‘Patients need love and care, not boycott’ Haridwar, December 1 A massive awareness rally was organised by the District Health Department in association with various non-government agencies, social organisations and various schools. The rally took off from Devpura with hundreds of participants holding placards, banners and posters displaying the causes of the disease and the ways to prevent its spread.
Amid chanting of slogans, the rally covered major roads of the city and culminated at the Mela Hospital where Health Department officials, doctors, experts and people related with the AIDS Prevention Mission spoke on the subject and tried to generate awareness among people on the disease.
Deputy Chief Medical Officer Naveen Chandra Pant stressed on the need of coming out of taboo related to this disease. “The time is to make AIDS affected patients be a part of society and they need love and care and not boycott,” said Pant.
The rally also saw participation of Rotary Club members, anganbari workers from Dadoobagh, ASHA health activists and medical students of Rishikul Ayurvedic Medical College.
“We, as medical practitioners, have more onus and feel that more needs to be done in generating awareness among people about the disease as most even now don’t know that this virus spreads from unsterilised injections and even through blood transmission,” said Neetu Upadhyay, an Ayurvedacharya at
Rishikul. Members of the Dharm Gramin Utthan Sansthan, a government-sponsored organisation, who are constantly working in this area distributed informative pamphlets among
people. “We try to inform people of the centres where HIV test can be done, ways by which this virus spreads and avoidance of sexually transmitted diseases and private counselling on this subject,” said Shivangi Sharma, a counsellor of the
sansthan. Students of Girls College, Sati Kund, organised a rural awareness camp at Jagjitpur village. They went from home to home and inform villagers about this dreaded disease and the methods to remain unaffected from this virus. Govt to recruit 5,000 teachers, says Bisht Nainital, December 1 Addressing a gathering at Adhora in remote Okhalkanda block of Nainital district, the minister claimed that the government was in the process of recruiting 5,000 teachers from primary to middle level besides facilitating the recruitment of teachers in schools that are not being directly run by the government.
“The government is also working towards promoting 138 teachers of the matriculation and inter levels to the posts of principal,” he
added. Bisht said his aim was to ensure the presence of teachers in the schools located in remote parts of the
state. Expressing satisfaction over his drive of surprise inspections of educational institutions across the state, he claimed more than 80 per cent of teachers were found present in their respective schools in the wake of the drive. When he was apprised by local residents of the school in Suvakot remaining closed, he asked the officials concerned to ensure that the school started functioning within a week, failing which action would be taken against the erring officials and teachers.
The minister told the gathering that in order to provide education to every child free of cost, the Pahal scheme had been launched and it was being ensured that primary schools and anganwaris functioned side by side at the same
location. “The government is trying its best to provide basic facilities to the residents of remote areas of the state. The Gaura Devi Kanyadhan Yojana has been stared to promote education among girls and one high school and an inter college are being developed as model educational institutes in every block of the state,” Bisht added.
He announced a grant of Rs 50,000 from his development fund for the completion of a road leading to a school in Adhora. He thanked two residents of the same village, Tulsi Mehra and Harish Chandra Mehra, for donating their land for the construction of a health sub-centre in the village and pointed out that they had set an example that needed to be followed by others. |
Planet Earth theme of science congress Pitthoragarh, December 1 “This year a total of 25,600 student scientists in the age group of 10 to 17 participated in this congress from all 13 districts of Uttarakhand. As many as 150 selected models and research papers are being presented in this state-level Congress,” said Dr Ashok Kumar Pant, state co-originator of this children’s science congress and scientific adviser of
PAHAL. The idea of the children’s science congress was suggested by the Education Reform Committee headed by Dr Yashpal, a renowned scientist, and was included in the national curriculum formulation report of 2005, said Dr Pant.
“Right from the inception of the state in the 2000, the state committee of science congress, sponsored by the National Science and Technology Communication Council (NCSTC), New Delhi, came into existence and the sequence of exploring young scientists began,” said Ashok Pant. Whereas in 2001 a total of 2,339 young scientists submitted 5,001 research papers, the number rose to 9,920 participants and 2,980 research papers in 2008.
