8 of family get life term for double murder
Noida, August 13 "Additional district and sessions judge (fast-track court) Md Ibrahim has awarded life imprisonment to the eight persons. He has also slapped a fine of Rs 20,000 on each of them. Convicts Kishan Kumar, Satinder Kumar, Ashok Kumar and Ajay Veer are brothers, whereas the other four are their mother Veermati, Ajay Veer's wife Bala, Satinder's wife Manju and Kishan's son Anil. They have been convicted under section 302 (murder) and 307 (attempt to murder) of the IPC. All were present in the court at the time of judgement. They have been sent to Dasna jail," said O.P. Yadav, assistant district government counsel. On April 30, 2006, they had assaulted their brother Mahipal and his two daughters Renu and Umesh. Mahipal and Renu had died on the spot as they had suffered bullet injuries. Umesh was critically injured and was hospitalised for months. Mahipal's brother-in-law Sishpal was on the roof when the convicts killed him. They had tried to kill him too, but he ran downstairs and reached the Jehangirpur police station and lodged the FIR. The deceased was the step brother of the convicted brothers. After the death of his wife, Mahipal wanted to sell his share of land and move to some other place. The murder was committed to grab his share of land. The convicted persons had planned to convert his murder into deaths during robbery. Had Sishpal not witnessed the murder, they could have been successful in their plan, the police had said. |
BJP files complaint against CWG scam
New Delhi, August 13 The BJP demanded that an FIR under Prevention of Corruption Act and relevant sections of IPC be registered against them. The complaint said that crores of rupees released by the government for preparation of the Games were being "looted" by those at the helm of affairs. "Money is being openly diverted from different heads. Various articles are being purchased or taken on rent at exorbitant rates," the complaint said. It said that tenders are being given to family and friends. Contract for relaying the surface at the CWG tennis venue was bagged by international firm Rebound Ace whose representative in India is Aditya Khanna, son of All India Tennis Association secretary Anil Khanna and treasurer of Organizing Committee. The expert tennis players have openly said that this surface is not suitable for Indian climate as it puts extra load on the legs. The complaint further said that lawn bowling tracks to be used during the Games have been built at Rs 1.36 crore when they could have been ready at Rs 27 lakh. The companies responsible for the supply of overlay items and are taken on rent have overrated the prices manifold. As the acts are cognizable offences, the police should register an FIR and investigate. |
Trial court adjourns hearing in Sajjan case
New Delhi, August 13 The trial court was to record the statement of witness Jagdish Kaur for the 17th day today. But the proceedings in the case were withheld after the counsel for Sajjan Kumar, a prime accused in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case, informed the court of the development. The trial court was to record witness' statement at 2 pm today at the Kakardooma court complex. Earlier, Kaur, who had lost her husband serving in the army, her son and three brothers in the riots, had pleaded the court to finish the recording of evidence fast as she has been staying in Delhi for the past one and a half months, leaving her family back in Amritsar. "I requested the court to finish the cross quickly as it has been a long time know and I want to go back home. The court twice asked the defence lawyer to finish the cross," Kaur had said. The apex court's judgment came as a shock to Kaur. "I was getting ready to appear in the court when my brother switched on the television. He flipped channels when he came across the news. I don't know how long our wait for justice will drag on," she said. "It is very sad. I am very unhappy obviously as after 26 long years, I started hoping for justice but the apex court's decision broke me. I respect the court's decision but hope that the accused should be punished as early as possible," she said. Adding that she will be leaving for Amritsar tomorrow as no proceedings in the trial court can take place till August 27, the next date of case hearing in the Supreme Court. Meanwhile, the trial court has directed Sajjan's counsel to submit the copy of SC's order by August 23. Reacting to the Supreme Court's decision, counsel for the victims, H S Phoolka said, "I had pleaded the same court to at least allow the statement recording of witness as the cross has been continuing for 16 hearings…but the court didn't agree. This is likely to severely prejudice the case of the prosecution." |
Woman, her father beaten by husband
New Delhi, August 13 The incident was reported from Mayo International School in the Patpargunj area of east Delhi this afternoon. Asha Rawat and her father M.S. Rawat were assaulted by Asha's estranged husband Bharat and his sister Sita outside their son's school. Asha has been living with her son at her parents' house after she filed for divorce in 2003. She said incompatibility in marriage forced her to seek divorce. "Bharat and his sister slapped me and my 75-year-old father repeatedly. He did not relent even as my father fell on the ground and kept kicking him. Since then he is unable to hear properly. It was only after the police reached the spot and school guards came to our rescue that we were spared. Despite this, the police has not registered a case," alleged Asha, adding that Bharat had been threatening her with dire consequences. "A few days ago, Bharat and his sister went to my nine-year-old son's school and told the school authorities that they were his parents, after which the school authorities allowed them to meet him. They tried to make my son against me. However, he came home and narrated everything to me, after which I cautioned the school. Today again, they reached his school. When my father and I tried to reason out with them so that the child was not involved, he got angry and started beating us," said Asha, alleging that not only the police failed to register a case but it did not give her any assurance that Bharat would not assault her family again. "When I asked the SHO if he could give me in writing that Bharat would not assault us again, he declined," she said. Attempts to contact Madhu Vihar police station SHO M.K. Meena failed as he chose not to take the calls. However, ACP Madhu Vihar Jagdish Kumar Malik has assured to look into the matter. "I do not have the complete information about the matter, but I will check with the SHO. However, I assure you that no injustice will be done to the woman and the accused will be firmly dealt with," said Malik. |
