Friend duped of Rs
4-crore land relief
Greater Noida, November 20 The authority had acquired 8 bigha land of the organisation in the Kasna area for development projects. It has been alleged that the other trustee, Kanwarpal, of Greater Noida had managed to receive Rs 4 crore compensation from the Greater Noida Authority, but did not reveal this to any other trustee. Kanwarpal allegedly put fake signatures of the other trustees on the documents and withdrew the fat amount. He then deposited the amount in a bank. Desh Raj of sector 20 in Noida came to know about the land compensation amount that had been paid much later. When he confronted Kanwarpal for his share, the latter refused to budge. Finally, he approached the police and lodged a written complaint. The Kasna police has registered a case of fraud against Kanwarpal for allegedly usurping Rs 4 crore. The police has not been able to arrest Kanwarpal who is allegedly absconding. |
Doctor duped of Rs 25 lakh for son’s admission
New Delhi, November 20 The accused allegedly duped the doctor on the pretext of securing his son's admission in a reputed medical college of Karnataka. During investigation, it was found that the doctor's cousin, who resides at Hubli, was assured by Renu that her husband Kiran would ensure the boy's admission in the medical college as he had good connections and had been doing this for many years. When the doctor approached Kumar, he posed as a well known social worker of Karnataka. "To assure the doctor, Kiran gave him a hand written statement on his letterhead about possible expenses amounting to Rs 21,63,500 and some other miscellaneous expenses. He also assured the doctor that in case the admission was not arranged, the entire amount would be refunded," said a senior police official. The doctor gave Kiran over Rs 25 lakh in June 2010. After a few weeks, Kiran informed the doctor that the admission had been done and that information about further formalities will be given to him in due course. A few weeks later, Kiran told the doctor that the admission could not be arranged and handed over two cheques of Rs 15 lakh and 10 lakh to the doctor. However, both the cheques bounced. Thereafter, Kiran absconded and switched off his mobile phone. But all this time, Renu kept assuring the doctor that his money will be refunded soon. The doctor then filed a complaint with the anti-fraud and cheating section of the EOW. Several raids were conducted and the accused were finally apprehended from Hubli. During interrogation, it was learnt that a major part of the amount was spent by the accused on a pleasure trip abroad. |
MCD razes 2 tilted houses
New Delhi, November 20 The MCD today demolished two buildings in Shakarpur JJ colony in Rohini Zone in north-west Delhi after they had tilted. Officials said one of the buildings had tilted while another was still being built and they evacuated their residents and brought them down. Two residents of two five-storey buildings in Dabri were also evacuated today when both of them slanted. The police had barricaded the area and municipal officials are likely to decide on the next course of action tomorrow. Both buildings, an official said, would be most likely demolished. The MCD said six more premises in Shakarpur JJ Colony have been served demolition notices as they had developed cracks and appeared unsafe for their residents. The residents have been asked to immediately vacate the buildings. Several houses in different parts of Delhi were partly demolished for the same reasons. However, anger is building among owners of 38 houses which were served eviction notices by the MCD in the wake of the building collapse at Lalita Park in Laxmi Nagar, which killed 69 persons. All of them belong to the same area and claim that they have been singled out because of the fall. The MCD has served notices to many other houses as well. The residents of 38 houses were asked to leave in 72 hours and threatened with demolition, but it has been of little impact. Residents of the houses tore the notices moments after they were stuck on their walls. Some houses have been accused of having a basement while others have been charged with encroaching upon government land. Ramnaresh Gupta, owner of one such house, said there were lakhs of houses in Delhi with basements and still more which had encroached upon the government land. "I have invested my lifetime saving in building my house and live off the rent I get from it. If I listen to the MCD, my family is ruined. Why they did not stop me when I was building the house," the septuagenarian asked? A panel of engineers from IIT, Roorkee, is likely to examine these building before officials decide their next course of action. |
AIIMS faculty interviews begin amid confusion
