Now, govt school takes to publicity campaign
Jalandhar, April 1 The goal is to stop slow but steady decline in enrolment apparent in the past decade. “We believe our school is strong and offers good education along with other facilities. We have highly educated staff and a commendable building. But a trend has been observed among the parents to send their wards to private institutions, although they charge hefty fee. “The campaign is aimed at generating awareness among the public about the many facilities available here at a much lower price and motivate the parents to enrol their children with us,” said Renuka, a computer faculty member at Basti Bawa Khel School. “The campaign focuses on young parents. Catching the kids when they start high schooling undergirds the campaign as it becomes difficult to get the students switched to government schools from private ones, especially if they are doing well. But it in no way means that others are neglected. “We try our best to persuade them into shifting their wards to our school. Every parent, however poor, desires the best for their kids and if we offer best quality education at the most affordable rates, they will surely cooperate with us. Most of the parents gave a patient hearing, some of them even seemed convinced,” she added. The school had strength of about 380 students the previous session and the faculty expects it to go up by at least 50 students this year. They have pasted pamphlets in the nearby areas stating the plus points of government education. “The school offers free computer education up to class VII, scores of scholarships, free books and much more. Private schools burn a hole in the pockets of poor and middle class parents. But government schools like our’s offer better qualities at almost negligible cost,” commented Devinder Kaur, Head Mistress of the school. But since the condition of many of the government schools is miserable, people prefer to go for private institutions. “I want my child to study well and become an officer in future. We don’t mind cutting other expenses to pay for his education in a good private school. Teachers are insincere and infrastructure deficient in most of the government-run schools,” Jagpal Singh, an auto-rickshaw driver, said. |

City falling victim to hoarding menace
Jalandhar, April 1 Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal has given strict orders against displaying any posters, except for religious ones, that too for mere three days. The Ram Navami is over but the billboards are intact at most of the places. Every time there is some religious or political event, the number of flyers, hoardings, billboards and posters go up for untold duration. Put up in tearing hurry, some of them are even placed precariously, ignoring safety rules. “We urgently need well enforced rules where companies are given permission to advertise only on commercial buildings, at a stipulated height. All the safety standards should be well-observed and adhered with,” said Ravinder Kaur, a schoolteacher and city resident. Seems like the Municipal Corporation has virtually compromised its responsibility to ensure smooth flow of traffic, remove ugly spots and enhance city’s scenic beauty for advertisement revenue. It is clearly mentioned under Section 11 of Advertising By-laws (Part II) that advertisers should not install, affix or hang publicity hoardings that may cause impediment in traffic flow or danger to motorists. But, alas, it was never observed. “Gone are the days when you could commute easily in the city. Risk of life has increased manifold in the recent years and the billboards have definitely added to the problem. Moreover, they bombard you with unwanted suggestions; leaving you feeling claustrophobic by the time you reach your destination,” commented Gurcharn Singh, a city resident. Be them religious, political or those advertising banks, hospitals, beauty clinics educational institutions or restaurants, big and small hoardings have been placed at all the prominent places in the city. What is worse most of the hoardings are strategically placed on the busiest roads. Scores of boards can be seen at the road leading to bus-stand and from MC office main gate to jail, hindering free flow of traffic. And to add to the problem, the ‘Stick no Bills’ signs are often ignored with advertising posters glued on many walls around the city. The MC admits to keeping a check on these but confides that it is an uphill task, which can only be accomplished with public co-operation. “There should be some law under which it should be made mandatory for all to install billboards of uniform size so that these couldn’t disfigure the city’s face. The concerned officials should ensure strict implementation of the rules. Ironically, the elected councillors are completely indifferent to their duties,” concluded resident Sushil Kumar. OfficialSpeak
Municipal Corporation Commissioner Vinay Bublani says: “We are mulling the removal of all the hoardings and billboards from the eight major roundabouts in the city. The decision is already through, only enforcement needs to be done which will take some time. A dialogue with the police commissioner will ensure the force needed to carry out the drive. As far as the time limit of the hoardings is concerned, most of the out-dated ones have been removed. The left out ones will be removed in the first phase of the anti-hoarding drive.” |
Auto-lifters run over, kill rickshaw-puller
Jalandhar, April 1 A cop, regulating vehicular traffic at a T-point, had a miraculous escape as the auto-snatchers sped away with the vehicle despite being signalled to stop by the cop, Surjit Singh. They were being chased by the owner of the vehicle after he noticed them travelling in the same vehicle with a fake registration number (PB-10-CR-1070) on Nehru Road. The incident occurred while three miscreants were trying to speed away and took a left turn towards Alaska Chowk while coming from BMC Chowk. The speeding car hit the rickshaw flinging the puller, Peter Masih, a resident of Lamba Pind Chowk, to a distance. Masih succumbed to the head injuries on the spot. The car occupants also hit a cyclist while escaping from the scene. According to the police, the miscreants had snatched the vehicle (PB-08-HT-4918) from a city-based doctor from Ludhiana at gun-point late on Sunday night. SHO H.S. Bhalla said an alert had been sounded to nab the snatchers. The body was handed over to the family members after a post-mortem examination at the local Civil Hospital. A case has been registered against the snatchers at Baradari police station in this regard, he added. —
