which undertrials were responsible for the violence, the commandos thrashed 20 undertrials lodged in the room with lathis. Sagar's right leg was fractured in the incident.

The jail authorities did not bother to shift him to the Civil Hospital on their own, he alleged. He was referred to the Civil Hospital Kapurthala three days after his leg was fractured when his mother Harbhajan Kaur had come to meet him in the jail. Sagar was facing trial for remaining proclaimed offender in a case registered under Section 452 of the IPC.

Sagar said he was brought on a cot when his mother had come to meet him. "Later, I was shifted to Kapurthala civil hospital on my mother's insistence. From where, I was referred to Civil Hospital Jalandhar."

Corroborating his statement, another undertrial Jatinder Singh of Mohadipur Jatta village said several policemen brought from outside the jail entered his room number 2 in barrack 3 A. They beat us up with lathis for several minutes. They used batteries for seeing the undertrials for cane charging the undertrials as the power had already been disconnected, he added.

Having sustained injuries on his right arm, he was referred to the Civil Hospital just a day before yesterday after repeated requests. He alleged, "Several injured undertrials are still lodged in the jail. They are neither looked after properly in the jail nor are they being referred to the Civil Hospital."Another undertrial Prince of Tibba Road Ludhiana said, "First he was beaten by two undertrials Sonu Chhikar and Raja Paharia as he was close to their "enemy" undertrial referred as MD. Later the policemen cane charged him and other undertrials of his room in the barrack number 3 when they were sleeping in the night."

Similarly another, undertrial Rajesh Kumar of Ludhiana said, "He became unconscious during lathicharge by the policemen in his room number 9 of barrack number 2 where over 20 undertrials were lodged."
