IIT entrance test: Math paper leaves majority fuming
Jalandhar, April 13 While the mathematics paper, which was given in the first half of the examination, was too lengthy, the one that came in the second half was extremely tough. “In fact, the paper was so lengthy that I could not find time to attempt some very easy questions,” said Isha,a candidate. “I had read that there was no negative marking in two sections, but I still could not find time to blacken any option randomly in the problems left unsolved,” she said. Tashi, another candidate, said, “Many students from my examination centre got so disillusioned in the first half of the paper that they did not even turn up for the second half of the paper that day.” She further said, “Though we had the advantage that there is no negative marking, but there were certain questions which had very long range of options like zero to 50. The probability of filling up the right answer without solving it was very remote.” Akshay, a candidate from Faridabad, however, seemed quite confident. “I have tallied my answers with the solved papers available on the net. I think I should be able to score well. I do not think there is any point in cribbing. If the paper was difficult, it was the same for everyone. It should rather be a boon to intelligent students for they had a chance to take an edge. Also if the mathematics paper was difficult, the chemistry paper was quite easy,” he quipped. |
Extending help to visually impaired
Jalandhar, April 13 The programme held at the Guru Nanak Library was aimed at motivating students by providing them scholarships to the tune of Rs 17,000. As many as 17 students pursuing graduation and post graduation courses were handed over cash prizes of Rs 1,000 each, as scholarships. Chief Parliamentary Secretary for Health and Family Welfare, Avinash Chander, who was the chief guest of the programme, announced a grant of Rs 50,000 for the welfare of He also honoured students by giving them cash awards. Hailing this initiative he said, “This initiative will go a long way in motivating visually challenged students. It is heartening to see how the visually challenged students, despite disability, have been excelling in life. These students are a source of inspiration for all of us”, he added. Students came from far off places like Malerkotla, Patiala, Ludhiana and those from Jalandhar. Sarabjeet Singh a visually impaired B.A-III student from Malerkotla who received the scholarship said, “I am feeling on top of the world today. Apart from giving us scholarships the state government should open up job avenues for us so that we can lead an independent life”. President of the manch, Subhash Gupta and his wife Sanjeeva Kumari, both visually impaired, said it was due to the efforts of General Secretary, Avtar Singh, that they were able to provide scholarships to these students. Avtar, who is a Punjabi teacher at the local Lyallpur Khalsa Senior Secondary School, has been working for the welfare of the blind for the past some time. “There are associations which work for the welfare of the visually impaired but the end result is mere sympathy. At this platform, students would be guided for higher education and related job avenues”, he added. However, students rued government apathy in providing them any special assistance till date. Teachers maintained that despite meeting Punjab Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal repeatedly in the past, their genuine demands of new job avenues had not been addressed. “Job avenues for the visually impaired often remain restricted Sangeeta Kapoor, a visually challenged teacher from Government Institute for Blind, Jamalpur, Ludhiana said, “The welfare schemes for the disabled by the union government are marred by lack of awareness among the visually challenged. We are people with special needs and the state authorities should ensure proper implementation of schemes. Special job avenues should be started so that we can also become financially independent.” |
Malnourished cows die slow death as administration looks the other way
Jalandhar, April 13 The district administration which has turned a blind eye not only towards the upkeep of these animals but has also been ignoring steps to be taken for their fodder and medical care. Moreover, a shortage of staff at the gaushala has also hit the upkeep of these animals hard. Inadequate fodder has nearly reduced to half the diet of 720 cows, housed in a gaushala located at Bulandpur, following which their health is gradually deteriorating. In the absence of proper feed, the animals are dying a slow death. Enquiries by The Tribune revealed that the gaushala, managed by the Gaushala Pinjra Pole Committee, has 720 animals - 234 male, 132 female and 292 calves. Of the total females, four are lactic, 10 pregnant while 62 are heifers. As per records, the management is able to get green fodder ranging from 3 tons to 3.5 tons (on an average basis) for them daily. The green fodder is mixed with two times husk or hay before being fed to the animals. As per veterinary experts, an adult cow needs 40 kg of fodder every day. Therefore, the daily fodder requirement of 720 animals is roughly 20 tons. This clearly shows that the cows are underfed and are on the verge of starvation. Enquiries revealed that the Jalandhar Municipal Corporation has promised to give Rs 1 lakh per month to the gaushala from April onwards but the previous records show that the civic body failed to pay for the past nine months at the rate of The upkeep of the gaushala is not up to the mark as there are only 20 caretakers against a requirement of 50. Committee manager Ravi Kakkar, however, ruled out the shortage of feed and staff. “We are going to start mechanised sanitation works instead of manual work,” he claimed. Certain good samaritans of the city and the surrounding areas have continuously been donating generously for the food and vet care. Animal lovers say though Jalandhar and neighbouring districts have a good population of NRIs and industrialists, only a few persons come up for the welfare of this sacred animal. |