“Besides the increased numbers, our themes also varied from bio-diversity to alternative source of power,” said Dr
Pant. “Every year at least 10 child scientists take part in a national-level children’s science congress from Uttarakhand whose models have been appreciated”. |

Distortion of language perturbs News Reader Dehradun, December 1 A firm believer in the old school of news delivery, he is perturbed by the distortion of language that has pervaded the market-dominated FM news channels (private). “We have been borrowing heavily from several languages over the years, but the kind of language that is being used by anchors in these radio programmes is a bit jarring. I do not like the sound of Hinglish. It is no consolation that several youngsters are using it,” he said. Pandey retired in ’97 as News Reader/Editor of News Service Division, Delhi Samachar Sewa
Prabhag. Here in Dehradun to participate in the workshop organised for amateur artistes by the Uttarakhand Culture Department and the North Central Zonal Cultural Centre, Allahabad, Pandey said the working at the All-India Radio is different. “A story part of the news bulleting on the radio can only be transmitted if it is corroborated through sources. Once I had to apologise for wrong information pertaining to the death of former Prime Minister Jagjivan Ram. His doctors had not declared him medically dead then, but a mistake was made and the goof-up had to be corrected,” he said, recollecting the incident that occurred when late Rajiv Gandhi was the Prime
Minister. Lamenting at the absence of discerning viewers in India, he said the Indian audience had not matured to a level that they could pressurise the content makers to give programmes which had high value and appeal. “Once it happens, we will have a revolution of sorts and programmes which encourage superstition and narrow beliefs will never be telecast on television,” Pandey
asserted. Later, amateur artistes attended the workshop on organising interviews and other aspects of preparing content for the radio. Altogether 32 participants will benefit from the workshop that has been organised for the first time in the city. |
The man who popularised basketball in Doon Dehradun, December 1 He has made the game so popular in the city that every local school has adopted the game and recruited coaches for their basketball teams. This was not the case with basketball in Dehradun in the 1990s, when Vachani began his coaching career in
Dehradun. “I got many opportunities to make a career outside Dehradun, but I opted otherwise and stayed in the city. I started working at the grass-roots level with young upcoming basketball players of the city,” said
Vachani. He is at present employed with the Welham Girls’ school as Physical Education Director, where he has nine coaches working under him.
His love for basketball began in 1970, when he started playing basketball under the guidance of Irish Brothers at St Joseph Academy. “I was a Class V student then. After representing school at a tournament, my passion for the game just grew with every passing day and thereafter I played for Garhwal University and then moved to the national championships,” he stressed.
Vachani later went to Patiala to do his course at the NIS in 1988. Immediately after completing the NIS course, he was offered a job by the Sports Authority of India at Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh. “Yes, I was offered a job at Madhya Pradesh, but I never intended to leave my city. I had got so much from it, that I just wanted do something for this city”.
“The Welham Girls’ School gave me that opportunity and the all liberty I needed to implement my thoughts and philosophy at the grass-roots level,” said Vachani. The school team has been winning all major tournament of Dehradun, and seems to have become as invincible,” he added.
Speaking about his team’s success at Basketball he said: “There is a thin difference between us and other school teams. My players practise the game throughout the year and we hold camps from time to time whereas in other schools it is more of a seasonal game,” asserted
Vachani. That’s is not all, he has been constantly writing articles that are published in reputed international magazines like “Winning Hoops” and “X’s and O’s”. Apart from this, he is a member of the Australian Basketball Coaches Association for the past 14 years. He had also been a coach of the Indian Women Basketball team that won a bronze medal at Malaysia in 2005. He has conducted 17 national camps and attended 17 international coaching workshops. He is a grade ‘A’ NIS and grade ‘A’ referee.
“I am now working on long-term plans. I have started working with Class V students, that will be my 2,016th team. This is something which other schools do not follow.”
He was given an honour by the Welham Boys’ school with the title of “Father of Uttarakhand Basketball”. |