Delhi hub of recycling e-waste
New Delhi, August 13 While motherboards are recycled in Mandoli, plastic recycling is also done in Seelampur, Trilokpuri, Mayapuri and Shastri Park. Several units are mushrooming in peripheral places like Meerut, Ghaziabad, Faridabad and Muradabad. "The primary reason for the growing of unorganised sector in e-waste recycling is upstream connections, with major part of the waste coming from cities like Mumbai, Kolkata among others," said director of Toxic Links, Ravi Agrawal. While the trend has led to employing many socially challenged groups in the e-waste recycling business, exposing them to various health hazards due to crude and rudimentary methods, it has also resulted in the loss of rich resources and caused environmental pollution. "Due to unscientific procedures in the unorganised sector, precious metals like silver, gallium, platinum and palladium are lost in recycling and recovery of gold and copper is far lower than their presence," said e-waste project manager Priti Mahesh. The findings are a part of e-waste project, which is yet to be released by NGO Toxic Links that has sent a set of recommendations to the Union ministry of environment and forests, raising several concerns, including on how the country is becoming an easy dumping ground of e-waste. Besides, the omission of the unorganised sector in the new draft under Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 would trigger a parallel illegal network in the e-waste business, said Agarwal. "Even as the informal sector remains a dominant driver in the e-waste business, there is no provision in the new draft for involving them. This could encourage the hidden business to run in cities like Delhi. There is a need of a smooth system rather than a parallel system," he stressed. As the prevailing practices of dismantling and recycling e-waste in the informal sector are crude with minimal environmental and health safeguard mechanisms, engaging the section in collection and dismantling stage could be a solution, he suggested. According to many environmentalists, the e-waste draft, currently in public domain for comments, lacks teeth with no clamps on import of e-waste. "The country should recycle and reuse four lakh tonnes of annual waste before it imports further. In view of environment protection, recycling and reusing cannot be an objective rather it should be a mechanism. The law needs to be improved. It has to be in sync with the global norms of extended producer responsibility and restriction on the use of certain hazardous substances. We have sent our suggestions to the nodal ministry last month," Agarwal told The Tribune. Importantly, India, generating a total of 4.5 lakh tonnes of e-waste annually, is yet to have a potential law on restricting the handling and recycling of e-waste. "Huge amount of e-waste comes mislabelled from the US and European countries via illegal routes of the Middle East countries to cities like Delhi, which also receives a good chunk from Pune, Chennai and Calcutta," Priti pointed out. Going by the fact that in the country, an estimated 95 per cent of the recycling of plastic, electronic and electrical waste happens in the unrecognised sector alone, India is projected to become the outsourcing hub for e-waste recycling. |
City gets 2 e-toilets
New Delhi, August 13 These toilets which are aesthetically more appealing will save water, energy and space, said MCD officials. Inaugurating the toilet complex, Mayor Prithviraj Sawhney said the bio-toilet introduced at Nigambodh Ghat parking area is based on technology developed and approved by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), ministry of defence. "In bio-toilets, the faecal matter and sludge is decomposed in the pit using a bacteria developed by the DRDO. The bacteria convert the waste matter into methane and water," he said. Both the technologies are supported by the concerned Central government ministries. He said the toilet is maintenance-free and requires minimum water. "The toilets have been developed as per the DRDO technology and will be useful for women, especially. This technology has been transferred to some companies which will manufacture the toilets as per the specification laid down the organisation. Both the units have been put on experimental basis and installed free of cost by the concerned agencies," he said. The new toilets will have features like degradation of human waste to water and harmless methane gas, low production of waste biological sludge in comparison to aerobic degradation, minimal odor, no energy requirements for aeration, 100 per cent solid discharge-free technology, no maintenance for many years and cost-effectiveness. The toilets are supported by the ministry of science and technology and developed by a Trivendaram-based electronic devise company. The toilet has been installed near Kudesia Park near ISBT Kashmere Gate. Electronic toilets will flush the excreta automatically, if the user has not flushed, thereby keeping it clean. It would have automatic doors that will be opened on inserting the coins. "If a person is there in the unit for more than a particular period, system will alert the status to the control room. It requires just 35 sq feet to set up the unit. The total inside area is 15 sq feet and height is 10 feet. It has a water tank capacity of 650 litres," said
Sawhney. |

MCG to tighten noose on errant cattle owners

Also, a suspected death due to dengue infection has been there in a hospital, but the confirmation report is yet to reach," said Dr N K Yadav, MCD chief medical officer. Doctors have cautioned against neglecting the disease and said it is better to seek medication in the earlier stage rather than delaying when the status worsens. "In case of symptoms like fever, bodyache, rashes over the body, one should see a doctor.
