Maha Kumbh
Travel in style in luxury city buses
Dehradun, Haridwar get 60 buses each while Nainital has been allotted 15

Haridwar, December 5
Anyone who has visited the world renowned pilgrim city of Haridwar will know the state of public transport in the city well and the inconvenience local persons, pilgrims and tourists have to face while commuting in the city.
The luxury city bus fleet at Haridwar depot

But come next year, luxury city buses will be plying on city roads meeting the long-term demand of residents and solving the immense problem residents had commuting.

With Maha Kumbh starting in January next year, the induction of 60 city buses in the Haridwar bus depot fleet will play a pivotal role during the four-month mega fair when approximately five crore persons are expected to throng the city.

These 60 buses for the duration of the Maha Kumbh will be aided by another 60 similar buses which are meant for the Dehradun bus depot. These 120 buses will be plying intra-city and inter-city.

During the Maha Kumbh, due to heavy rush and traffic in Haridwar, especially in the mela area, traffic coming from Delhi, Dehradun, Rishikesh and Muzaffarnagar side will be stopped several km away from Haridwar city.

Specially during the holy baths, this will be the norm and from the stoppage points, people will have to go to the mela area on foot.

Earlier, this used to cause problems galore for the people as they had no alternative to reach the city, but now, these buses will, for the first time, carry passengers from these stoppage points.

The routes for these city buses are being given final touches. City buses will be ferrying passengers between temporary bus stations like Gauri Shankar Deep, Raiwala, Motichur, Bahadrabad and Chandighat.

Hari Mohan Dabral, Assistant Regional Manager, Haridwar Bus Depot, told The Tribune that the fleet of buses would lessen the load on the depot’s long-route buses and ease traffic pressure not only during Kumbh, but also after the completion of the fair.

Notably, these city buses have been allotted by the Central government under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) and 60 each have been allotted to Dehradun and Haridwar while 15 have been slotted for Nainital.

These buses are equipped with the latest facilities, specially designed and made for inter-city purposes.

Keeping in mind the huge amount of traffic and the less width of roads in Dehradun and Haridwar, two types of buses - one longer and the other smaller - had been specially allotted.

Several facilities are available in these buses in line with the green and red lower-floored buses currently being run in New Delhi.

Coloured red, these buses have display facility on three sides. One is in the front that will display the route and timing for commuters. The second one is on the right side and the third one is inside the bus just above the bonnet. It will display information about the next stop, time and other related information.

Besides pressure doors that can be opened and closed by the driver alone and seat belts for driver and conductor, an air-eliminator switch has been fixed outside so that in an emergency, the door can be opened from the outside by pushing a knob.

Shalendra Bharadwaj, an electric fitter at the depot, said that these buses were specially designed keeping in mind present-day requirements and would be an unique experience for passengers because of the facilities provided in these buses.

At present, these buses have been put up at the roadways workshop at Indira Industrial Area and procedures of registration and refitting of accessories were being done. It is being expected that these buses will start plying in Haridwar from the New Year.

Meanwhile, seeing these buses stationed at the workshop, curious onlookers are coming to see these buses that are quite different from the usual roadways buses that are operated from the depot.

Workshop employees said that city residents were quite enthusiastic about these buses. Many have expressed their desire to sit inside the bus to get a glimpse and feel of these luxury city buses.

“This was a long-term demand of the people of Haridwar and, finally, local people as well as tourists will be able to commute easily in these buses. They will be freed from problematic three-wheelers and auto-rickshaws which charge exorbitant rates.

“These modes of transport are overfilled which make these prone to accidents,” opined Sanjay Sharma, Leader of Opposition in the Haridwar Municipal Committee.

So get ready to experience luxury city buses in Uttarakhand that will make private city buses currently being operated in Dehradun city look pale!

Alva attends Navy Week celebrations
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, December 5
The Naval Hydrographic office celebrated the Navy Week-2009 here today. State Governor Margaret Alva and Vice Admiral VR Rao attended the function held to mark the occasion.

The Hydrographic Department of the Indian Navy was established in the 17th century from the charting activities of the British East India Company.

Two hydrographers John and Samuel Thorton of the East India Company found the sailing directions for the Indian Ocean in 1703. For the next two years both hydrographers went on the expedition heading forward from the Red Sea to the Persian Gulf, the Arabian Sea and across the Indian Ocean to the China Sea.

But while terminating the East India Company, the Indian Marine Survey Department was established at Kolkata in 1874, which also became a part of the Royal Indian in 1882.

The department continued working under the Surveyor-in-Charge of the Marine Survey of India from Mumbai, post independence, which was later shifted to Dehradun on June 1, 1954. The department was then renamed as the Naval Hydrographic Office and the Surveyor-in-Charge of the Marine Survey of India was then re-designated as Chief Hydrographer of the Navy, which was later changed to Chief Hydrographer of the government in 1964.

On the basis of their national stature and pivotal role, Naval Hydrographic office was again re-established as National Hydrographic Office.

