MC wakes from slumber
To free its land from encroachers; take up court cases seriously
Ludhiana, February 6
The Ludhiana Municipal Corporation has finally decided to free its land from the encroachers by taking up the litigations seriously. Sources in the civic body said that Municipal Commissioner AK Sinha today visited various sites in the city that were encroached upon by land grabbers. These included a few sites on the Hambran Road where three properties in the Dairy Complex, worth over Rs 2 crore, had been encroached upon." MTP Hemant Batra accompanied him.

Seeks Rs 200 cr for development
Ludhiana, February 6
Fearing a stay on ambitious projects in the city due to paucity of funds, Mayor Hakam Singh Giaspura and Senior Deputy Mayor Praveen Bansal met Local Bodies Minister Manoranjan Kalia and demanded funds to the tune of Rs 200 crore.

Blind murder case solved; 2 held
Ludhiana, February 6
Outraging the modesty of a friend’s wife proved fatal for an auto-rickshaw driver as the latter was murdered in cold blood. With the arrest of two persons, the police claims to have solved a blind murder case of Raj Kumar, an auto-rickshaw driver, whose body was found from a drain at Guru Nanakpura on January 26.

RIMT Youth Festival Concludes
SCD Govt College bags overall trophy
Students of SCD Government College strike a pose at RIMT, Mandi Gobindgarh Mandi Gobindgarh, February 6
The inter-college national-level youth festival, Rythmz-2010, concluded at the RIMT Institutes of Management and Computer Technology last evening. Punjab police Inspector-General Jagdish Mittal was the chief guest for the prize distribution function. During his address, Mittal called upon the students to participate in such kind of cultural events. The overall running trophy was bagged by SCD Government College, while Guru Nanak Girls College, Ludhiana, was the runners up.

In the absence of psychiatrists at government hospitals and health centres in the city, people are forced to consult general medical practitioners or are resorting to self-medication, leading to physical and mental health disorders.

Youth Cong burns Bal Thackeray’s effigy

Activists of the District Youth Congress (urban) today burnt an effigy of Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray near Mata Rani Chowk. They were lead by organisation president Dimple Rana. Speaking on the occasion, Rana said, “Shiv Sena leaders were feeling insecure due to popularity of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. His visit to Mumbai and travelling on a local train to understand the difficulties of common man is being appreciated by the people. But Thackeray and his family didn’t like it and that is why they were making statement against Rahul, he added.

A creative art contest was organised at Shifaly International School, Rahon road. About 50 students from classes VI to IX participated in the contest. Rajat and Harsh of Class IX won the first prize in the preparation of fruit juice, while Richa, Rajan and Charu got the second prize. In flower making, Nidhi and Rinkle of Class IX got the first prize. Radhika of Class VIII bagged the first prize in “best out of waste” material collection.

The management committee of Anand Isher Senior Secondary School, led by director Kartar Singh felicitated Nayeea Vinayak, NCC cadet, on Friday. Nayeea made the school proud when she along with cadets from other states took part in the Republic Day parade (January 26) in New Delhi. According to Kartar Singh, Nayeea was among three junior wing cadets, who had participated in the parade from Punjab.

One drowns as car falls into canal
Two out of the three occupants of the vehicle, who had a narrow escape after their car fell into a canal near Gurthali pull on FridayDoraha, February 6
An Accent car in which three friends were travelling in an inebriated state along the southern bypass, fell into the canal when the car got out of control at Gurthali pull last night. One among the three friends is reportedly missing, while the other two had a close shave. Harshdeep Kaur Lali (22), son of late Satnam Singh, is believed to have been washed away by the strong currents, Navdeep Garcha, who was driving the car, somehow swam his way out.

An inter-college gurbani competition was held at GHG Khalsa College, Sadhar, to commemorate the 16th death anniversary of founder of the college Bakhtawar Singh. Industry condemns VAT surcharge
Ludhiana, February 6
The Punjab government’s recent announcement to impose 10 per cent cess on VAT from February 5 has come as a blow to the industry that is already reeling under recession. The decision to this effect came a few days after the government increased VAT rates from 4 per cent to 5 per cent. Bureaucrats were giving wrong recommendations to the government to take anti-industry decisions, say industrialists. Being a border state, industry in Punjab is already facing problems due to labour and power shortage.

10 more to donate their bodies

Motivated and inspired by New Hope, NGO, 10 more persons from the city have come forward and decided to donate their bodies after death to DMCH. They expressed their desire that their mortal remains may be used for the benefit of mankind and their limbs including eyes, kidneys and other important parts, which can come in to use may be removed and transplanted to poor and deserving persons

Two lakh to be given polio drops

Members of the Rotary Clubs, Inner Wheel Clubs and Rotaract Clubs of the region are all set to eradicate polio from their respective areas. Polio drops will be administered to children in the 0-5 age group on Sunday.

The life of a minor girl, who was killed in an accident yesterday, was worth Rs 1 lakh, as the father of the victim settled the matter with the driver for the amount and did not lodge the complaint in the police today.

3 women, child held captive; rescued

The city police rescued three women and a child, who were allegedly held captive in a house in Ghora Colony near the Cheema Chowk here today. The police has also booked six people, including two women, in this connection. The accused have been identified as Gurdail, Gurdev, Deepak, Surinder, Seeto and Preeto. The complainants Nirmal, Palo and Sunita, all residents of Daddu Majra near Chandigarh, arrived in the city yesterday.

Farmhouse raided
Mandi Gobindgarh, February 6
A team of Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) raided a farmhouse near Kotla Dadheri village. The farmhouse was allegedly using a kundi connection. The team found an illegal connection in the electricity meter.

Fleecing charge against private bus operators
Doraha, February 6
Commuters here and in nearby areas are bearing a “double hike” in bus fares, one imposed by the government and the other being illegally extracted by private bus operators. Pawan Kumar, who travelled from Doraha to Bija in a PRTC bus on Wednesday, was charged Rs 5, while another private bus, on his return journey, charged Rs 7 for the same distance.

3 swindlers nabbed
Ludhiana, February 6
In a major break through, the city police apprehended three members of an inter-state swindlers gang, who were into illegal weapon trade and were planning to commit robbery in the civil lines area. The trio was nabbed from Rose Garden last evening, while Lalit Kumar, the kingpin of the gang along with his accomplice Kulwinder Singh Bhangu, managed to flee the spot.

Cellular company told to pay Rs 5,000
Ludhiana, February 6
The District Consumer Dispute Redressal Forum’s additional bench headed by PD Goyal has ordered the cellular company, Bharti Airtel Ltd, to restore the mobile connection of an aggrieved consumer immediately.
