Food Prices: Sheila warns traders
New Delhi, February 6 Speaking to newsmen on the sidelines of the Prime Minister’s conference on prices of essential commodities here today, the Delhi Chief Minister sought to crack the whip on retailers in the wake of spiralling food prices. “Amid rising food price situation, retailers think prices of every commodity should be high. But that’s not the case. We will take action against retailers who are overcharging and we will do it,” she said. She announced that Weights and Measures department officials will henceforth visit retail shops, including bigger stores regularly and take stringent steps against anyone found overcharging. The Chief Minister said “high food prices concern the people of Delhi” and expressed hope that “there would be some impact as we have started selling pulses through 386 outlets”. NAFED has collaborated with the Delhi government to supply Arhar dal, Moong, Urad, Parmal rice and edible oils at 30 per cent lower than the market rates from February 5, she noted. She felt that the Centre and states should share equally the responsibility of bringing down the food prices. “It is not good to blame each other (Centre and state) for rising prices. Therefore, I think we should collectively tackle the problem. The Centre is ready to address its shortcomings, while the states should also try to do so,” she added. The Chief Minister claimed that she has taken some steps against hoarders which have borne fruit, saying, “We have been taking action against hoarders and as a result mill owners and wholesalers have come forward to supply pulses (dals) and atta (wheat flour) at much cheaper rates.” She also acknowledged that grain and kerosene allotted for families below poverty line (BPL) and Antodaya Anna Yojna (AAY) are not reaching the targeted sections of society and instead being diverted by ration shops sellers/owners themselves. “This (diversion) is happening and everybody is aware of it. Grain is not reaching BPL and AAY families,” she said. |
Delhi architect helps Citywalk sail through recession
New Delhi, February 6 It’s the choice of brands, balance of products, entertainment zones and eateries that managed to pull buyers with different tastes in right numbers were pivotal in its success. A young Delhi-based architect and her colleague have been feted for it. And it’s natural that they are going places in the still uncertain times. Shilpa Malik, an architect, and her colleague Pranay Sinha, have been credited for making this mall that opened in October 2007 a success to the extent that it has the highest sales per square feet among all retail destinations and is one of the most expensive spaces rented out in the Capital. Talking to The Tribune, Malik dismissed that the mall was a success due to its location. If only location had been the key, other malls would also have been successful. A shopping centre specialist and a trained architect, Malik has spent more than 10 years of her life in retail business. She is counted among the most experienced people in her field in the country. Malik, president and CEO of Starcentres, a company founded by Sinha and her, is coming with its first project in Bangaluru, in the heart of the city. The firm is also working on a destination tourism project called Grand Venezia in the NCR. “Citywalk is designed to offer something for everyone and achieve a balance of trade categories like— food, garments, personal care and accessories,” said Malik. In process of creating a shopping place for south Delhi women, brands here have been selected from among 1,000 brands. It will have one of the world’s most sought after apparel brand Zara opening its first store in India in t three months. To ensure uniformity in aesthetics of the area, the state government had asked builders to follow a pattern while constructing anything new. “We followed the guidelines given to us prior to the construction of Select Citywalk but we managed to stand out,” said Malik. |

Children pavilion a hit
at book fair
New Delhi, January 6 One of the most vibrant pavilions at the fair that has had good business and endless visitors happen to be the children’s corner. Organised by National Book Trust, which is also behind the fair, the pavilion remained a prime attraction because of not only books, which are in plenty, but also for various activities planned for the children all week long. This pavilion apart, a majority of other stalls have also dedicated a corner to children books. Most children book publishers boasted of having raked in more profits as compared to the previous fair. There are a number of comics, books on games and pictorial guides. Children of all tastes have found something here. “Books based on TV shows like ‘Hannah Montana’, movies like ‘The Golden Compass’ and ‘Ben10’ are selling like hot cakes,” said Madhur from Grolic Publications. “I love coming to this fair and this is my second visit. I always wanted to own the original Harry Potter series. I purchased all the six books of the series at discounted rates. I have also purchased a couple of short story books for my younger sister,” said Mrinal, a class 7th student. However, several publishers said most children read what is approved by their parents and hence the genre that sells the most is educational books. “Reference books do well because parents buy them for their kids. From different subjects like English, maths, chemistry to other sciences, reference books are most sought after. Encyclopedias are also in big demand,” Nayan Karthik, a publisher said. With Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) hitting school curricula soon, books on CCE for class IX are also finding a large number of takers. Parul, a parent, said, “Children do not need prompting to read fun and fiction books, but educational books cannot be ignored. It’s our responsibility to make sure that reading also serves a larger purpose. Some monitoring is definitely required.” Special efforts were also made at the children’s pavilion to engage maximum readers such as movie screening, skits, plays and other fun activities by several NGOs. |
Cops seek change in Games’
marathon venue
New Delhi, February 6 The police has cited traffic problems as the reason for the objection. In a review meeting held this week, the police suggested that the two events be shifted to Greater Noida for better traffic management. The meeting was attended by representatives of the Delhi government, traffic police and Commonwealth Games organising committee. “Talkatora Stadium will host boxing tournaments. Besides, a 20-km walk and marathon have been planned in and around the stadium. The traffic police has objected on the grounds that the events would compound traffic management,” said a senior official of the Delhi government. However, according to sources, members of the organising committee have dismissed the police’s suggestions, stating that the sale of tickets has already started. The officials also stated that shifting the events to a new location would lead to management problems. They said that it was too late to shift them to some other venue. “The transportation planning for athletes and Games officials along with representatives of participating countries have been done in view of the scheduled events’ locations and the Games Village. Any change in the venues would disturb the planning, which has been done by the Delhi government,” said the official. |
