Student hurt in college shooting, 1 held
Chandigarh, April 13

Tribune photo: Manoj Mahajan The growing problem of student violence surfaced today outside DAV College in Sector 10 when a group of students opened fire from a .2mm revolver on a fellow student, who was fortunate to escape with a minor injury after a bullet grazed his left thigh.

A big no to mainstream politics
Chandigarh, April 13
Gone is the era when student politics was synonymous with the department of laws. Many of the present day student-politicians at the PU are not only enrolled in MSc courses and PhD programmes, but some are also studying professional courses such as MBA and Bachelors in Dental Sciences. While some boast of grabbing the coveted junior and senior research scholarships (JRF and SRF), others have performed moderately in entrance and semester exams.

Amarjit Singh Mavi, the lone fireman of the city who lost his life during an operation in 2008, has become “anonymous” to his parent department of the MC. Mavi is the only fireman who died during a fire dousing operation on October 20, 2008, in Sector 22.

In a significant development, GMADA has slapped demolition orders on the owner of a prominent farmhouse that only five months ago was the venue for a lavish post-wedding party hosted by Bikram Singh Majithia, brother-in-law of Punjab Deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal.

Strange as it may sound, but despite being a compact and well-planned city run by bureaucrats, Chandigarh does not have a centralised ambulance service. In contrast to centralised numbers for the police (100) and the fire brigade (101), Chandigarh’s centralised ambulance service number (102) actually belongs to the GMSH-16.

In the absence of a centralised service in the city, the number is meant only for ambulances of the GMSH-16

The harvest festival of Punjab, Baisakhi, was celebrated with great zeal in the city today. The festival was marked with chabeels, kirtans and shabad recitals in various gurdwaras, which were decorated with colourful lights. Langars were also served at various gurdwaras.

Preparations in full swing

Preparations are in full swing as lakhs of devotees were likely to pay obeisance at the Nadda Sahib Gurdwara, associated with 10th Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh, in view of the Baisakhi festival to be held tomorrow.

Diarrhoea: 32 fresh cases reported
Chandigarh, April 13
Thirty-two fresh cases of diarrhoea were reported at city hospitals today. With this, the number of patients suffering from the disease has gone up to 222 in the past five days.

Tribune photo: Manoj Mahajan High drama prevailed outside Tagore Theatre today morning when a youth denied entry to the director of the theatre by parking his car at the main entrance. The youth, who was later identified as Puneet Sachdeva, a resident of Sector 44, locked himself in the car and refused to come out. The police was called and it took more than an hour for the cops to persuade him to come out of his car.

A resident of Ballo Majra village got injured in his son’s rivalry with college students.
In his complaint to the police, Gagandeep Singh said some boys from Rajpura Phul, near Bathinda, threatened him over the phone and said they would come to his house and set his belongings on fire. The attackers reached the house of Gagandeep Singh and fired gun shots at him, which hit his father Narinder Singh.

Consumer Court
Complainant told to pay Rs 10,000
Chandigarh, April 13
The Chandigarh Consumer Redressal Forum today fined Ramneek Sood, a resident of Panchkula, Rs 10,000 for filing a false and frivolous case against a Mani Majra-based United Insurance Company Limited. The amount has been specified as a compensation for costs provided under Section 26 of the Consumer Protection Act.

Dream of a retired government teacher to own a house in Chandigarh turned sour when she was duped of Rs 11 lakh at her house in Greenpark Colony, Zirakpur, on March 25. The case came to light today when the victim, Puspha Devi, approached the Zirakpur police for help.
