Commencing from sharp 9 pm, the party will go on till 1 am and is expected to have 4,000 people from every nook and corner of the city. “We have especially booked three chefs, who are going to prepare scrumptious delicacies, also to get the real taste of Amritsari kulcha, professional cooks are coming all the way from Amritsar,” said Rawat. Snow to elude revellers
Dehradun, December 30 “No rains are expected till January 5,” said Dr Anand Sharma, Director of Meteorological Department, Government of India, based in Dehradun. It will be long winter dry spell and this trend has continued for the past three years with little winter rains in the state. It was only at the fag-end of the monsoon in October that the state of Uttarakhand got above-normal rainfall. However, the entire rainfall occurred in the first week of October and since then, a continued dry spell threatens to stretch to almost three months specially in Dehradun Valley. Even the monsoon rains this year were below normal in Uttarakhand like in the rest of the country. The early October rainfall was very good from the point of view of soil moisture and gave a good start for the Rabi crop, especially after a below normal monsoon season. Dehradun has almost gone dry in November with only 2mm rain against a normal of 11mm. Most other places in Uttarakhand got normal or above normal rainfall in November, but rains eluded Dehradun. There has been a continuous dry spell from November 11 to till date in Garhwal Himalayas and from November 15 in the plains of Kumaon region (except in the hills of Kumaon where there was light rain at a few places on December 15). As temperature in the mid and high hilly regions dips in November and December, moisture gets conserved in the soil. The dry spell has started affecting the low hilly regions, especially where rain-fed agriculture/horticulture is practiced. Wheat crop is in a critical stage and requires irrigation. While in the plains, irrigation facilities are available to tide over the dry spell. But this will add to the cost of production as water has to be drawn from tubewells that consume electricity. Rainfall in October, November and December in Dehradun and Haridwar has been less in the past three years. While there was no rain in November 2007 in Dehradun, there was 10.5mm rain in 2008 with only 2mm in November 2009. It rained just 5.9mm in December 2007 with the December months of 2008 and 2009 going completely dry. |

New Year celebrations: Security beefed up
Dehradun, December 30 These days cops are busy nabbing hooligans, ceasing vehicles and charging penalty at every nook and corner of the city. Their vigilant actions have become the talk of the town since the past two days. Checking the driving license, each documents of the vehicle, vehicle without number plates, driving without helmets and cars with black glasses are ripped off for the security measures. Traffic cops have been deployed at every possible area where criminal activities are likely to occur before and during the New Year bash. With many incidents of accidents, molestation, gang fights and rape in the past, party organisers and hotels have also put some limitations to the merriment and parties. First, no hotel can organise a party without the permission of the police. Second, the entry will be given to the selective pass owners only and the celebration will restricted to the time allowed by the set of law. Inspector (traffic) Virender Singh Rawat said, “The system has six alcohol thermometer for Dehradun while two for Mussoorie. Those found drunk while driving, rash driving and causing havoc on the roads will be taken into the custody. They will not be penalised and left but will be put behind the bars.” ‘The department aims at punishing the goons and muggers who try to violate the system and decorum of the city. Celebrating the gala celebrations of the New Year without any chaos is our prime motto,” he added. With the increasing number of swine flu cases in the city many might refuse to use the alcohol thermometer. But nothing to worry as the H1N1 infection cannot be transmitted with the use of these devices. Chief Medical Officer GC Baunthiyal said, “The H1N1 virus gets spread in the tiny droplets, excluded from nose of an infected person when sneeze or cough. The device will not get contaminated until and unless it gets in contact with nasal secretion or infected person.” |
