1 killed in bloody group clash
Greater Noida, June 15 The police reached the spot of the clash an hour after being informed about it and took another four hours to bring the situation under control. All the injured were rushed to various hospitals in Dadri and Greater Noida. Devinder, one of the injured admitted to Dadri’s Naveen Hospital, succumbed to his injuries. According to information, Mustakeen, a resident of Phalaunda village, 28 km from Greater Noida, runs a motor parts shop in Jarcha town. On Saturday, three men— Mukesh, Sanjeev and Rakesh— came to his shop to get the battery of their bike changed. But the battery, which carried a year’s guarantee, developed some snag the very next day. On Sunday, Mukesh and Rakesh came to Mustakeen’s shop to return the battery, but he refused to change it. This was followed by a clash between the two parties. Both the parties lodged a report with the police. On Monday, the police arrested Mustakeen, Rakesh and Mukesh for disturbing the peace of the area. At noon, the police let off Mustakeen, while the villagers also got Rakesh and Mukesh released on bail in the evening. But some people attacked Rakesh, Mukesh and others near the village. Soon a large number of residents of the neighbouring villages armed with lathis and other weapons also joined the clash. The house of Rakesh, a Dalit, was torched in the clash. The rioters torched a few more houses. Gunshots from illegal arms were allegedly fired by both sides. |

MCD okayes trial of tax defaulters
New Delhi, June 15 Arya said though a provision already existed in the DMC Act for initiating criminal prosecution proceedings against defaulters, it could not be implemented because of the confusion as to who should take action, the law department or the house tax department. According to MCD officials, owners of an estimated 22 lakh properties in the city are not paying tax to the civic agency. The tax collection for 2009-10 fiscal was nearly Rs 250 crore less than the target of Rs 1,400 crore, though the civic agency recorded an all-time high property tax collection of Rs 1,157 crore in the year. In the year, the number of taxpayers also reached the highest-ever figure of 9.73 lakh. With owners of only about 30 per cent of properties in the city paying tax to the MCD, the cash strapped civic body is looking at various ways to increase the ambit of property tax. |

New Delhi, June 15 The Congress councilor, Preeti, said she wanted to raise her voice against the civic body for not giving proper uniforms to women sanitation workers. Preeti, the councillor from Vivek Vihar, said she made several attempts to raise the matter at the meeting, but was not allowed to speak by deputy chairman Rajesh Gehlot. “Minutes after the meet started, I requested the deputy chairman to allow me to speak, but he did not pay any heed ” said Preeti. In between the meeting, she suddenly went out and climbed atop the terrace. She started raising slogans and threatened she would not come down if her demands were not met. Games budget not even covers direct costs: Report
New Delhi, June 15 According to the report, around Rs 3,500 crore has been spent on stadiums as compared to the initial projection of Rs 150 crore. Last month, chairman of the Commonwealth Games organising committee
(OC) Suresh Kalmadi claimed that that the total budget for the Commonwealth Games was only Rs 1,620
crore, which the HLRN report claims is just the loan taken by the OC for ‘operational expenses for conducting the Games.’ The total cost for the Commonwealth Games includes expenditure of the Delhi government, the central government and other bodies—which is supposed to be a huge multiple of 1,620
crore, the report asserts. HLRN associate director and the report’s co-author
Shivani Choudhary said, “In March, director general of the Commonwealth Games
V.K. Verma had cited Rs 10,000 crore as the total cost for the Games. The ministry of youth affairs and sports
(MYAS) has provided a break-up of an estimated total cost of Rs 11,494 crore on its website. Delhi finance minister
A.K. Walia, in his budget speech in March had announced that the Delhi government had spent Rs
15,000 crore on infrastructure for the Games, so Rs 1,620 crore figure was completely false.” “The OC’s claims about the sporting infrastructure and the legacy due to the CWG are not corroborated by Delhi’s experience of the 1982 Asian Games. Studies reveal that majority of the stadiums were unused, badly maintained and rented out for weddings and Bollywood events. Delhi residents are already paying higher taxes and prices. Recent reports reveal that the Delhi government will lose Rs 65 crore due to tax waivers to the hospitality industry. The closure of markets on the first and the last day of the Games is likely to cost traders Rs 500
crore. The cons are much more than the pros here,” she added. The five-month-long research includes the study of comptroller and auditor general’s report, information received through RTI applications, interviews of experts from Delhi Urban Art Commission, documents of the Indian Olympics Association, report of CWG evaluation commission and budget documents from the Delhi and the central governments. |
