Maid job racket busted
New Delhi, February 2 According to police, two people, Salim Turkey (35) and Bahuran Kumar (25), have been arrested in this connection. HGS Dhaliwal, DCP (south) said that one Jagdish Narayan, a retired government official had filed a complaint with the Sarojini Nagar police station stating therein that he had received a pamphlet in his newspaper regarding an advertisement about the availability of housemaids through a registered agency, Jay Placement Service, having its office at Lajpat Nagar. The complainant couple, being retired government officials, was in dire need of a maid due to their physical ailment. They approached the agency on the given mobile numbers. They were promised the availability of domestic maid for Rs 10,000 as registration charges and salary of Rs 1,800 per month. The accused offered to provide service at their home. “As per appointment, two of the gang members visited the residence of the complainant and introduced one Nitu to work as maid. They filled up the necessary forms and issued a receipt of Rs 10,000. Since then, the complainant received neither the maid nor the money paid by him and all the details about the placement agency were found to be fake,” said the officer, adding that the gang changed their phone number for more than 50 times in the last two months to avoid detection. “After extensive ground work and surveillance, accused Bahuran Kumar was apprehended on January 30 from near bus stand Devli. He disclosed that he had formed this racket with Salim, Ashok, alias Jay, and Himani and duped more than 100 people in and around NCR through their modus operandi,” Dhaliwal said. |

Surrogate mother refuses to give baby
Ghaziabad, February 2 The couple approached the police to get their baby back from the maid. The police has allowed the maid to keep the baby for the time being. The incident occurred in the Govindpuram area of Ghaziabad. According to the police, Naveen Pandit (35), alias Bobby, a job consultant, was married to Nisha about six years back, but did not have a child. The couple then decided to rope in their maid, Neetu Srivastava, who was staying with them, to bear their child as a surrogate mother. As per their agreement, the couple paid Neetu about Rs 50,000 to lend her womb. But after giving birth to the baby, a boy, Neetu refused to part with the baby and decided to keep the child with herself. An upset Neetu told reporters: “I somehow came to terms with the situation and started living with the couple. When my baby was six days old, they forcefully snatched him from me at the hospital. I was still ready to live with them but the woman started beating me up. Recently, when I asked for my baby to take him along to my mother’s home in Jehangirpuri, Delhi, they refused to hand the baby to me.” Naveen Pandit could not be contacted throughout the day. Kavi Nagar inspector in-charge, Rajesh Chaudhary said: “The two women had approached us with their respective complaints. Neetu told us that she was the mother of the baby so we allowed Neetu to take away her child to her home until Naveen gets a separate accommodation for her at his own house. We are still investigating the matter.”

Fortune-tellers earn a fortune at book fair
New Delhi, February 2 Such is the popularity of the pavilion that it is giving tough competition to the book stalls at the fair. Soothsayers plastered in dramatic make-up and wearing stones of different colours and sizes sit inside the pavilion, as people of all age groups— from those bogged down with family concerns to the young population curious about their love lives—flock to them to seek answers to their queries. Religious music in background and dense smoke of incense sticks lend a mystic aura to the corner which clearly seems to one of the most popular places of the fair. “Most people come out of curiosity. This year, the number of youngsters visiting us has soared. I am handling up to 20 to 30 queries per day from teens, mostly about their relationships,” said Neera Sareen, a tarot card reader. “I and my friends have been waiting for this fair for many weeks. The best of astrologers assemble under one roof and it is a good opportunity for us to interact with them,” said Vidya Jalan, a housewife. Although there may be dispute over astrologers’ claim that their profession is a science, what is clear is that the work is a good business. Tarot reading will cost you Rs 200 and a session with a palmist is worth anywhere between Rs 300 and Rs 500, and they evidently have no dearth of patrons. Then there are expensive and not-so-expensive books. Interestingly, the young crowd, which is believed to be more rational, makes a big chunk of clients at the stall. It is only their queries that make them different from their older counterparts at the stall. Ravi Khanna, a college student, wants to know if he would get the girl of his choice, while Sagarika, a young professional, is asking a tarot reader about the likelihood of her marriage. According to tarot reader Anjusha, everyone— from jealous spouses to teenagers marred by love, parental and peer pressure to adults facing tensions in family, relationships, business and health—are coming to Nakshatra pavilion. With around 100 participants this year, the event promises much more this time with a number of seminars and presentations on topics, including innovations in astrology and impact of vastu on human life. At the pavilion, one can get the business of telling future in all its dimensions, ranging from astrology to palmistry, numerology, tarot, Feng-Shui, reiki, past life regression, gemology and aura reading. |
DTC to ply chartered buses with newspaper, phone
New Delhi, February 2 To begin with, DTC will launch 200 such buses, which will be low floor and air-conditioned, and they will ply from Central Secretariat, Connaught Place, Nehru Place, Delhi Secretariat, Old Secretariat, ITO, Dhaula Kuan, AIIMS and a few other places. They will be driven only during office hours. Travelling in these buses would be costlier but the ticket rates have not been decided yet. Officials said another idea behind running these chartered buses is to encourage people from leaving their individual vehicles and use public transport. That will reduce the traffic. “At present, there are around 40 lakh vehicles in the Capital, resulting in traffic jams during peak hours and in some areas traffic jams are there throughout the day. We hope chartered buses would provide people the comfort of private cars and make them switch over to them,” an official said. The government has taken various steps to ease the traffic and Metro rail. The red airconditioned buses were among such projects. The government has some other projects to attract middle and upper middle class to use public transport, but that would be started after the Commonwealth Games, he said. |
MCD mulls action against 700 illegal phone towers
New Delhi, February 2 According to the report, there are 700 illegal towers in the city. MCD is planning to take action against them. The MCD has also decided to charge monthly rent from the mobile companies for installing towers in the area . According to the report, a mobile tower can be harmful if people are constantly exposed to radiations, as in case of towers erected over houses. “We have studied the findings of international organizations on health on the basis of which the report has been compiled. The towers will be allowed in places like government buildings, offices, markets, shopping complexes, etc. The radiations emitted from mobile towers are not harmful if human beings are exposed to them for a short time,” said Meera Aggrawal, the chairman of the committee formed by the MCD to study the feasibility of mobile towers. The committee report will be presented in the meeting of standing committee next week for an approval. It has also laid guidelines to be followed by mobile companies before they set up their towers. Meera said that there are total 4,517 towers in Delhi of which over 2,500 are legal as they have the required non-objection certificate from the authority concerned. Around 1,600 applications are pending with the MCD seeking an approval for the installation. |

The agitating traders also submitted a memorandum to the President and the Prime Minister, demanding a temporary arrangement for the traders till the construction of at least two more slaughterhouses in Delhi. “The corporation had earlier said that facilities will be introduced at the new state-of-art abattoir at Ghazipur, but despite our repeated efforts nothing has improved so far. The new slaughterhouse is situated just beside a huge landfill site which is posing health hazards,” said Atiq Sajid, president, Delhi Meat Mercantile and Workers Welfare Association. A large number of small shopkeepers, labourers and butchers have become unemployed due to the shifting of the meat traders from the old Idgah slaughterhouse to the new one. |
