IMA adds 536 more officers to Army
Dehradun, December 12
Out of total 536 gentlemen cadets, who passed out from the portals of the historic Chetwode Hall of the academy, 18 were are from friendly foreign countries, including six from Bhutan, four from Sri Lanka, two each from Maldives, Kazakhstan and Nepal and one each from Tajikistan and Mauritius. From the newly commissioned officers, 365 were from 125th regular course, 48 from 108th technical graduate course, 14 from 17th university entry scheme course, 18 from 23rd special commission officer course and 73 are from 14th technical entry scheme course.
The Autumn Term 2009 Passing-out Parade (POP) was reviewed by Gen Chhatra Man Singh Gurung, chief of the Nepal army, who himself graduated from the IMA 36 years ago. In his address, General Gurung said: “The POP here has reminded me of my days as a cadet at the IMA 36 years ago”. “It is an honour to be here toady and this is a clear reflection of good relations between the two armies, two countries and the people of the two countries,” added Gurung. Gurung further said: “Already 120 Nepali officers were commissioned from this prestigious institution and are holding high ranks in the Nepal army”. Showering praises on the IMA, General Gurung said: “This is one of the best academy of the world and the training I have taken here has been my constant guide in my past and continue to guide me in present as well”. “You must have understood the meaning of ‘Veerta and Vivek’, the symbol of the IMA, and you should practise these values in your lives. As a leader ahead in the Army you would have to make wise decisions and these values would help,” the Nepal army chief added while calling upon the gentlemen cadets. Earlier, the impressive POP ceremony began at sharp 8:45 with the sounding of the bugle signalling the company majors to take their position on the drill square. This was followed by an advance call signal for parade with another sound of bugle. Just as the signal was given, the proud gentleman cadets singing the IMA song marched in to the drill square elegantly. They gave salute to the three official of the IMA, including Brig Lalit Kumar Rampal. As the GCs settled again after the salute, General Gurung entered from the main gate on the Patiala coach. He reviewed the parade with the IMA commandant, Lieut-Gen RS Sujlana. Later, the gentlemen cadets gave salute to the reviewing officers at an impressive and immaculate march past on the tunes of “Col Bogey” and “Sare Jahan Se Achacha Hindustan Hamara”. Later, all cadets marched in files into the Chetwode Hall crossing the Antim Pagh while helicopters showered petals on them to welcome them as new officers. Meanwhile, after the POP, the proud parents of new officers pinned up the stars on their wards’ shoulders at the pipping ceremony. The Adjutant of the IMA, Major Ravati Bhandri, administered the oath to the officers. As the function came to an end, the newly commissioned officers went gaga over their achievement. They tossed their caps in the air together in joy and joined their major as well in the retreat. |

