Residents panic as bull kills man
Greater Noida, August 7 The incident has created panic among residents. They feel unsafe to move around as hordes of bulls roam around on the streets. "I was going towards the colony this morning when a bull came running towards me. I ran into a nearby house and saved myself. But an elderly man who was a few meters away from me could not move to any safe place. The animal hit him on the back. He fell down. The bull then pierced its horns into his stomach. The animal continued attacking him till he became unconscious," said Jagdish Sharma, an eyewitness and resident of Gautam Puri Colony. "The deceased was identified as Asif Ali. He was going to the fields when the incident took place. After hitting the elderly man, the bull attacked a motorcyclist who threw his bike and ran to a safe place," said Rahul Kumar, deputy superintendent of police. Residents are agitated over the rising cases of bull attacks. "The Dadri municipality and the police are unable to control the stray bull menace in the area. In last six months, over a dozen persons have been injured by bulls," said Anand Arya, a social worker. |
Rising cases of eve-teasing in
Gt Noida
Greater Noida, August 7 “The victim is the daughter of a UP cabinet minister and the first year medical college student at Sharda Hospital. She has lodged an FIR against five youths. She claimed they were in Maruti car. The car driver was arrested last night,” said Shailendra Lal, deputy superintendent of police. “Eve teasing cases have increased in the Knowledge Park area in the recent past. We have requested the police to increase patrolling near colleges and set up a police chowki,” said D.K.Garg, chairman, Ishan Institute of Management & Techology, who is president of Greater Noida Engineering and Management Colleges Association. “When VVIPs are not safe in the city, one can understand the plight of a common woman. At residential sectors too, women are feeling insecure. Greater Noida city has become unsafe for women,” said Rupa Gupta, president, Mahila Shakti Sammajik Sammittee. “Patrolling has been intensified near malls and colleges. Police chowki has been approved by the state government and it will be set up soon,” said Lal. |
Kite: A fly in the ointment
Independence Day is round the corner and youngsters in the city are all set with their kites. But they ought to be careful. Markets are full of a new type of thread (manjha) with metallic and glass-dust coatings. This kind of thread is not only strong but also a good conductor of electricity. It is dangerous for the kite fliers if the thread comes in contact with the overhead naked wires. It can even kill the kite fliers once the thread touches the wire, said an electricity engineer. Keeping this in view, the police has warned the kite enthusiasts and even ordered criminal proceedings against those who are seen selling such threads. Info travels
The Commonwealth Games projects have exposed the Delhi government as well as the Organising Committee (OC), both grappling with charges of corruption. A majority of the projects of the Delhi government are running behind schedule. Treasurer of the OC had to resign under pressure of the media. All this has happened even when journalists were denied any source of information. Delhi Secretariat was declared out of bounds for the journos following the Chief Minister's directive that nobody should give any statement to the media regarding the Games. After all, you can't fool the fourth estate. Delayed projects: Artful explanation
With just 55 days left for the mega sporting event in Delhi, the authorities concerned have started delinking various infrastructural projects from the Games as they have finally come to realise that the projects cannot be completed before the event. Earlier, every project was launched in the name of the Games so that maximum funding could be gathered in the coffers of the politicians and officials, now the authorities say these projects have nothing to do with the Games. Be it NDMC's ongoing construction of the subways, CP renovation, multi-level parking or MCD automated parking projects, the officials are out to clarify that 'the work has nothing to do with the Games and thus will be finished after the event'. But then, that's the only choice left for the bureaucrats to explain the delayed projects and missed deadlines. Officials on
their toes
Amidst all the controversies threatening to mire the much-awaited Commonwealth Games, one silver lining seems to be visible in the otherwise lackadaisical attitude of the 'babus' seated in government offices. The national Capital is bustling with infrastructural acivities and the government 'babus' have strangely turned out to be agile than ever. The probable reason could be the handsome bonus that has been on offer, courtesy Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit or the fear of reprimand in the event of failure of missing the deadline of August 31 for completing all CWG-related projects. Low-cost screening for vascular ailments
New Delhi, August 7 The programme targets smokers and those above 50 years as they constitute more than one-third of the people suffering from diabetes, gangrene, hypertension and heart diseases. According to the World Health Organisation, India will be the diabetes capital of the world by 2011. "This innovative screening will help our patients know and prevent many complications, thereby avoiding surgery or interventions before the disease is in the end-stage," said Ramesh Tripathi, senior consultant, vascular and endovascular surgery. |
OC to recruit students to work as drivers
