A special day for differently abled children Kusum Arora Tribune News Service
Jalandhar, February 4 The sports day, which is usually conducted by the school authorities on World Disability Day on December 3, was held today in association with city-based NGO Samarpan. All 130 students of the school, including 57 girls participated in different events like 100, 200 and 400-metre race, three-legged race, banana race, shoe race and much more. Principal of the school Harwinder Kaur said the sports event was an attempt to inculcate a sporting spirit among the differently abled students and provide them exposure in sports in a sound manner. “It was not a sports competition, rather an open platform for the differently abled children to explore their hidden potential in the sports. And all students were given prizes so that at the end of the day, they feel like winners,” she added. She lauded the efforts of the sports teacher of the students, Yogesh Bhandari, who, too, is deaf and dumb. “As he himself is differently abled, he is better able to understand the complexities of his students. He had been putting his extra efforts to train the students and motivate them to participate in the sports events. Probably, that is why all the students took part in the sports day,” she added. The children, after receiving the medals and prizes were on cloud nine and expressed their happiness through gestures. Many of them readily posed before the camera and shared their achievements of the day. “It is just a small attempt to make these differently abled children feel special through such events,” said Harwinder Kaur. The added feature of the day was a special lunch organised by the members of NGO Samarpan for the school students and the faculty. A cultural programme was also presented by the students on the occasion. |
