Games streetlighting scam
New Delhi, August 3 The CBI today registered case against some MCD officials and a private firm for alleged irregularities in a streetlighting project undertaken by the civic body ahead of the Commonwealth Games (CWG). "There is no point taking any action till the CBI comes out with its report on the case," said the mayor. However, the leaders in the corporation have reacted strongly to the move. "It is not only the MCD that has been found guilty of the charges, even the agencies like Public Works Department (PWD) and Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has been found involved in financial irregularities. But no cases have been registered against them," said Subhash Arya, Leader of House in MCD. The CBI move comes after the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) wrote to the agency to register a corruption case against some MCD officials in connection with irregularities in a tender issued for a CWG project worth several crore. While on the other side, the MCD has claimed that CWG projects are likely to be completed by 30 August. The status of the works was reviewed at the meeting of works committee. "Repeated delay and failing in completion of works by contractor was taken seriously. Illegal road cutting continuously was also matter of concern in the meeting," said Jagdish Mamgain, chairman of the committee. He said that the parking facilities in the vicinity of Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and at the training venue of DPS, R.K. Puram, is likely to be completed by August 10. Approach roads of Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Thyagaraj Stadium, R.K Khanna Stadium, Dr. Karni Singh shooting range and Chattharshal Stadium are in progress and likely to be complete by August 31. "Upgradation works on roads and lanes around hotels and guest houses in Paharganj, Karol Bagh and city zones are also likely to be completed by August-end. Out of the 808 waterless urinals in different zones, the construction of 445 waterless urinals is in progress and is likely to be completed by August. 30 and 206 urinals have already been completed," he said. |
Relieve CM, Gill, Kalmadi of CWG duties: BJP
New Delhi, August 3 Delhi BJP chief Vijender Gupta and former BJP national president Venkaiah Naidu in a conference urged the government to appoint a time-bound judicial commission to probe into the bungling. They alleged that the Queen's Baton Relay bungling by two members of the organising committee (OC) had come to light which proved that public money was being looted in the name of Games. The leaders said on April 29, Kalmadi had written a letter to the sports ministry, defending both the OC members. However, they were not included in the team visiting Australia for Queen's Baton Relay. Gupta alleged that the government had deliberately delayed the construction of Games projects. Now, the projects were being completed in haste. They further alleged that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress chairperson Sonia Gandhi were deliberately avoiding inaugurating the stadiums or sports complex, so that when the corruption came to light they may defend themselves by saying that they had not inaugurated any of them. The CVC, CAG, CBI, Indian High Commission in London and other government agencies have already started exposing the corruption. The Delhi government has diverted the Rs 744.35 crore allotted for SC, ST and minority welfare to the sports projects. |

Drain to stop waterlogging around IGI Airport
New Delhi, August 3 The relief comes as the 7-km-long stretch of Mahipalpur-Najafgarh drain has been declared operational and the construction agency DSC Ltd would very soon hand over the project to the Public Works Department. "The connectivity has been achieved a couple of days back and currently the finishing work is going on," said an official of DSC Ltd. Connecting the Najafgarh area along the IGI boundary wall from Mahipalpur to the Rewari railway track, the stretch, an extension of the Dwarka-Najafgarh drain, would ensure the smooth operation of the newly developed third runway at the Delhi airport. "The drain would clear the accumulated storm water from IGI Airport, thereby preventing waterlogging and disruption of air services. This is a crucial project and would actually stand as a backbone in the overall infrastructure of IGI Airport and surrounding areas. The "cut and cover" method used in constructing the drain would allow the top surface of the drain as a service road for the integrated freight complex," said the project head with DSC Ltd, K K Mutreja. Built at a cost of Rs 135 crore, the drain has been constructed across an area of 5,000 acres and the set-up has a combination of the state-of-the-art technologies, including pipe-pushing, box-pushing and laser-guided tunnelling techniques. Earlier in December last year, the first phase of the project, connecting Dwarka underpass to Najafgarh drain, was completed and the second phase covers the periphery of the entire airport. The drain has a capacity of discharging 1300 cusecs of water from the airport, 400 cusecs from Dwarka along with nearly 700 cusecs from the three villages located in the vicinity. |