New Delhi, August 7 The OC, which is apparently running short of drivers to ferry CWG athletes and delegates during the 14-day event, will recruit students with technical background to work as drivers. They would be given a special certificate for working during the Games and paid good remunerations. Though Tata Motors, which will supply 2,000 cars during the Games, has been entrusted with the job of providing drivers, the OC has also decided to recruit the same. It plans to recruit around 30 per cent of the total number of drivers required for the 3,000-strong fleet with the rest being given by the Tata Motors. The officials said that the recruitment of the volunteer drivers would be based on good academic record, engineering background and most importantly fluency in spoken English. "They would be given special training and would work in shifts during the event," said an OC official. The volunteer drivers would also be given training on the Intelligent Transport System. Apart from recruiting drivers, the OC will use the general volunteers as drivers. The volunteers will work in the OC office and at Games venues, but when required, will ferry people in vehicles. They will ferry the CWG family members, including the VVIPs, very senior bureaucrats, officers, and ministers, mostly from member countries, athletes and coaches. |
Cops in white to man CWG stadiums
New Delhi, August 7 According to information, the Delhi police would plant hundreds of its men dressed in white, instead of the usual khakhi, to spring surprise on the rowdy elements threatening security or peaceful conduct of the Games. The motive is twofold: while it would dilute the concentration of police officials in khakhi inside the stadiums, the plain-clothes policemen dressed in white would make it easier for the senior police officials to recognize their men and pass on orders. According to an official from the provision and logistics (P&L) wing of Delhi police, it has invited a tender on the supply of 667 white trousers and shirts for its men. "We are procuring 667 white trousers and shirts for some of our men who would be keeping an eye on the sensitive areas comprising the VIP enclosures and players' dressing rooms in the various stadiums. A tender in this regard was issued a few days ago and the selected firm would have to supply the clothes within ten days of order," confirmed a police official. According to the officer, having the cops in plain clothes is the strategy employed by the police forces in the west, including the UK and the USA. "Having stadiums full of men in khakhi and around players would not make a good picture. So having some of our men in a particular civilian dress would not only make it difficult for the miscreants to identify them but also make it easier for the senior officials to identify their men and keep an eye on their movement," said the official. ACP Rajan Bhagat, spokesperson, Delhi police, said that these men in white would be employed for the specific duties in and around the stadiums. "As to how many men would be wearing whites is not clear, but yes, we would have some of our men in whites during the Games. They would be used for specific duties depending upon the situation in and outside the stadiums," said Bhagat. |

Three dead in accidents
Noida, August 7 A speeding dumper truck hit a motorcyclist near Okhla barrage. One person died on the spot. He has been identified as Santosh Singh, a BPO employee. In another accident, Babu Ram, a carpenter, was killed by an unknown vehicle near Gijhode Crossing last night. While in the third incident, Bhim Singh, a labourer, was killed after he was hit by an unknown vehicle on Bhangel road last night. He was crossing the road when the incident took place. Car rams into police chowki
A drunk man allegedly rammed his Swift car into the Nithari police chowki last night. The car was badly damaged, but no injury has been reported. Haroon Khan, a food company manager and resident of Ghaziabad, was returning home in the car after attending a late night party from Delhi when the accident took place. When he reached Nithari, he lost control over the vehicle and rammed it into the Nithari police chowki. Motor cycles parked at the chowki were damaged by the collision. "Khan has been arrested. He was drunk," said Arun Kumar Singh, sector 20 police station SHO, Noida. |
Woman killed
New Delhi, August 7 The police suspects personal enmity to be the reason behind the murder. The police said the incident took place around 1:30 am. The victim has been identified as Shravani Devi. The victim along with her daughter-in-law Poonam (28) and grandson Shubham (6) was sleeping when the incident took place. The armed attackers barged into the room when Poonam opened the door after hearing a knock on the door. "The attackers held Poonam hostage at knifepoint, gagged her and attacked Shravani on the forehead with a knife," a senior police official said. Poonam raised the alarm after the attackers escaped. Since the assailants did not try to rob any valuables, the police has ruled out robbery as the motive. A case has been registered while further investigation is on. |
Car of MP’s son robbed
New Delhi, August 7 According to the police, Mishra's son Vinay had gone to Dwarka sports complex in his Ford Endeavour SUV car for jogging. "When Vinay returned around 9 pm, he found his car with a flat tyre. He called his domestic help Hari Mohan to take the car to a mechanic and went to his residence in another car. But when Hari Mohan started the car, some unidentified assailants held him hostage and sped past with the vehicle. They dumped him near Jharauda Kalan and fled with the car," said a police official. According to the police, when Vinay reached home around 10:30 pm, Hari Mohan had not returned with the car. Even his phone was not reachable. Around 11:30 pm, Hari Mohan called up Vinay and narrated how some persons had allegedly gagged him and robbed the car. Vinay immediately informed the Najafgarh police station about the incident.
