Illegal posters, banners to go
New Delhi, January 19 At a meeting of additional commissioners, zonal deputy commissioners and heads of departments, he directed them to sternly deal with cases of defacement of properties in public view. He said that January 21, 22, 28 and 29 are the dates fixed for the campaign and it would be a regular process. He instructed the officers to coordinate with government departments of Delhi, Delhi police, non-government organisations, resident welfare organisations and traders’ associations wherever required. “The officers have been told to lodge FIRs against the violators without delay. Every Department of MCD, whose building has been defaced, will separately lodge an FIR. This FIR will be lodged by the caretaker of the building. The action taken shall be regularly monitored at the level of the deputy commissioner concerned. He said the number of FIRs lodged under this section will be sent on a weekly basis to the advertisement department, so that the same shall be compiled and put up before commissioner for weekly meetings. The commissioner said that the strategy is to free Delhi from posters and banners in view of Commonwealth Games. “There is an existing Act which if used properly and sensitively, will have the desired impact. The awareness campaign launched alongside, will initiate the process and coordinated attempts will make an impact on changing the mindset of people who are violating the rules and regulations and defacing the properties in Delhi,” he added. |
Water treatment plant
to benefit North Delhi
New Delhi, January 19 The capacity of the plant is to recycle 11 million gallon daily (MGD) potable water from the wastewater. This would benefit more than five lakh residents living in the Burari area of north Delhi. The plant has been constructed by the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) with a cost of Rs 27.8 crore. The Chief Minister said the recycling plant would treat the wastewater generated during the initial process of raw water treatment and would be fully integrated with the existing treatment facility at Wazirabad. She further said that the DJB was making efforts to ensure that safe and clean drinking water was available to every resident of Delhi. She urged the residents of Delhi to conserve water. The DJB will build similar plants in Bhagirathi and Chandrawal water treatment complexes. A recycle plant at Haiderpur water treatment plant complex commissioned last year is already running at full capacity. Upon completion of all the projects by March, these plants will collectively add a total of 45 MGD to Delhi’s water supply, she added. Vice-chairman of the DJB, Ramakant Goswami said that these plants would help save roughly 10 per cent of previously discarded wastewater generated during water treatment operations. Using advanced technologies over a multi-level treatment process, impurities are removed, making it fit for human consumption. |
Cycle lanes to come up soon
New Delhi, January 19 The news has come in response to a memorandum submitted by the Delhi Cycling Club (DCC) to Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit. The assurance was communicated through a letter by the Chief Minister to convenor of the Delhi Cycling Club, Nalin Sinha. The DCC had called upon Dikshit last month and submitted a memorandum of demands. “We met the Chief Minister and sought her urgent intervention to make Delhi roads safer and build suitable infrastructure and facilities for lakhs of people who commute by bicycle but are always at the risk of pushed or hit by motor vehicles,” said the Sinha. Responding to cyclists’ primary demand of developing bicycle tracks or lanes on all major roads, Dikshit wrote in her letter “Work on Street-scaping on various roads of the city is being carried out, and dedicated space for cyclists would be created on all these roads.” Gradually, the government is planning to introduce the dedicated lane on all major stretches. About other demands like instructing concerned authorities to make motor vehicle users more responsible, disciplined and sensitive towards cyclists, the Chief Minister reportedly wrote “Other suggestions are also relevant and would be under consideration to promote this mode of transport.” Several other surveys have also indicated earlier that the streets of the Capital were not friendly for the pedestrians and cyclists. Dikshit was happy with the work of the club. “In a city like Delhi, cycling would be the most effective mode of transport to combat pollution and congestion on the roads,” she wrote. Welcoming the decision of the government, Sinha said, “It is a very positive step that the government has decided to include bicycle in its policy and planning.” He added that the government would have to spend only a fraction of its road and flyover budget to develop safe and segregated bicycle lanes and cyclist-friendly infrastructure in the city. Expressing confidence over better facilities for cyclists in Delhi, Sinha pointed out that once the dedicated lanes and bicycle-friendly facilities were introduced, the club was confident that the city would see a large number of people leaving their motor vehicles behind. |
‘Women should get money as per matrimonial home status’
Tribune News Service
New Delhi, January 19 “In my opinion, it is the status of the complainant enjoyed by her in her matrimonial home according to which she is entitled to get maintenance. Further, if the income of the husband increases …the wife gets entitled to enhanced maintenance. The same analogy applies here also,” said Metropolitan Magistrate, Twinkle Wadhwa. These remarks were made by the court while a man contended that his wife was accustomed to a very moderate standard of living and should be awarded maintenance as per the status of her parental home. The court, refusing to submissions made by the respondent, awarded a total of Rs 12,000 per month to a woman and her three-and-half-year-old daughter out of the wedlock for maintenance and rent. “In the absence of any defence, I presume all allegations levied by the complainant are true and that domestic violence has taken place against her. She has been neglected by her husband and is entitled to maintenance,” the court said. However, before taking the judgment, the court also took into consideration a report submitted by the protection officer, saying that the woman was harassed by her in-laws and proposed she be given maintenance as per the husband’s income as she has been living separately from about six months after their marriage since 2005. The woman had approached the court seeking maintenance as well as residence order under the Domestic Violence Act from her husband working as a Chartered Accountant in NDPL, alleging that he used to earn around Rs 90,000 per month from his job and from some fixed deposits and investments. |