Dehradun, December 12 He was awarded, along with other winners, by the reviewing officer, Gen Chhatra Man Singh Gurung, chief of the Nepal army, on the parade ground of the academy. The Sword of Honour is awarded to the best all-round gentleman cadet from the regular course while the Gold Medal is bestowed upon the gentleman cadet who stands first in the order of merit. “I did nothing special. I just believed in hard work and left everything to the Almighty. I never gave up and tried to give utmost in every field during the training,” says Shukla, an alumnus of National Defence Academy (NDA). On his achievement, the excellent runner said: “Being an ex-NDA, I had upper hand as I wasn’t new to the Army training and schedule. I just had to put in my hard work”. A student of the Chinese language and six-star silver torch holder, Shukla comes from a village called Barola at Laskhimpur (UP). His father is a farmer and mother a housewife. “I always wanted my son to join the IIT or the military and he chose the latter. What could be better than this!” says a proud father, Badasha Shukla. After completing his primary at a school in his native village, which is a rural area, his family chose to make him study in Don Bosco School, Lucknow. “We wanted that he studies at a better place and becomes an officer in future and today it has come true,” tells his mother Devki Shukla. Meanwhile, the silver medal was awarded to Harshwardhan Pathak for standing second in the order of merit. Pathak, also an alumnus of NDA, hails from Bhavnagar in Gujarat. He lost his father during his NDA training in 2006 in a road accident. His mother is a homemaker and lives in Delhi with his elder brother who works there as a manager with McDonald’s. “This was the result of my sheer hard work and I am happy to have trained from such an excellent institute and looking forward to join the Army,” said a confident Pathak, who was also bestowed with Commandants Cup for standing overall first in YO Cap recently during the award ceremony. Rohit Pandita, who stood third in the order of merit, was awarded bronze medal. In the technical graduate course Iqbaljit Singh and Rakesh Singh were awarded silver medals for standing first in the order of merit. The Chief of Army Staff (COAS) honour was bagged by the Sinhgarh company. |
J&K kids have good time in U’khand
Haridwar, December 12 These children have come from the far-flung hilly rural areas of Jammu and Kashmir and are on a visit to Uttarakhand on an educational-cum-motivational tour. They have visited Dehradun and are in Haridwar. They are planning to go to Mussoorie and Lansdowne in Pauri Garhwal district. The aim of the tour is to show the culture, tradition and landscape of other parts of the country and to see the terror-free side of life. “The students are quite excited. It is a learning experience for them, most of whom have never been outside their state. The feeling of being here, seeing the local life and culture has significantly changed their outlook,” opined Shukhwinder Kaur, a teacher accompanying the group. The students also seem to be enjoying every moment. Sareen, a class IX student, said that she didn’t know that her nation was so rich in culture and nature. Ishrat and Shaza Jan too echoed Sareen’s opinion and said that the love and warmth shown by the people of other states and students of different schools that they toured was overwhelming. Students were shown the BHEL unit by DK Mody, MD, Human Resource, Vimal Kumar, ML Gupta and other BHEL officials. Later, a special welcome programme was organised at DPS Ranipur wherein students performed songs and skits. An interactive session was held between the DPS and Jammu and Kashmir students. KS Bhandari, the BHEL executive who was involved with the students during their Haridwar sojourn, said that more such tours and exchange programmes need to be conducted ranging from education, excursion, sports to cultural programmes so that students from different states get to know each other better. DPS Principal KS Pandey hoped that the visiting students would take back sweet memories from their sojourn. The students delegation was accompanied by 36 Rashtriya Rifles Major SS Rawal, his wife, three teachers Adil, Iqbal, Shukhwinder and Rajesh, a medical attendant. |

Dehradun, December 12 Around 300 students from 36 schools participated and showcased their skills on three main topics, pollution, environment, Indian festivals and new year’s cards. The programme was coordinated under the supervision of CK Gupta and Dev Pandey. Along with school principal, present at the function were prominent members of the organisation. |
MKP students get career guidance
Dehradun, December 12 “Career counselling seminars are held every year in the college premises in which various professional institutes of the capital take part,” said Dr Chetna Pokhriyal, head of the English department at MKP College. Principal Dr Indu Singh inaugurated the seminar. In her speech, she motivated the students to participate in such seminars for a bright future. Nearly 150 students from all three streams - arts, science and commerce - participated. Powerpoint presentations were made by heads of different institutes. The seminar was attended by Dr Renu Saxena, Dr Neelam Ghildiyal, Dr Tulika Chandra and Abha Bansal. The overwhelming response of the students marked the success of the programme. The career counselling cell of the college was established in 2006 under Principal Dr Indu Singh. |