The National Hydrographic Office is situated in the lush green location of Rajpur Road, Dehradun, adjacent to the Survey of India is the only northern support to the nation and mercantile marine towards safe sailing. This outstation directorate of the Naval Headquarters, the IHQ MoD (Navy), Delhi, is the professional headquarters of the Naval Hydrographic department. Chief Hydrographer to the government of India, Vice Adm BR Rao, AVSM, NM, VSM heads the department.

The key objective of the department is to produce charts, maritime publications on behalf of the Chief Hydrographer for charting of the Indian waters and its adjacent areas.

Additionally, the department also assists the Chief Hydrographer towards exercising professional control of the Indian Naval Survey Ships and establishments with professional inputs towards the hydrographic aspects of the Indian Naval activities as directed or required by the IHQ MoD (Navy).

The department office is well equipped with the latest cartographic, printing technology and IT tools. The charts are for Indian Navy as well as for public domain. They are also forefront of hydrographic capabilities with eight fully equipped and modern hydrographic survey ships and have been engaged in participating in the Indian diplomatic initiative of ‘Bridges of Friendship’.

The products and services of the hydrographic department have reached beyond the traditional scope of marine transport. Path breaking advances in ocean technologies have rendered industrialisation and exploitation of the coastal and offshore zone, which has also turn into environmental concern for these zones.

The national hydrographic office under its principles of ‘Sarwangin Vikassonmukham’ or towards wholesome development are committed to oblige by the country’s safety surveys under international conventions and national regulations and quality value added products or services.

Health Dept mulls 15-day rotation for doctors
Neena Sharma
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, December 5
Faced with the problem of shortage of manpower and medical officers reluctance to take up long Kumbh duties, the state Health Department is depending on contractual health staff and new recruitments to overcome the problem.

To make matters worse, three doctors transferred from the Doon Hospital have shown disinterest in joining duties at Haridwar.

Similarly, it is believed that even medical officers from other districts, who have been asked to take up Kumbh duties from December 15, have expressed unwillingness, citing family obligations as the major reason.

In all, there is an expected demand for 264 doctors (general), 50 specialists, 20 sisters and 65 staff nurses and 165 pharmacists as envisaged by the mela adhikari (health). These doctors and staff members would be providing round-the-clock medical facilities during the Kumbh Mela, for which six base hospitals are being equipped well in advance to cater to the influx of pilgrims.

But the health department is facing an uphill task acquiring required manpower. To get over the problem, it is contemplating roster arrangement, whereby the medical officers would be put on duty for 15 days at the Kumbh Mela.

The government is also relying on new recruitments for which interviews are currently underway for female medical officers. The interviews are currently underway for 178 posts. In January, interviews would also be held for male doctors.

Besides, so acute is the shortage of medical officers that their deployment elsewhere is bound to affect the services of hospitals and community health centres as the government would be hard pressed to come with replacement, especially of specialists and would only be asking remaining others to take up additional duties.

Akash Ghai
Tribune News Service

Roorkee, December 5
A local outfit, Brahman-Baniya Aarakshan Morcha, sought an increase in the number of post-graduate seats in the medical college at Jolly Grant Medical College, Dehradun.

National secretary of the morcha Surender Mittal wrote letters to President Pratibha Singh Patil, Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and Health and Family Welfare Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad demanding increase in the post-graduate seats (MD/MS) in the medical college to combat the shortage of specialised doctors in the state.

“At the moment, the medical college has very few seats, which should be increased soon to enable more medical students do their post graduation here,” said Malik.

With this, the problem of shortage of specialised doctors in the state will also be overcome, he added.

In private colleges, studying the PG courses is a very costly affair. So, the seats in the college need to be increased by the government, said Malik. Notably, a major imbalance exists between the available and needed medical services in the state till date.

According to the health authorities here, there is a dearth of 1,000 doctors in the state, which accounted for around 50 per cent of the total requirement.

Against around 2,100 posts of medical officer in the state, about 1,000 have remained vacant since the formation of the state.

Doon Star Club may get MNC sponsor
Vishal Thakur
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, December 5
It could be a golden opportunity for the Doon Star Club to win a big sponsorship opportunity that has fallen in its way. The club is said to have caught the attention of a multinational company that is interested in sponsoring it.

The fact that Dehradun football has always longed for a sponsorship from old times is well known to all. Some good clubs, that had performed exceptionally well, were forced to close down in the absence of financial support.

If the Doon Star Club earned this sponsorship, it would be the first time in the history of the Dehradun football that a club would get sponsored. The development took place during the District Football League where a representative of a multinational company had witnessed the Doon Star team performance against the Uttarakhand Police team in the super league stage.

It was an excellent performance by the Uttarakhand team to hold the mighty Uttarakhand Police for a 0-0 draw.

Gaurav who is working as a coordinator of the club said, “It can be a big opportunity for us and if the deal strikes, they stand a good chance that other clubs of Dehradun may also get such a opportunity from some other sponsor.”

Right now the proposal has been forwarded and will be taken up at the meeting in Bengaluru. The Doon Star Club is one of the good clubs of the city. It has experienced highs and lows of time. The club began in 1975, but due to financial constants it was closed soon after.

However, football lovers revived it again. After running smoothly for a considerable period, the club closed down again for years recently before being revived yet again.
