New Delhi, January 21 They are asked to give between Rs 5 and Rs 10 as soon as they enter the shelter. The government has made an arrangement for 500 homeless people in Fatehpuri and 100 in Fountain. This arrangement is free of charge. Both the shelters are run by the MCD. Naresh Kumar, who now prefers to stay in a night shelter at Delhi Gate, said that he had stopped going to Fatehpuri or Fountain as he had to pay Rs 10 for a night. At Delhi Gate, the shelter is run by the NGO, Ashray Adhikar, where all the facilities are provided free. Anis, who belongs to West Bengal, and does a labourer’s job at Khari Baoli, said, “Caretakers asked money for refreshment. They accept whatever is given to them.” Director, Information and Publicity, MCD, Deep Mathur said that this would be brought into the notice of the municipal commissioner and strict action taken against the caretaker if he is caught charging money from the homeless. Delhi welfare minister Mangat Ram Singhal said that all the arrangement of temporary shelters would be made for the homeless to protect them from cold. A survey of homeless people would be conducted by the government and then the MCD would be asked to construct permanent night shelters.

Sun shines through fog
New Delhi, January 21 According to the India Meteorological Department, the chill in Delhi’s air may continue tomorrow, with the minimum temperature likely to settle at 8 and maximum at 16 degree Celsius. The minimum temperature recorded today was 7.2 degree Celsius, one degree below normal, while the day temperature settled at 18.6 degree Celsius. Meanwhile, the heavy fog that captured the Capital sky late last night brought the road, rail and air traffic to a halt. Multiple accidents and long tailbacks were reported on roads last night as drivers struggled with poor visibility. In the morning today, ITO, Pragati Maidan, Khel Gaon, Outer Ring Road and Ashram saw heavy traffic jams during the peak office hours. “The traffic is moving at a very slow pace. One has to keep a margin of at least two hours for reaching anywhere. Small mistakes can lead to dangerous accidents, especially for those driving two-wheelers,” Said Manoj, a commuter. The passengers at Indira Gandhi International Airport also had to face a tough time, as by the time the fog started clearing up, the airspace was shut for the Republic Day preparations between 11.15 am and 12.15 pm. The practice would continue till January 24 and on January 26. More than a hundred flight schedules have been disrupted since the fog set in last night, reducing the runway visibility to less than 50 metres. The situation remained the same for train passengers. More than 70 trains stood cancelled, while close to 65 trains were running behind schedule. |
Delhi boy wins global award in sustainable fashion
New Delhi, January 21 Varun Gambhir, a post-graduate student of the Pearl Academy of Fashion won “Fashioning the Future Award”, given away by the London College of Fashion. Talking to The Tribune, Gambhir, who is a student of fashion merchandising, said the award was a huge recognition and motivation for him, which would add five stars on his career chart. His contribution was a unique fabric made by weaving recycled cotton paper and virgin cotton that would be recyclable in its final form. Virgin cotton is the most natural form of cotton in which cotton fibre is only separated from its seed through a process called ginning. Gambhir, who liked the “Sustainability” theme of the awards, said his experiment was a step towards making fashion sustainable. “It took me total two months to come up with the final product, which was mostly a result of knowing about different fabrics,” he said, adding that cotton is a fabric that gets converted into paper once recycled. To transform this paper into cloth and make it possible to give it a shape, Gambhir mashed this paper with virgin cotton. He said the final product had more than 70 per cent cotton paper and around 30 per cent virgin cotton mixed in it. The resultant eco-friendly fabric, however, had no shine or gloss and hence was not attractive. “I had to put starch on the fabric then and dry it for it to be finally used,” said the boy who was proud of his end product that could even be used to make accessories like bags and bands. To win the award of international repute, Gambhir had to compete with the finalists from several countries, including England, America, North Korea and Australia that have developed fashion industries. The Dean of London College of Fashion, Andrew Huges visited Gambhir in India to present the award earlier this week. As part of the award, the recipient, a resident of Patel Nagar, would be flown to London College of Fashion in April for a workshop with some of the biggest names fashion. However, Gambhir said his job was not over yet. “I am in my last semester in the fashion institute and during this time I am going to research into the commercial viability and properties of the fabric that I have designed,” he said. |
No beef during Games,
warns MCD
New Delhi, January 21 The MCD leaders said that they would protest during the Games if beef was added to the menu. “If any of the players, officers or foreign guests is served beef, BJP councillors and workers will picket and strike against the hotel or the place of serving as well as the offices of the Commonwealth Games Organizing Committees,” said Subhash Arya, the leader of House in MCD. He said that they would lodge FIRs against the officials and hotel management in such a case. “We want to caution both the Delhi and central governments that if the issue led to a law and order problem, the responsibility will have to be borne by them,” he said. Advocating their stand, the leaders said that when Indians do not get vegetarian food in other nations, we should not oblige them by serving beef. “There is no point in obliging foreigners by serving them food items which are banned and related to the sentiments of people,” he said. However, the Commonwealth Games organizing committee has approved the import of beef. “It is playing with the sentiments of people and will not be tolerated ,” said Ramkishan Singhal, chairman, Standing Committee. |

72-yr-old acquitted of raping maid
New Delhi, January 21 The man, Thakur Dass, was charged under sections 376 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) related to rape and criminal intimidation. The court gave Dass the benefit of doubt, as his guilt could not be proved due to contradictory statements made by the victim and the lapses made by the police in the investigation of the case. However, the additional sessions judge, Nivedita Anil Sharma, ordered criminal prosecution of the victim for perjury after she accepted receiving Rs 1 lakh from the accused for a compromise in submissions made by her in the court. The victim made contradictory statements during the proceedings. She first deposed that an unknown person had raped her, but on cross examination said it was Dass who raped her. Hence, the court ordered her prosecution under Section 195 of the CrPc related to offences given in document related to evidence. “As the maid has committed perjury … as admitted by her … I deem this to be a fit case for making a court complaint against her to the court of chief metropolitan magistrate,” the court said. The court also held the police responsible for loopholes during the investigation that lead to the acquittal of the accused. “The investigation conducted in this case is far from satisfactory. Had the investigating officer conducted the investigation properly, this case would have been a very good case for apprehending the actual culprit. But the officer has instead spoilt the case due to her misconduct and negligence,” said the court. The court mentioned that the police also failed to collect the inner clothes of the accused for forensic examination. Holding the prosecution responsible for failing to bring home the charges against the accused, the court directed senior police officials, including the joint commissioner of police and DCP (west), to conduct an inquiry against the woman investigating officer, assistant sub-inspector Urmila Sharma, who on behalf of the accused had allegedly given Rs 1 lakh to the victim to change her testimony. |
