India in Sri Lanka
Too many twists in the tale

 Colombo, August 6
Jolted by three quick wickets, India were left with the tricky task of scoring 204 runs for victory on a fifth day track after allowing Sri Lanka to stage a remarkable recovery in the third and final Test which seemed headed for a nail-biting finish today. Chasing 256 for a win, the Indians were tottering at 53 for three at close on a thrilling fourth day's play which saw the hosts rely on Thilan Samaraweera (83) and tailender Ajantha Mendis (78) to salvage the situation after being at a precarious 125 for eight at one stage.

The Sri Lankans recovered brilliantly from the dramatic middle order collapse to score 267 in the second innings and had snapped the key wickets of Virender Sehwag (0), Rahul Dravid (7) and Murali Vijay (27) to raise hopes of a 2-0 series win. Veteran Sachin Tendulkar (11) and night watchman Ishant Sharma (2) were at the crease at stumps on an absorbing day's play which saw fortune fluctuating from one team to the other.

The Sri Lankans owed their total to Samareweera and Mendis who put up a resolute 118-run ninth wicket partnership to save the blushes for the team. The partnership frustrated the Indians, who had put themselves in command in the morning session with five wickets for just 24 runs, and made their victory target a lot stiffer.

With just one day left, the Indians will have to bat out of their skin on a deteriorating P Sara Oval track tomorrow to entertain hopes of a series-equalling victory. Much will depend on Tendulkar who has to play the sheet anchor's role while the other batsmen play around him. Off spinner Suraj Randiv, who opened the bowling attack, scalped all the three wickets to give his team the upperhand. Resuming at 45 for two, the hosts lost their first wicket early in the day when Suraj Randiv, who was lucky to be dropped by wicket keeper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, was finally dismissed the next ball being trapped lbw by Ojha. — PTI

IHF makes a comeback
M.S.Unnikrishnan
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, August 6
The decision of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports to de-recognise Hockey has given validation to the KPS Gill-led Indian Hockey Federation whose ban by the Ministry and the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) had been upturned by the Delhi High Court recently. The IHF had expressed its desire to merge with the Indian Women's Hockey Federation (IWHF) to form a unified body to get the recognition of the FIH.

The Ministry also conveyed its decision in a letter to International Hockey Federation (FIH) president Leandro Negre today, and requested him to allow the IOA or the Sports Authority of India (SAI) to field the Indian team for participation in various FIH-recognised tournaments. “This would be necessary in the interest of Indian hockey”, the Ministry added.

The Ministry informed Negre that in view of the Ministry’s decision to derecognise HI, which, incidentally put a properly elected body yesterday as demanded by the FIH, “The HI is no more the recognised National Sports Federation (NSF) for the management, control and promotion of hockey in the country, and is also not authorised to select and field the national team in international competitions."

“In view of these developments, the Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) stands recognised by the Government as the sole NSF for hockey in India, in the light of the judgement dated 21-5-2010 of the High Court of Delhi, which has also been accepted by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) as well as the HI before the High Court”, the Ministry further explained.

It said once the IHF became fully compliant with the constitution of the FIH, they will approach the international body for recognition/affiliation/membership. “The IHF is a long-standing body, which was steup in 1928, and the IWHF too was setup in 1951. Hence, post-merger, there should not be any doubt about their capacity to take care of the promotion and development of hockey in India”, the Ministry told the FIH.

The Ministry requested the FIH “not to assign any international tournament or have any commercial dealings with the HI under the impression that they are the NSF for hockey in India because they no longer enjoy the government recognition, and have assumed the character of a private body”, the Ministry letter clarified.

The Ministry’s decision came following the HI decision not to adhere to the Ministry’s guidelines, as the very election of 83-year-old Vidya Stokes as the president of the HI yesterday, was in clear violation of the age cap of 70 put by the Ministry for an office-bearer to superannuate.

The HI, however, argues that the conditions that prevailed at the time of grant of recognition to HI continues to exist, and the HI had the recognition of the IOA and the FIH "and therefore HI alone can represent the country in international competitions". "The Government recognition is no more than a ministerial act for the purpose of extending financial assistance, which HI is not seeking any more", the HI replied to the Government.

It is no secret that the newly-elected HI has the sanction of the IOA and the FIH, and unless the international body decides to sidestep HI, it will continue to call the shots in Indian hockey. But with a few hiccups. Will a hockey team, selected without the approval of the Government, be elegible to play under banner of the Indian flag? Or will it be a mere private team, selected by a private body? The players may also be not eligible for the cash awards of the Government if a team without the Ministry's approval compete in an international event and win a medal.

The Government-HI tussle will have an immediate impact on India's participation in the upcoming Women’s World Cup, the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games, and the players would be the worst sufferers.

Santosh Trophy
Punjab, Bengal to meet in final

Hosts Bengal and Punjab today registered contrasting wins over their respective opponents to set up a summit clash in 64th National Football Championship for Santosh Trophy at floodlit Yuba Bharati Krirangan here. While Bengal, champions for 29 times, exorcised the ghosts of the past pulling off a 5-4 (1-1) victory over their last year's nemesis Goa via penalty shootout. In contrast, eight-time champions Punjab dominated right from the start to register a comfortable 3-1 win over a listless Tamil Nadu.

In the first semifinal of the day, holders Goa began their title defence positively taking a 20th minute lead through Milagres Gonsalves but Bengal equalised through Robin Singh's in the 83rd minute. In the penalty shootout, Bengal bounced back from 0-2 down and went on to clinch 4-3 with goals by captain Snehashish Chakraborty, Souvik Chowdhury, Sheikh Azim and Denson Devadas who scored the winner by taking the fifth penalty.

In the second semifinal, Balwant Singh struck twice (16th and 56th) while Maninder Singh scored once in the 35th to oust Tamil Nadu who scored a consolation goal through substitute M Elamurugan in 90+3rd minute. Tamil Nadu were jolted in the 16th minute when Balwant Singh's clinical header from Amandeep Singh's cross gave Punjab the lead.

Maninder Singh took advantage of a TN defensive lapse in the 35th minute and struck with a powerful rightfooter. After the break, Balwant received a Parveen Kumar cross and found the back of TN net for his second goal. Tamil Nadu earned a late goal in the injury time when Elamurugan scored from a rebound to reduce the margin. — PTI

Sandeep lauds Brasa’s work
Former Indian hockey skipper Sandeep Singh has bagged the Arjuna Award even before the Haryana’s state award
Akash Ghai/ TNS

Chandigarh, August 6
For former Indian hockey skipper Sandeep Singh, figuring in the list of Arjuna awardees is a big morale booster just ahead of top class sporting events - Commonwealth Games and Asian Games - this year.

“It is a pleasant surprise for me and my family,” said elated Sandeep. He has bagged the national award even before the Haryana’s state award - Bhim Award.

“However, now I am Arjuna awardee and the feeling just inspire me to live up to the latest honour,” said the top drag flicker of the country.

Sandeep, who recently put up a commendable show during European tour with scoring 16 goals in 11 matches, said the good show was result of his hard training, especially on short corners at Pune during his ‘forced lay off’.

He also appreciated the squad members, who, according to him, have started playing the game in total European style. “Yes, we have adopted the European style in Toto, thanks to the hard efforts of Indian coach Jose Brasa,” said Sandeep.

On the recent developments pertaining to the Hockey India elections and further its derecognition by the government, Sandeep was of the view that such things affect the image of the game. “As far as we (the players) are concerned, we hardly think on such issues as our prime focus is on our performance and to play for the country. But in my viewpoint all such issues should be solved as soon as possible for the betterment of our national game,” he said.
