Kidnappers held with Rs 1.46-cr ransom
‘Verify uniform buyers’ Keeping in view that some criminals use police uniform to commit crimes, the Delhi police is planning to make it must for shopkeepers selling such material to keep a record of buyers. "We are planning to make it mandatory for the shopkeepers selling uniforms of police, paramilitary or the armed forces to keep a record of those buying such material. They will also have to verify their identities," said Y.S. Dadwal during a press meet today.
New Delhi, January 25 "The accused-- Kamal Goel (40), manager of a construction company, and Vinay Mishra (25), son of a retired sub-inspector of the Delhi police-- were arrested last evening from a house in Sector 9, Rohini, after a brief scuffle. We have also recovered Rs 1.46 crore of the ransom money," said Y.S. Dadwal, commissioner of police. The boy, Nitin Aggarwal (11), a student of G.D. Goenka Public School, was kidnapped three days ago while he was on his way to school in Rohini's Sector 22. He was in his car when the kidnappers intercepted the car and kidnapped him. They snatched the phone of Nitin's driver and made the ransom call to Nitin's father, Ravi Aggarwal, from the phone. "The boy's father is known to the owner of the company where Kamal works. Kamal studied the activities of the boy before kidnapping him. After abduction, he kept Nitin at his house. He had sent his wife and children to his in-laws," Dadwal said. "The accused are novices, but had also attempted kidnapping a businessman in Pitampura in October last year," Dadwal added. "The family was asked to pay Rs 2 crore, but it paid Rs 1.50 crore on the intervening night of January 23 and 24, after which Nitin was freed. However, the police continued to track the kidnappers and finally managed to arrest them," said Dadwal. Dadwal, however, evaded the question about whether the ransom was paid after consultation with the police. "We never encourage anyone to pay ransom. However, some times the sentiments of the family have to be taken in consideration. I would not comment further," said Dadwal. Besides the money, the police has also recovered two cars and Delhi police uniform from the residence of the accused. The third accused, Dharmender, is absconding and efforts are on to nab him. |
JNU students planning union poll despite SC ban
New Delhi, January 25 However, student leaders told The Tribune that that they have decided to work for elections this year as the matter has long been pending before the apex court and will still take a considerable time before it reaches a verdict. “We have been complying with the ban but the matter has been pending before a Constitution Bench. So, we have decided to hold elections till the time they pronounce their order,” said Dhananjay Tripathi, former president, JNUSU. So far, JNU’s Joint Student Struggle Committee has been fighting the case against the ban the court on November 12 last year put the matter before the Constitution Bench, concluding that the matter concerned the Constitution of India. The JNU constitution says an extension has to be obtained from majority students in a general body meeting after the term of present JNUSU office-bearers expire. Their term expires on March 31, but students are likely to go for holding of elections in the general body meeting scheduled for February 2. Tripathi said students had no representation in any of the university’s decision-making bodies and the administration was not taking their issues seriously. Various party sources said it could take at least four years for the Constitution Bench to reach a conclusion and they could not really wait so long. P. Anand of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) echoed the views of Tripathi and said JNUSU had been one of the most vibrant students’ movements in the country. “It is now dying due to the lack of elections. It is a tragedy that one of the most peaceful and democratic elections are being suppressed like this,” he said. While putting a ban on the elections, the court had said students much older than the age limit of 25 years were contesting JNUSU elections, in violation of the Lyngoh Committee recommendations. Any election though could land student leaders in trouble for “contempt of court”, Renu, a leader from Progressive Students’ Union (PSU), said student leaders should be prepared to meet any eventuality. |

Youth to help save heritage
New Delhi, January 25 According to officials of the two organisations— Delhi chapter of the Archeological Survey of India (ASI) and Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage, (INTACH), an NGO— bringing in youngsters and sensitising them to the need of preserving symbols of India’s rich past is the need of the hour. While the ASI has roped in students of several schools and colleges, INTACH has started a project ‘Filmit India’. The project which is currently underway in three cities of Delhi, Chennai and Kolkata, involves training students on preserving nation’s monumental heritage. ASI officials said they would hold interactive sessions with students to educate them about preservation of monuments. “We have initiated a heritage conservation awareness programme under which students will be responsible for cleaning monuments. We will ask them to pledge that they would not scribble anything on any historical sites and would also prevent others from doing so,” said K.K. Mohammad, superintending engineer of ASI, Delhi. INTACH’s chairperson S.K. Misra today said at a conference that INTACH would create cadres of young volunteers in rural quarters of the country. “We are labelled as an urban body. So we want to expand our reach into the hinterland and bring a large population under our awareness exercise,” Misra said. The efforts to include the youth in the drive falls in tandem with the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) decision of introducing heritage chapter in the CBSE syllabi of Class XI and XII from 2011. Misra said that INTACH would highlight the issues in its two-day all- India convenors’ conference on global warming and climate change. The meet is scheduled to begin from January 27 at India International Centre. Representatives from all the 155 chapters of INTACH would gather at the conference to discuss various issues. He said as the youth loved films, they would use visuals to impress them. “Students of 22 schools in three cities would be trained to film, edit and write scripts on the country’s heritage. We are going to show some of these films during the two-day convenors’ conference,” said Shobita Punja in-charge of the heritage education division of
INTACH. |

Stars lend glamour to Punjabi film fest
New Delhi, January 25
Producers, directors and other personalities from Punjabi cinema have extended their support for future festivals. The number of movies screened and the duration of the festival will also be increased in the next edition.” Saving the best for the end, Oscar-nominated “Warris Shah” was screened today. Actress Divya Dutta from the movie along with producer Manjit Mann was present during the screening and for the discussion after that. Later in the day, it was a full house as Raj Babbar entered the auditorium during the screening of his movies, ‘Udham Singh’ and ‘Channa Pardesi’. Speaking on her movie “Warris Shah,” nominated for the Oscar and three national awards, Divya Dutta said, “Rarely one would have come across such an expensive film in Punjabi Cinema. As the film depicted life and times of ‘Warris Shah’, it required a township of the 18th century. It is like any mainstream big budget Bollywood movie. Even the Punjabi producers are capable of big budget “larger than life” movies; all that is needed is trust in the direction and the script.” ‘Udham Singh’, a path-breaking Punjabi film on the life of Udham Singh who killed General Edward Harry Dwyer responsible for the Jallianwalla Bagh massacre also remained one of the chief highlights of the day. Released in 1978, Raj Babbar’s ‘Channa Pardesi’ was also screened today. Remembering his teenage years fondly, Raj Babbar said, “I was a struggling actor when ‘Channa Pardesi’ was made. We had to sell our personal belongings for the movie. Thankfully the film turned out to be a huge success, and since then many Bollywood films have also picked up the movie’s theme. Certain actors have worked hard in setting the foundation of the Punjabi cinema; it needs more support and enthusiasm to thrive.” “There is unlimited talent in the Punjabi cinema. Ideas that fail to materialise here are aped by others. I believe that such film festivals are a potential platform to introduce the Punjabi cinema to the common people,” he added. |
