Encroachment removal ‘maha’ task ahead of Kumbh
Haridwar, December 19 Traffic jams become a norm on ordinary days and the mela area is getting congested day by day. The mela administration is cracking down on encroachers to get free space for various mela purposes as well as the widening of roads. But, with the drive being initiated quite late, it’s bound to be in limitation and encroachments may become a hindrance when on holy bathes millions of people will throng the city. Now, left with no other option, the mela and district administrations have started an anti-encroachment drive in the mela area. Today, encroachments, particularly
by shopkeepers in the Lal Taura bridge area and Birla Ghat were removed amid heavy deployment of
police personnel. Already informed and seeing the police movement along with JCB machines, most of the people at the Lal Taura bridge, Birla Ghat and traders of Makar Vahini Market started taking away their belongings and goods. Though a stiff resistance was also seen with dwellers trying every bit to stop the rampaging JCB machines, but to no avail. Led by city Magistrate Archana Grehawar and CO Pankaj Bhatt, the whole drive was carried as per plan. Late evening, the whole area had a deserted look and those people whose illegal structures were removed were seen gathering their things. Last week, only a major anti-encroachment drive was successfully completed in the Bairagi camp area where more than 2,000 illegal setups were removed. The administration and police first tried to apprise residents of the need and urgency of the drive citing the approaching Maha Kumbh. This proved quite useful as a majority of illegal dwellers shifted away from the camp area and also destroyed their
illegal structures. Carried under SDM Mela Harvir Singh, the drive saw some stiff resistance from the encroachers and a youth even tried to cut his neck while women sat before the JCB machines and bulldozers. But, with the administration determined to tackle all sorts of resistance, in two days the whole area was almost made encroachment free with the help the
mela police. Though in the drive all temporary constructions were demolished, some permanent structures were left untouched, pointing to the approach of their owners. But, with not much time left for the commencement of the mega fair, it’s obvious that anti-encroachment drives will be carried out only in the mela area, where it’s imperative. Urban Development Minister Madan Kaushik admits that to have a encroachment-free Haridwar one needs a master plan and full cooperation from all quarters. It is an uphill task and the issue can be broadly dwelt with after the completion of the Maha Kumbh only, he added. Bairagi camp’s 134 hectares comes under the Irrigation Department of which about 40 hectares was illegally occupied. The Bairagi camp has been in the limelight for illegal colonies for the past few years. This January a major anti-encroachment drive was initiated there which caused an upheaval in the administration and state politics. The police forcefully threw out occupants of illegal dwellings and there was much blood bath on the scene. Such was the situation that the drive had to be halted on the directions of Kaushik, who is local legislator. With the situation getting tense, Garhwal Commissioner Uma Kant Pawar visited the site and met the dwellers. With general assembly elections around the corner then, political parties had tried to gain political mileage out of this drive. What is being done today, would have been done 11 months earlier. Now, with barely weeks left for the commencement of the mega fair, the
anti-encroachment drive seems to be done in a hurriedly manner. Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition Harak Singh Rawat has come in support of small traders and vendors. Recently in city, Rawat had broken the indefinite fast of members of the Small Vendors Association against their removal from the mela area. Talking to The Tribune, Rawat said he had apprised Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank of the situation and had also spoken to mela officials for providing space to these vendors/hawkers at major parking spots and also at certain spots in the mela area. |
Activists protest tree felling at Prez Bodyguard’s Estate
Dehradun, December 19 They shouted slogans against the permission given by the Dehradun District Forest Officer to chop down 384 trees in the campus. As many as 84 trees were felled on yesterday. The activists resented the felling of mature fruit-bearing trees inside the campus. They have
also alleged that the authorities denied them entry into the premises. Of the 384 trees for which felling has been permitted, 300 are of eucalyptus and 84 are of other varieties. The reason for their chopping was the proximity to the walls of the estate. Dr Nitin Pandey, activist of the Citizens for Green Doon complained, “On November 22, we found a tun tree, which is a protected species, being cut down at the premises and a protest ensued that forced the authorities to stop tree felling.” “If DFO Haldwani along with Tata can re-plant 60 per cent trees, why can’t our state take such initiatives,” he added. Among those present at the protest were Dr Kuldeep Dutta, Krishna Sharma, a noted social worker, Ruchi Singh
Rao, Anjali Bhatia, Jayanti Sharma, Laksha Mehta, Renuka Jalota and Himanshu Arora. |

IIT-R to train staff of sewage treatment plants
Roorkee, December 19 It would be a five-day course on “Operation and maintenance” for the staff of functional plants of five states of Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand, UP and Delhi. The course will be held from February 1 to 5. “At its first level, the course is meant for junior engineers deputed at these plants,” said Absar Ahmed Kazmi, faculty member at the IIT-Roorkee and designer of the course. Another five-day training course, namely Intermediate Course, specially designed for mid-level engineers (like assistant engineers or executive engineers) will start from February 22, added Kazmi. “The main objective of the course is to provide basic knowledge and essential skills in daily operation and maintenance of the plants. It is also aimed at enhancing efficacy of these plants,” said Kazmi. He added that our country does not have adequate number of sewage treatment plants to counter the menace of river water pollution, which has been increasing with every passing day. Even the existing plants are not being used fully due to a lack of skilful handling, opined Kazmi. “It has been seen that after carrying out skill-development programmes for the staff of these plants in the world, a decrease of 10-20 per cent in pollution-level in rivers was noticed,” said Kazmi. To ease pollution load in the rivers, three things, regular supply of electricity to plants; a proper funding from the state and incorporation of the latest technology and regular training course for skills building of workers, are very important, he added. |
Three-day Explotech begins
Dehradun, December 19 Today is the anniversary of foundation day of the Keshav Dev Malviya Institute of Petroleum Exploration (KDMIPE) and the first Explotech has been organised along with the Keshav Dev Malviya memorial lecture. Scientists from different work centres of the ONGC and representatives from technology providers are participating in the three-day event. Remembering KD Malaviya for his contribution to the oil and gas industry, RS Pandey said that pioneering work was done by the ONGC since Malviya’s involvement with the oil industry. “Dependence on oil and gas is going to be greater in a growing economy because its consumption will grow on a long-term basis,” he said. In the Indian
scenario, he attributed stagnating or declining production of the ONGC to ageing oil wells. He pointed out that production from existing fields will reduce to half by 2030. He called for more investments in the oil and gas sector and advised to go in for wider and more difficult terrains. He urged the ONGC not to look at the world average but at the world’s best rate that stood at almost 90 per cent in Gulf countries and to achieve the highest possible rate of recovery as fast as possible. Later, he inaugurated the Explotech exhibition where the ONGC and technology providing companies have put up their stalls. ONGC Director (Exploration) DK Pande said that the close interaction among the scientists and technology providers during Explotech would provide a platform to enhance exploration efficiency. He said that the KDMIPE was playing a pivotal role in carrying out exploration activities and nurturing scientists. He added that the ONGC has taken a lead in entering into shale gas, underground coal gasification, CBM and gas hydrates. PK Bhowmick delivered the welcome address at the inaugural ceremony. In his address, he shared some achievements of his institute towards making KDMIPE as a benchmark among the energy-related R&D institutes of the world.