New Delhi, November 20 But even as the Faculty Association of the AIIMS (FAIIMS) has welcomed the new format, a sense of dissatisfaction remains among the faculty over the date of its implementation owing to its tussle with the administration. Under the new formula of assessment, after senior residency, a doctor is eligible for promotion to the higher levels as per 3:3:4 years of successive service against the earlier pattern of 4:4:7 years. It means, an AIIMS doctor will become eligible for promotion after first three years of service. He is qualified for next promotions after another three and then four years of service. So, now an AIIMS doctor can become a professor in 10 years against the earlier duration of 15 years. This pattern is followed in other top institutions like IITs and IIMs. However, there is no clarity over the manner in which the new scheme would be applied, as the promotion scheme is being implemented from 2010 instead of 2006 when the faculty interviews stopped. The confusion is created by the fact that those who have completed the required years before 2010 would be eligible for promotion, and this would also impact their pay scales as per the Sixth Pay Commission. But a senior AIIMS administration official involved in the assessment process, said this would be inappropriate, as the doctors asking the scheme to be implemented from 2006 haven't delivered the service required for the promotion. "The new scheme has come as an incentive to the doctors, but confusion over how it would be considered remains. We have written several times, requesting implement the new promotion system as recommended by the Cabinet from 2006 and even the ministry had issued the notification in this regard in January this year after Cabinet's approval," said president of FAIIMS, Manoj Singh. |
2 held for killing sister for honour
Greater Noida, November 20 Babli of Rajbass village and Somveer were allegedly abducted on November 3. Babli's body was found from Ganga Canal in the Kakode area, while that of Somveer's was fished out from the canal in the Aligarh area. Seven persons, including Babli's father Gaj Raj, are accused in the double murder. On Friday, an informer tipped the Kasna police that two of the accused persons would visit Rathore village. The accused were arrested near Rathore village on Friday. They were identified as Jatan and Pritam. Jatan is Babli's brother Babli, while Pritam is her cousin. The accused allegedly wanted to kill Babli's lover Tejveer and not Somveer. But as Tejveer had slipped from the house, they allegedly kidnapped his elder brother Somveer and Babli. Somveer had given shelter to Babli. After allegedly killing Babli, the men thrashed Somveer with a lathi, club and sharp-edged weapons. After killing Somveer, they allegedly dumped both the bodies in Ganga Canal. On November 3, a 10-year-old boy Sonu had escorted Babli when she had escaped from Rajbass village to join her lover Tejveer in Greater Noida. Soon Gaj Raj along with six armed men allegedly descended on Somveer's house. As Tejveer was not there, Gaj Raj allegedly abducted his elder brother Somveer along with his daughter Babli. On November 17, Gaj Raj, his nephew Kanwarpal and uncle Shishupal had surrendered in a Noida court. The trio was sent to jail the same day. The brothers have also been sent to jail. The Kasna police is trying to take the accused persons on remand. |
Delhi police gets 366 new SIs
New Delhi, November 20 Gupta advised the sub-inspectors that they should treat people like the way they want their family members to be treated by the police. "Moreover, special attention should be paid to the distressed people approaching the police. They should be treated with compassion," he added. These sub-inspectors will now undergo training in police stations across the city for the next one year. Gupta expects that these policemen will be helpful in solving the pending cases. Gupta also stressed on the use of technology in policing. "Technology has improved very much and the force should use it for the benefit of people," he said. Among the new recruits are 57 post-graduates besides law graduates and management degree holders. |
MCD, DDA take legal help to
hand over industrial areas
New Delhi, November 20 Yusuf said that once it was handed over to the DSIIDC, the government would concentrate on improving the drainage system and repairing of roads. Whenever it rains, there is waterlogging in industrial areas managed by the MCD. Sewer lines are always chocked. Roads are broken. A total 28 industrial areas are there in the Capital. Of them, the Delhi government manages only four. The remaining ones are maintained by the MCD and the DDA. Industrial areas are the MCD's major source of revenue but the civic body has a complaint that the government is curbing its source of revenue. On this, Yusuf said that no such thing aroused at the meeting. Addressing a conference on Delhi Day today, Yusuf said that under the New Industrial Policy, the government emphasised on the promotion of knowledge-based, eco-friendly service sector, high-tech industries and industries that can achieve the optimum level of production by using less space and power. The New Industrial Policy objectives are to promote non-polluting and clean industries, promote high-technology and skilled industries, develop world-class infrastructure within the planned industrial estates. |
Probe ordered into Metro disruption
New Delhi, November 20 Full-fledged services on the route could be resumed only this morning. A DMRC spokesperson said that managing director E. Sreedharan had appointed a high-level committee headed by executive director (electrical) to probe the embarrassing snag. The committee would fix reasons for the incident and recommend measures to ensure that such incidents are not repeated. The spokesperson said that the pantograph, a device which connects a train to the overhead electrical wires, had clashed with the wires thus, disconnecting power supply and bringing the train to a halt in a tunnel near Udyog Bhawan station. "This led to the damage of the overhead electrification (OHE) wires from which the trains derive power. The damage took place on the neutral section near Udyog Bhawan, an area where power supply switches from one source to another, and affected the pantograph of some more trains which in turn affected the OHE lines further towards Gurgaon," he said. He said that the Metro ran four trains from Central Secretariat to HUDA City Centre after 11 pm yesterday to clear the crowd. As many as 23 DTC buses were also pitched in. "A team of over 200 engineers and technicians of the DMRC worked the entire night till the wee hours today to ensure smooth resumption of services from 6 am," he said. |

