DERA BASSI
Man falls to death:
One person was killed after he fell from the roof of his house. Victim Balkar Singh, a resident of Dharmgarh village, was admitted to the Civil Hospital, Dera Bassi, where he succumbed to his injuries. The body of the deceased was handed over to his relatives after conducting the postmortem. The police has started an inquest proceeding.

Agricultural camp: The agriculture department, Mohali, organised a camp at Lalru on Friday and informed the farmers regarding new agriculture techniques to increase the production from crops. District chief agriculture officer Harmanjit Singh Sandhu stressed upon the direct paddy sowing to save the decreasing water level. Block horticulture development officer Amanpreet Kaur informed the farmers about subsidies on horticulture under the National Horticulture Mission. She stressed upon horticulture for getting more income from limited lands.

Saplings planted: A tree plantation drive was launched at Longowal College here. The drive was inaugurated by Dera Bassi SDM Puneet Goyal. Kanta Katyal, chairperson, Kapil Katyal, vice-chairman, Vinod Katyal, secretary of the school, planted saplings. A similar drive was carried out in the market committee, Dera Bassi.

Students shine at taekwondo championship:
The students of the Delhi International School, Faridkot, bagged seven medals including, one gold, one silver and five bronze medals in the IX Punjab State Sub-Junior Boys/Girls Taekwondo Championship 2010, which was held at Taran-Taran (Amritsar). Chairperson Saroj Tola and principal Navneet Thakur congratulated the students on their splendid performance and exhorted them to keep it up .

Shabana Bano murder: Cops trying to ‘hush up’ case:
The family members of Shabana Bano, who was allegedly killed by her in-laws for dowry in Hoshiarpur, have alleged that the police was trying to hush up the case as none of the accused in the case had been nabbed yet. Talking to mediapersons, the deceased’s brother Arif Jamal, a resident of Varanasi, alleged that married to Mansoor Alam, a resident of Kashmiri Bazar in Hoshiarpur in 2009, Shabana was killed by her husband, his father Nasir Ahamadh, mother Ruksana Begum, brother Sanju and sisters-in-law Sehnaz and Kulsum. Medical reports even confirmed multiple injury marks on her body, he said. The family members demanded that the accused be put behind bars and sections 406, 498-A and 120-B be added to the existing sections in the FIR.

Woman sets herself ablaze, dies: A wife of a guard with the Railways committed suicide by setting herself ablaze at their government accommodation in Railway Colony late last night. Shiv Kumari, wife of Bhole Nath, took the extreme step at about 2 am when her husband was on night duty and other members of the family were asleep. Ram Sharan, her brother-in-law, in a statement to the police, said his brother had recently shifted to the colony and Shiv Kumari was not liking the area. Ram Sharan claimed that he heard shrikes in the midnight and rushed to the room where she was asleep. “I found her on fire and tried to save her by putting a blanket on her but to no avail,” he said. The Baradari police station has initiated inquest proceeding in this regard. The body was handed over to the family after post-mortem examination.

Undertrial dies in Civil Hospital: Lodged in Central Jail, Jalandhar, an undertrial prisoner, who was admitted to the local Civil Hospital last night, died this morning. Hailing from Leela village in Muzaffarpur, Dalip Rai was lodged in the jail on August 4 for his alleged involvement in a liquor smuggling case. Talking to The Tribune, Jail Superintendent Surinder Saini revealed that Dalip was under observation in jail hospital after he reported some respiratory problem on Wednesday evening. As his condition deteriorated, Dalip was referred to the local Civil Hospital where he died. Saini said that Dalip, a rickshaw-puller, was a alcoholic and had been suffering from a respiratory problem since long. The body was handed over to his brother after a post-mortem examination this evening. The Division 2 police station has started investigations in this regard.

: Punjab Chief Secretary SC Agarwal on Friday visited three villages of Khamano sub-division, including Thikriwal, Bhamian and Ramgarh to take a stock of the Narega Scheme. He spoke to residents to know about their problems and assured them that their demands would be considered at the earliest.

Central Institute of Post Harvest Engineering and Technology (CIPHET) licensed the technology of green chilli powder and puree to a Maharashtra-based entrepreneur for commercial scale production.

Kaler is ADC (General): Additional Commissioner, Excise and Taxation, Punjab, SR Kaler was on Friday transferred as Additional Deputy Commissioner (General), Ludhiana. He replaces Kuldeep Singh, who has been transferred to the Municipal Corporation as Additional Commissioner. Kaler would join on Saturday.

Admission to ETT course:
The Association of Self-Financed Colleges of Education (ETT) at a meeting on Friday decided to start process of admission to ETT course for the session 2010-12 from August 15. Association president S.K. Sharma said the representatives of 21 colleges participated in the meeting to discuss procedure, fee structure etc.

Kavi darbar: The Punjab Sahitya Sabha in collaboration with the Punjab Language Department organised a ‘Sawan Kavi Darbar’ and launched a tree plantation drive here on Friday. DC Shruti Singh inaugurated the plantation drive by planting a 
sapling.

Rs 10,000, gold rings snatched:
Two motorcycle-borne armed robbers snatched a purse containing Rs 10,000, three gold rings and two bank passbooks from a woman, Mahinder Kaur, at Mohalla Ankhi Nagar here this evening.Mahinder Kaur, who came from Mahilpur to meet her relatives, was going to their house in a rickshaw when the snatchers struck.The police has registered a case.

Statue installed:
Dr RP Vij, general secretary, Dewan Harkrishan Das SD Public School, installed a statue of Goddess Saraswati on the school campus. Students presented a group dance. Principal Neelinderjit Kaur Sandhu enlisted the school’s achievements. The school has started new games like horse-riding, shooting, fencing and archery. Among others present on the occasion included Ajay Krishan, senior vice-president, RC Sharma, joint secretary and Vishal Krishan.

Woman shot dead
: A woman was allegedly gunned down and two others received serious injuries in a lethal attack allegedly by a group of armed co-villagers at Kasni village here on Friday. The deceased has been identified as Rajbala (32) while the injured as Vinod (24) and Monu (4). An old enmity is believed to be behind the incident. The police has registered a murder case against Kartar Singh, his son Narender, Balwan and Raj Kumar, alias Gawadi.

Scooterist killed in mishap:
In a hit-and-run case, a recklessly driven truck crushed a scooterist on Thursday. According to sources, the accident took place on the NH-22 in the main market of Pinjore when Gurpreet Singh was on his way towards HMT. Gurpreet died on the spot. The body was sent to the Civil Hospital, Kalka, for autopsy. The truck driver managed to flee from the spot. The police has registered a case against the absconding driver. The deceased was a resident of HMT Colony, Pinjore.