PR babus get tips on communication
Gurgaon, January 19 The director of information, public relations and cultural affairs, Shiv Raman Gaur, who had conceived the idea to organise such workshops, was the chief-guest on the occasion. The one-day workshop focused on enhancing the communication and drafting skills of information and public relations officials. This was the second division-level workshop in which district information and public relations officers, assistant information and public relations officers, district publicity organisers and field publicity assistants participated. First such workshop of Ambala division was organised in Chandigarh recently. “In view of the power of information in the fast changing scenario, the IPR officers will have to expand their role,” Gaur maintained in his inaugural address. He advised the PR officials to create information data banks relating to their areas of operation at their offices. “The data bank should include details of all important developmental projects and major thrust areas of the government,” he said, adding that the data and information should be updated from time to time. Om Thanvi, the chief editor of Jansatta, Delhi, detailed the participants on various aspects of reporting. He observed that the role of media was not only to provide information but also to awaken the society. In this, the IPR officers can play the role of mediator between the common masses and the government, he added. Chandigarh-based veteran journalist P.K.Modi explained the basic skills required for reporting an event and drafting the report. Delhi-based media professional Raj Gopal spoke about communication strategies, while psycho-metrician Dr Madhu Sharma deliberated on capacity-building and positive attitude. |
Salman sat on horseback
for 150 days for ‘Veer’
New Delhi, January 19 “The trend of hero worship, where hero is the defender and everyone relies on him, that we saw 20 years ago is back,” he said. Calling blockbusters like 3 Idiots and Tare Zameen Par experimental films which took up social issues, Salman said today Bollywood needed its heroes more than anything. Veer, a period film set in the pre-Independence times around 1857, would be released on January 22. Khan has also written the script of the film, which is being touted as one of the most expensive films of Bollywood. In the film, Khan plays the character of Veer opposite debutante Zarine Khan. Other actors are Mithun Chakraborty, Sohail Khan and Jackie Shroff. Salman said that no actor or producer in the industry wanted to be a part of a period film. “These films need 10 times the money required to make any other film,” said the macho Khan, whose last release ‘Wanted’ has been one of the few commercially successful films last year. Sharing his experiences of shooting for Veer, Khan said he had to sit on horses for almost 150 days. About zeroing in on the new girl for the lead role, Khan said the filmmaker could not find a girl for the role till two weeks before the shooting started. “By chance I saw Zarine in the Film City and knew that she was perfect for the role. However, she had to go through screen tests and photo shoots,” he said. Unaffected by the failure of period films like Ashoka and Mangal Pandey, Khan said if the film did not do well, he was ready to take the blame for it. Khan’s involvement with the film was evident from the red shirt that he was wearing. The shirt had ‘Veer’ written in capital letters. Besides promoting the film, the actor also attended an award ceremony organised by the Anti Terrorist Front. |

Bengal cops quiz Ghandy
New Delhi, January 19 A jail official reported that a team of CID sleuths arrived at Tihar central jail and questioned him for about two hours. The interrogation was conducted after the West Bengal police sought directions from Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kaveri Baweja on Monday to allow them to interrogate Ghandy for his alleged involvement in the case. The court directed the jail authorities to consider the plea of the state police in accordance with the prison rules. Public prosecutor Navin Kumar, appearing on behalf of the West Bengal police, said, “It is essential to interrogate the accused for the purpose of investigation of the present (Salboni) case. Necessary direction is also sought to the jail superintendent to permit the accused to be interrogated.” On November 2, 2008, Chief Minister of West Bengal Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and former Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan had a narrow escape when a landmine exploded within minutes of their convoy passing through Baroa near Salboni in Midnapore district that damaged the pilot vehicle and left several policemen injured. 30% elderly feel isolated, though not unhappy: Survey
New Delhi, January 19 The survey by Agewell Foundation picked out 1,000 persons aged 61 years and more, and researchers said 83.8 per cent of the elderly population felt isolated. Every third elderly person had health problems due to loneliness. The isolation was more pronounced among the urban elderly and 89.8 per cent of them told surveyors that they felt isolated compared to 77.6 per cent of rural population in Delhi and NCR region. However, one positive side of these otherwise disturbing findings is that being isolated might not mean being unhappy. As many as 30.2 per cent of those elderly said though they felt isolated, they were happy with their kind of life. They said they lived on their own terms while 33.2 per cent said they were “somewhat happy” with their lives. Little or no interaction with the family members and other people in society was the major reason for isolation for 44.2 per cent of the elderly while 37.5 per cent blamed it for their living alone or with spouse only. Almost 94 per cent elderly living with their spouses feel lonely. The survey says people were either socially isolated or emotionally isolated, a condition in which old people may have a supportive social network, but they felt isolated nevertheless due to their strained interpersonal relations. The survey makes the point that nuclear families feed their isolation and as many as 71 per cent of the elderly living in these families complained of isolation while only 10.9 per cent of them living in joint families said they suffered from isolation. Among the diseases caused by loneliness, nervousness, anxiety, aggressive nature, substance abuse and eating disorders were most common. “Old persons in large numbers like isolation, but it also leads them to depression and nervousness causing many diseases,” the survey says in its observation. |