The investigation of the case was handed over to the crime branch on Thursday. The commissioner said full investigation would be done and those responsible for the crime would be punished severely. Amritpal Singh (55), the owner of the building, was arrested on Wednesday night from Geeta Colony where he was hiding since the incident. Singh already has 25 criminal cases registered against him and had been declared 'bad character' by the Shakarpur police. |
Fire in 7-storey building
in Delhi
New Delhi, November 20 "It was a seven-floor building. The fire broke out on the sixth floor which is the office of a software company. It appears that shortcircuit may be the reason behind the fire. However, the police will investigate to find out the exact cause behind the incident," said a senior Delhi fire services official. It took around 45 minutes to extinguish the blaze. Officials say that as nobody was in the office at the time of the incident. So, there was no harm to human life, but the office had suffered a loss worth lakhs. |

Undertrial complains of torture
in jail

Car hits truck, none hurt
New Delhi, November 20 The car was brought into control and nobody was injured. The car was occupied by three boys and three girls. |
The new Delhi police commissioner B.K. Gupta wants his men and, of course, women to know that there is a new boss in town. He is making surprise visits to police facilities in civvies, surprising many personnel, most of whom not even knowing what their chief looks like. He was recently at the Tilak Marg police station. The night had set in and most of the officials, including the SHO, were away and many of those present were taking a nap. Looking at the casual attitude of his staff, a furious Gupta remarked that it did not look like a 'thana' at all, but 'barfkhana' (ice factory). The SHO was shunted to Police Lines. But his surprise visits and punitive actions are not really endearing him to his 80,000 strong force. Many say that police station officials are overworked and Gupta should also try to redress their grievances, rather than finding fault with them. A tale of two countries
The acrimony between the governments of India and Pakistan is a fact of life, but the bonhomie among the two nations' people has to be seen to be believed. The Pakistan Pavilion at the India International Trade Fair (IITF) is attracting a lot of people, perhaps more than any other country's. The fruits and handicrafts of the neighbouring country are a big rage among Indians who also seem to love talking to Pakistanis about the life there. Many exchange their addresses and speak in unison about the "dirty politics" that is preventing the two countries from becoming friends. Pakistanis have a gift of the gab and always manage to keep their Indian customers in good humour through the rounds of bargain. And, when the buyers leave with bagful of goodies, they always get an invite to visit Pakistan. No foolproof
security at fair
The organisers' priority to ensure fool-proof security at the trade fair, even at the cost of business, has affected the turn-out. It seems that their claims about top-class security measures have not been executed properly. Hi-fi security gadgets installed at some gates are not functioning. The blame game has already begun with general manager (security) Vikram Sehgal saying that it is the government's responsibility, while officer on special duty V.K. Gaba claiming that 'all is well' with the gadgets and Sehgal is nitpicking. One casualty of the security concerns would be a 'mushaira' which the fair would host in some days. Last year, the organisers had issued 2,000 passes, while this time, only 500 invites have been distributed so far. Last year, two persons were allowed to enter the venue on one card while, the benefit is strictly confined to one person on one card this year. Water threat at
Games Village
The Laxmi Nagar building collapse has highlighted the havoc the recent floods have caused to the foundation of houses in low-lying areas. Local residents say that the watertable has risen so much that there is two to three feet water in the basement of their houses all the time. No matter how much they pump it out, it comes from under the earth. Experts wonder if this is the scene in an area which is at some distance from the Yamuna, the fate of Commonwealth Games Village which is much nearer could only be worse. The water in the basement of the Village was a serious concern during the Games and the officials worked overtime to pump it out. It was then blamed on the heavy rainfall, but now, it appears that most of it might have come from the ground than the sky. Officials say that it could take away some sheen off the Village, which has been billed as a hot property. The flats will be auctioned soon.
