Later, a goup of at least 50 Dalit youths began pelting stones at Shingara Singh’s house and the house adjacent to it that belonged to hos brother. On receiving a complaint, the police rushed to the site. In the meantime, more Dalit youths arrived there and the stone-pelting intensified. MC POLL TODAY
Fatehabad, June 15 Tanwar, who has been visiting the town for the past three days in connection with various functions, has been keeping supporters of both groups on the tenterhooks. When the 21-members municipal council holds its first meeting tomorrow to elect office-bearers, Tanwar as MP and Gillankhera as MLA from the area will also have the right to cast their vote. The election is a matter of prestige for Gillankhera, who after denial of ticket by the Congress, won the last assembly elections as an Independent, defeating Dura Ram. He then became chief parliamentary secretary by lending support to the Hooda government. He has the support of nine councillors and badly needs the support of Tanwar, not only for MP’s own vote, but also for attracting fence-sitters. On the other hand, Dura Ram, who has the support of at least six councillors, sees the election as an opportunity to avenge his defeat in the assembly polls by installing his own men on the two key posts. His supporters are of the opinion that once Gillankhera names a councillor for the top post, several of his supporters could desert him and switch loyalty. During the past three days, both Gillankhera and Dura Ram have been holding secret talks with Tanwar. Both have hosted tea for him.

HONOUR KILLING
New Delhi, June 15 A city court today sent them to two-day police remand a day after they beat up and electrocuted 19-year-old Asha and 20-year-old Yogesh Kumar to death. Both told mediapersons on the court premises that they killed them because they brought their families disgrace. “My brother killed them. I have no regrets whatsoever. Even the boy’s family was opposed to the match and had told us to get Asha married off where ever we wanted,” said Om Prakash before he was escorted away by the police outside Rohini’s session court. Asha and Yogesh Kumar were found dead yesterday morning at her uncle’s rented house in Indraprastha Colony in the Swaroop Nagar area of north-west Delhi. The duo belonged to different castes and their relationship was not accepted by the girl’s family. The duo was killed by electrocution and stabbing after Yogesh came to meet Asha on Sunday night and was caught by Om Prakash. Although the exact cause of the death would be known after the postmortem report, the police has confirmed the signs of electrocution on the bodies of the deceased. “Yes, the two bodies have signs of electrocution, besides multiple injuries,” confirmed NS Bundela, DCP (northwest). According to him, the investigations so far point towards the role of five persons in the entire episode and after the arrest of two, the hunt is on to nab the other three. “According to our investigations so far, besides the two arrested, the role of their wives and Asha’s brother Sanjeev is also suspect. We are looking for them,” said Bundela, adding that Om Prakash and Suraj Kumar had confessed to their crime. Meanwhile, Renu, Yogesh’s elder sister, has alleged that her brother’s murder was pre-planned and that he was called to the house by Asha after her uncle forced her to do so. “Asha wanted to marry my brother but her family forcibly fixed her marriage to somebody else. On an earlier occasion, her mother had come to our place and threatened us with dire consequences if Yogesh did not stop meeting her. On Sunday night, Yogesh was called by Asha, saying that her uncle Om Prakash wanted to meet him and sort out the matter,” Renu told the media while denying that the two were caught in a compromising position. |
Relief for Sonepat landowners
Chandigarh, June 15 The rulings came on a petition filed by Thakar Dass and other petitioners against the State of Haryana. Disposing of the petition, the Bench of Justice MM Kumar and Justice Jitendra Chauhan ruled: “The real motivation behind the acquisition may not be specific public purpose and its expeditious execution, but a mere ruse to peg down the prices by issuance of notification under Section 4 and, thus, holding the citizens to ransom for years”. In their petition, Thakar Dass and others had challenged acquisition proceedings in Sonepat initiated by issuance of notification under Section 4 of the Land Acquisition Act on December 9, 1974, and declaration under Section 6 on April 7, 1976. The petitioners claimed they acquired proprietary rights on November 28, 1978, when neither the award was announced, nor an entry was made in the revenue record showing the land was the subject matter of acquisition. But on April 28, 1983, when Haryana issued notice under Section 9, the petitioners came to know about the acquisition proceedings and filed the petition on August 11, 1983, and a Division Bench on August 24, 1983, stayed the dispossession of the petitioners. The Bench ruled: “The possession of the land belonging to the petitioners has not been taken on account of continuation of stay order for the past over 26 years. It will not be efficacious to disturb the aforesaid arrangements, which have continued for such a long period.” “Even otherwise, the Full Bench judgment of this court in the Radhey Sham Gupta case will show that in a case where there is long un-explained procrastination, then either by itself or coupled with other factors, the exercise of the power of acquisition may tend to lack bona fide…. “We allow the writ petition by quashing notifications under Sections 4 and 6 of the Act qua the rights of the petitioners and the land belonging to the petitioners shall be deemed to be free from acquisition”. |
Alarmed at rising crime, industry seeks security
Yamunanagar, June 15 The members are aggrieved at the “inability” of the police to arrest those who had looted jewellery and cash from the house of Dr RS Badhawan, a resident of a HUDA locality, last week. Besides, the police has been unable to solve two other cases of dacoity, they allege. The members conveyed their concern over the deteriorating law and order situation in the district to Deputy Commissioner Ashok Sangwan at a function organised by the Yamunanagar-Jagadhri Chamber of Commerce and Industry to highlight the problems being faced by the industry here. Highlighting other demands, the members said Yamunanagar and Jagadhri were one of the oldest industrial towns of the state. However, not much attention had been paid by the government to improve the basic infrastructure for the smooth functioning of the
industry here. “We are in dire need of proper drainage and sewer facilities for the industrial area as there is extreme waterlogging during the rains in this densely populated area,” the president of the chamber, Samira Saluja, told The Tribune. Besides, proper drinking water arrangements should be made in the area. The administration should also maintain a proper fire brigade station keeping in view the large number of plywood-based units here, she added. The Deputy Commissioner assured the members that all problems of the industry would be solved on a priority basis. |
