COMMONWEALTH GAMES
BSES to ensure no blackouts in stadia
Himani Chandel
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, August 6
The power distribution companies are making all efforts to ensure no blackout during the Commonwealth Games (CWG), especially during the opening and closing ceremonies.

In order to strengthen and augment the power distribution network in the various games (CWG) venues, projects worth Rs 74 crore have been executed by the power distribution companies in Delhi. Alternate power back-up lines and connections are being set up at every stadium to avoid any embarrassment of power cuts during the show.

The power distribution system in Jawaharlal Nehru stadium (JNL), the host of opening and closing ceremonies, has been strengthened at a cost of Rs 5.2 crore. A load capacity of 28 MVA has been created in the stadium which is more than the double of what is required.

The Rs 74-crore project will include the set-up of power distribution network in 12 CWG venues, including the Commonwealth Games Village, the International Media Centre, seven competition venues and three training venues. The stadium infrastructure has been created, keeping future scalability in mind and 100 per cent redundancy.

"The load capacity that we have created in the games venues is far more than

what was recommended to us. JLN was asked for a capacity of 12 MVA but we have given 28 MVA. Similarly, in other stadiums capacity has intentionally increased by the company foreseeing the future requirements," said a senior BSES official.

In Siri Fort Sports complex, Karni Singh Shooting Range, Saket Sports Complex, RK Khanna and Yamuna Sports Complex, a load capacity of 5 MVA has been created while the suggested load was 4.3, 2.5, 589 KVA, 1.6 and 4.2 MVA, respectively. In stadiums like Thyagraj Sports Complex and International Media Centre, the power capacity is 14 MVA in place of the recommended 1.6 and seven MVA.Indira Gandhi International Stadium is the only stadium which has the approved load capacity of 11.8 MVA.

The work is being executed by the BSES which will do the job of creating and strengthening the power infrastructure at the games venues by installing new panels, feeders and cables. BSES Yamuna Private Limited (BYPL) has set up a separate state-of-the-art 66/11 KV grid sub-station for the Commonwealth Games Village.

BYPL and BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL) are working in association with agencies like Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and Central Public Works Department (CPWD) to execute the project.

According to information, the incident took place around 7.30 pm in Sarojini Nagar Market where a team of the Enforcement department led by an inspector and the local police had gone to remove unauthorized encroachments in the market.

The shopkeepers and a few members of the market association alleged that the victim died in police custody and hundreds of them shouted slogans against the police after the death of the hawker.

According to information, Om Prakash Arya, a resident of house number 281, Pocket-B in Rohini's Sector-7, had been running his readymade garment and hosiery business at his allotted tehbazari site in Sarojini Nagar market for the past 20 years. Yesterday evening, a team of the Enforcement department led by inspector Kamal and the local police reached the market to remove unauthorized encroachments.

Recalling the incident, Sandeep Yadav, one of Arya's employees, said, "They came to our shop and started seizing our property, saying we had expanded our shop on the unauthorised land of NDMC. My employer requested them not to seize the property. But they continued doing their job and Kamal, the NDMC inspector, misbehaved with my master and used abusive language. My master protested and then the local police dragged him in their vehicle and took him to the police station," said Yadav, adding that later he heard Arya had died at the police station.

However, according to Ashok Randhawa, the president of Sarojini Nagar Mini Market Association, Arya complained about his poor health and requested the police to take him to hospital. However, he was not taken to hospital until he started vomiting and collapsed.

"I have learnt from my sources in the police station that Arya was taken to hospital in an autorickshaw by a cop who dropped him at the emergency ward and left. Later, the doctors told Arya's brother Guddu that Arya had a cardiac attack and died around 4 am in the hospital," said Randhawa.

Plea to save Yamuna bed
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, August 6
The citizens of Delhi should come forward to protect the environment and underground water and protest against the construction of any building on the Yamuna riverbed, said senior journalist Kuldip Nayar while releasing a book, "It's Common V/S Wealth", which exposes the scam in the Commonwealth Games 2010.

The book was authored by Kapil Mishra, co-founder of Youth for Justice, an NGO.

Nayyar said the Yamuna riverbed is the only source of potable water in Delhi. If it is destroyed, citizens will face water crisis. So we opposed the construction of Commonwealth Games Village.

Former Union minister Vijay Goel, who was also one of the speakers, said instead of pressurizing the government to investigate corruption in the Games, we all should try to make the event successful. Nothing will come out from the enquiry.

He said the selection of Suresh Kalmadi for chairman of the Organizing Committee was not the right choice.

Vikram Soni, a scientist who has done research on pollution in the Yamuna, said that though the government has removed jhuggi clusters around the CWG sites and other areas, the people who have come from other states to work as labourers in the Games projects would not go back even when the sporting event is over. The same had happened during the Asian Games in 1982.

Instead of Delhi, the government should have planned to hold the mega event in other states where development was required, the scientist added.
