DU teachers to strike against biometric attendance system
New Delhi, December 5 The machine would give an account of the time spent by a faculty member in the department and the college. The attendance machines have already been installed on a trial basis in the administrative block, vice-chancellor’s office and registrar’s office. While the vice-chancellor believes that biometric attendance system would make the university more transparent, the faculty is warming up to resist the move. The teachers have decided to hold a university-wide strike on Monday. “The vice-chancellor has listed the agenda without any discussion at any university forum,” said Aditya Narayan Misra, president, DU Teachers’ Association (DUTA) and added that the attempt to “bulldoze” such a thing on teachers would not be tolerated. According to sources, the University Grants Commission (UGC) is also formulating a regulation on the service conditions for teachers which would keep a track of the overall work done by teachers. However, the proposal to install attendance machines would need the approval of the university’s highest decision making body — Executive Council (EC) before it is implemented. The proposal would be put before the EC meeting which is scheduled for Monday. |
Pulse polio campaign today
New Delhi, December 5 She said Delhi has to succeed in its endeavour of eradicating the polio virus from the National Capital Territory as it has been a pioneer in this field. It was in 1994 that the pulse polio immunisation programme was initiated in the city and as a part of this drive, house-to-house “search immunisation” was taken up in 1999, she added. Tomorrow, there would be 8,200 polio booths across the city where people could take their children from 0-5 years of age for vaccination. And at various stalls stationed at railway stations, ISBTs, public places, including major temples, Metro stations, Millennium Park, zoo etc., there would be around 35,000 workers and employees of the health department to ensure that more families are covered. Besides, said a health official, 9,200 teams would make rounds to look for any leftover cases of children in slums and JJ clusters. |
Airport bomb scare turns out to be security drill
New Delhi, December 5 The bomb scare at Delhi’s IGI Airport today was staged to check the preparedness of security agencies, an official said. The drill on board Jet Airways’ Delhi-Dhaka flight was conducted at the behest of the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security. Around 1 pm, a man claiming to be outlawed ULFA leader Paresh Barua called up Jet Airways threatening to blow up the plane, which had 106 passengers on board. “Passengers were asked to disembark from the flight and it was checked,” said Rohit Katiyar, chief spokesman for the CISF. “We were initially not aware whether it was a mock drill. We had deployed the emergency procedures as per the book,” said Katiyar. “The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security later informed us that it was a mock drill. Such drills are routine and are done to ensure and enhance security measures at the airport and to deal with worse situations if they occur,” he added. The winter session is only for six days. Counting the problems of his constituency, he said that during elections, the Congress claimed that it had plans to bring Metro lines to Okhla, but the issue is not listed in the Master Plan. “I will raise this matter in the Assembly,” he said. When asked how many questions he had submitted before the Assembly, he said that he had entered the House for the first time. It would take time to learn the working of the state government. “When I was elected to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, it had taken me six months to understand the functioning of the civic body,” he said. He added, “However, I will not hesitate in raising the development issues of my constituency. The major demands of the electorate in the area are potable water, power, sanitation, transport, etc.” Pradymna Kumar said that though he had entered the Assembly for the first time, he was not new to politics and had been associated with the BJP for long. Develop areas, Meira tells MLAs
New Delhi, December 5 Inaugurating the orientation programme for the members of the Delhi Legislative Assembly, Meira Kumar said that Delhi was a “small India” where people of various states, religions and castes reside. The Delhi Legislative Assembly had its own history. It was started in 1912 and at that time, the Assembly House was known as Council Chamber. She said as people’s representatives, it’s the duty of the Assembly members to strengthen the traditions of democracy and work for people of their areas. To be an MLA was a privilege but this could be maintained by working for the people. The members should fulfill assurances they had made to the residents of their constituencies during the Assembly elections. Meira Kumar said that an MLA could be successful provided he was active and attended all the proceedings of the House meetings. This is a must for an MLA to have knowledge of rules and proceedings of the Assembly. Thanking the Lok Sabha Speaker for sparing time to inaugurate the orientation programme, the Chief Minister said that the Delhi Assembly was a unique House where MLAs were sincere and they seldom came to the well of the House. She added Delhi is a small state in comparison to other states and it has less number of issues for discussion. So, it has limited number of sittings. |

Auto anarchy rules at rly station
New Delhi, December 5 Tugging at your luggage, making over-friendly gestures and in their efforts to get “savaaris,” auto and taxi drivers try their best to scare passengers by telling them about the “high” rates at the prepaid counter. “Most auto drivers challenge passengers to compare their charges against the prepaid rates. Unaware, many settle for whatever the auto driver is charging, without properly enquiring the rates at the prepaid counter. This encourages these auto drivers even more,” said one of the Delhi traffic police officers on duty outside the station. Radhika, a Delhiite who had come to the station to receive her relatives, feels that it’s mostly the outstation and foreign crowd who gets cheated. She said, “If you do not know the exact fare, you can assume that at the railway station, the fare told to you by the auto and taxi drivers will be at least double the actual fare, especially if you have a tourist look. When you come out of a railway station or airport, expect to be quoted an outrageous price, sometimes ten times the normal price. There is a class of English-speaking taxi drivers who rush to greet tourists with the hope of making more money.” “However, anyone who comes up for help to us is always advised to opt for prepaid rides, as it helps to avert over-charging, refusal, misbehavior or harassment by taxi and auto drivers. Duly signed receipt indicating the taxi/auto number, destination, service charge, baggage charge if any and the fare is given to the passenger, and hence this ensures some degree of certainty and safety,” said a clerk at the prepaid booth on the Paharganj side. “However this system is purely optional and that is where the problem lies. There are two prepaid booths at the railway station—Ajmeri Gate side and Paharganj side. But at times, to avoid extra effort and with a hope to bargain below the fixed prices at prepaid booths, people opt to hire autos and taxis directly,” the clerk added. “Most drivers refuse to use meters on the pretext that it is out of order. Sometimes when you go by meter, the driver will take a longer route. This happened with me a couple of times so now I carry a city map,” said Kashyap Sahai from Nagpur, who landed at the station for a weekend business tour. |

Already Noida ranks among the five most polluted cities of Uttar Pradesh. If timely steps are not taken, it will soon become difficult to breathe in open air. In Uttar Pradesh, the first Pollution Day was observed in 1984 after which the level of pollution has constantly been on the rise. Even Pollution Control Board’s role has become confined to periodically collecting data only. No concrete policy appears to have been framed to reduce the pollution level.
