DAV official denies manipulation
:Reacting to a news item published in these columns today regarding irregularities in PhD enrolments, Regional Director of DAVIET C.L. Kochher denied any manipulation at his end. “The enrolments of my daughters are absolutely in order. Punjab Technical University has properly processed and assessed their applications before granting them enrolments for PhD,” he claimed in a statement here today.

PO arrested
: The Sidhwan police has nabbed a proclaimed offender who had absconded during trial of an FIR registered against him under Sections 379 and 411 of the IPC three years ago. Desa Singh, a resident of Dhangari village under the Bilga police station, was nabbed while he was trying to leave the area on Friday. He was booked in a theft case three years ago and declared proclaimed offender during the trial.

: Gujranwala Guru Nanak Khalsa College of Pharmacy on Saturday organised a lecture on “Reproductive health and personal hygiene in adolescence” to celebrate the teenage day.

Seminar on drug abuse
: The Sankalp Welfare and Awareness Society (SWAS) organised a seminar against drug abuse at the Chhokeran campus of Doaba Group of Colleges. SSP Narinder Bhargav exhorted the NGOs, educationists, intellectuals and students to come forward to launch concerted efforts against drug abuse. 

Lok adalat: Lok adalat was organised at District Courts as per the directions of the State Legal Services Authority here on Saturday. As many as 146 cases were decided during the lok adalat.

2 vehicle thieves arrested
: The police busted an inter-district gang of vehicle thieves and arrested its two members, identified as Sumesh Kumar and Deepak Bassi of Ludhiana, from near sugar mill chowk here today. The police recovered two motorcycles and two scooters from them. Kapurthala SSP Ram Singh said the arrested gang members had confessed to their crimes. 

Freedom fighter bereaved: Shakuntala Devi (85), wife of Old Freedom Fighter and Punjab Freedom Fighters Association  president Kali Charan Sood, died after brief illness here today. Several prominent citizens, including  former minister Joginder Singh Maan, attended  the cremation.

Programme to felicitate toppers: Students of the Akhil Bhartiya Vidhyarthi Parishad (ABVP) held a press conference at the Student’s Centre, Panjab University, to announce the felicitation programme of toppers here on Saturday. The student organisation is set to honour the first and second rank holders of all departments. Besides, those who have excelled in sports will also be honoured. The event is scheduled for Wednesday and Member of Parliament Navjot Sidhu will be the chief guest.

3 killed in mishap
: Three members of a family were killed while two others injured when the car they were travelling in reportedly collided with a vehicle carrying hens here on Saturday. Dozens of hens were also killed in the accident as the Tata-407 overturned following collision.

Youth murdered
: A youth identified as Aasif was allegedly stabbed to death by his neighbour, his wife and another accomplice here on Saturday. A case has been registered against three persons - Parmod, his wife Rekha and Deepak. The incident took place when Aasif allegedly passed indecent remarks against Rekha.

Rs 67 lakh for green cover
:Presiding over the 61st Van Mahotsav function at Kupper village, near here, yesterday, local MLA Rakesh Pathania said 5.61 lakh saplings in 655 hectares were being planted in the current rainy season in Nurpur forest division.He said over Rs 67 lakh would be spent under various scheme under the plantation drive.

Pilgrims stopped at Yatri Niwas
:A batch of around 1,000 Amarnath pilgrims have been stopped at the Yatri Niwas from proceeding on the yatra due to bad weather conditions in the Valley.While taking to The Tribune, MK Koul, in charge of the Yatri Niwas, said an announcement was made in the morning stopping the yatris from proceeding on the yatra. He said there was a possibility that the yatra might resume tomorrow.