Haridwar, December 12 Also the skits and a fairy tale presentation were performed with a perfection, along with regular solo and group dances on classical, pop, Bollywood and western music. “We prepared very hard for our school function and I enjoyed a lot,” said Neha, a participant at the annual function. Earlier, inaugurating the function with lighting of lamp, St Mary’s Academy, Saharanpur, principal Father George KV stressed on providing younger children the best of facilities and opportunities so that their personality develops overall. Dehradun, December 12 More than 150 students participated in the contest. The question paper comprised objective-type questions from arithmetic, English, history, geography and general science. The objective of the contest was to prepare students for various competitive examinations that a student would be appearing for in future. “The results will be declared within three days and the prizes will be given at the annual function of the college,” said Dr MS Gosai from the History Department. |
Sai Club scrape past Doon Giants
Dehradun, December 12 They got out after scoring 13 runs each. First-down batsman Prithvi scored 16 runs in 18 balls. It was Himanshu who accelerated Aishwarya supported him well on the other end to score 23 runs in 20 balls. After Aishwarya and Himanshu returned to the pavilion none of the batsmen stayed on crease for a long and the whole team was out for 113 runs. For Sai Club, Abhishek was the highest wicket taker. He claimed three wickets in his six-over spell. Dharam Singh, Praveen and Amar took two wickets each. Chasing the victory target of 114 runs, Sai Club began on a strong note as its opener Praveen scored a magnificent 51 runs in 36 balls, displaying a range of shorts. Siddharth supported him well on the other end to score 22 runs. Middle order batsman Daram Singh scored 22 runs in 32 balls to further accelerate the run rate. Doon Giants team bowlers made a strong comeback to take two quick wickets. In the end it was a narrow one wicket win for Sai Club. For Doon Giant Pradeep took four wickets, Harendra took three. |

Dehradun, December 12 Rao Sporting scored a modest 123 runs in their allotted 20 overs. They lost their first two wickets early. Sharad contributed 30 runs. Middle-order batsman Gaurav supported Kiran well on the other end and went on to score 33 runs. After Gaurav, it was Anil who took up the challenge and scored 22 runs. For Graphic Era, it was Shushant and Achal who ripped through the top order of the opposition. They claimed three wickets each while Siddhart took two wickets. Chasing the target of 124 runs, it was a superb batting display by the Graphic Era team as they won the match by 10 wickets. Opening batsman Shushant was the leading scorer with 53 runs off 78 balls. HIV: Society holds street plays to generate awareness
Haridwar, December 12 These social activists are accompanying Red Ribbon Express bus service being operated by Uttarakhand Aids Control Society and will be in the Haridwar district for more than a month to aware people about the disease and the methodology to avoid getting inflicted from the virus. Generating mass awareness about AIDS virus and also trying to get rid off the social stigma attached with the disease is the main purpose of the Red Ribbon Express. The Express so far has treaded major areas in Haridwar city and Roorkee and is taking help of government hospitals, Anganbadi centres, ASHA workers, students and local NGOs to make sure that their effort of spreading awareness reaches to the masses. Yogendra Poli, founder of the group, emphasised that social awareness is the need of the hour as ignorance is the main cause of its spread. The activists via street plays also try to inform people that apart from sexual transmission the virus also spread through infected syringes, blood transmission and also affects newly born if mother is HIV positive. Also the patients of tuberculosis are most prone of getting afflicted with the AIDS virus. Apart from staging street plays, discussion forums the activists are distributing free of cost condoms to the people particularly at bus stands and slums. “This is a great initiative on the part of the society and activists. Their presentations are quite impressing and people themselves are coming forward with queries to know about the virus and ways to prevent themselves from it,” said Dr Kamini Gupta. |
Skating c’ship gets rolling
Dehradun, December 12 ‘Dance Vandana on Skates’ was presented by national-level skater Priyakshi Thapa of Doon Blossoms School. Selectors will choose a state-level team for the upcoming National Championship that is being organised at Visakhapatnam and Maharashtra. The panel of judges includes Abhimanu Patwal, treasurer of the Ice Skating Association, Uttarakhand, Amit Choudhry, international skater, Karan Chauhan and Roopchand. Dehradun, December 12 The Haridwar team piled up 80 runs off 38 overs. Babu Ram was the highest scorer for the team with 80 runs off 79 balls, hitting four fours and two sixes.
Middle order batsman Sachin Kashyap made a useful contribution of 24 runs and Varnik scored

Dehradun, December 12 In the first match, Haridwar defeated Bageshwar in straight sets 25-8, 25-13. In the second game, Dehradun dominated the proceedings against the Tehri team. Dehradun won the first set 25-17. The second set was no different as Dehradun won 25-13. In the third match, Udham Singh Nagar defeated Nainital in three sets. The Sports College team defeated Almora 25-18,
25-9 while Dehradun team outplayed Nainital 25-16, 25-14. In the last league match of the day, Udham Singh Nagar defeated Tehri 25-18, 25-17 and 15-13. |
