Varsity teachers on strike for better conditions
New Delhi, January 28 The Federation of Central University Teachers Association (FEDCUTA) called for the strike. It is demanding better service conditions. The teachers sat on dharnas at several places and would stage a march to the HRD ministry from Mandi House tomorrow. FEDCUTA’s president Aditya Kumar Misra said, “Our strike today was a total success. Teachers were quite responsive and held dharnas at all the colleges. The UGC has treated us badly, forcing us to launch an agitation.” Misra said they held negotiations with the UGC officials and presented their demands on teachers’ service conditions, but the UGC made no effort to bring in amendments despite giving them assurances. He warned that the agitation would continue till suitable amendments were made. According to teachers, service conditions in their current form, if implemented, could have major negative fallout for them. “Take the case of the career advancement scheme in its present form. This would make teachers pay more attention to other activities than concentrating on the quality teaching. The criterion needed for promotions has been so devised that it would lead teachers to do a variety of other tasks and impede quality teaching,” some of them said. The UGC has decided to give weight to teachers who undertake activities such as campus development, institutional governance and consultancy projects. “This would lead to a culture of sycophancy at the university. Teachers would kowtow to the UGC and the administration, instead of paying attention to students or developing an original teaching mechanism,” said Misra. Some of the ‘negative conditions’ in the UGC regulations include exclusion of teaching experience in ad hocism and leave vacancy. FEDCUTA is demanding that ad hoc and temporary service must be counted as part of the service conditions for the career advancement scheme. |
