Woman strives to make mandua popular again
Pitthoragarh, November 29 Mandua, which was cultivated on 2 crore hectares in 2002. At present, the area under it has been reduced to half in the entire country. To save the mandua crop in the hills of Uttarakhand, the state government in 2003 tried to tie up with a Japanese firm to produce baby food from mandua with the aim to promote its cultivation. Nothing much was heard of the government project after its announcement, but Devki did try her hand in successfully making namkeens from mandua. The products were launched by Uttarakhand Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhariyal Nishank in Pitthoragarh on November 9. “Initially, we started making mandua sticks, chips and bhujiya along with our other common preparations,” recalled Devki Devi, winner of a national award for micro entrepreneurship and Tilu Rautili award to empower women in the state. Mandua, also known as koda in Garhwal, along with madira and kauni and other coarse grains, is grown in Uttarakhand with a yield of 400-800 kg per hectare, claims Dr Sarita Srivastava, who is working on a project to treat diabetic patients with coarse grains at GB Pant University, Pantnagar. “Mandua contains calcium, iron potassium, magnesium more than wheat and rice and is good for people suffering from diabetes, blood pressure, heart diseases and indigestion,” she said. Devki had started using mandua to prepare various snacks keeping its medicinal value in mind after an agriculture scientist from Pantnagar University in 2004 persuaded her to utilise local coarse grains for her products. “We started research on the product to find out a formula and it cost us more than Rs 1 lakh and it took four years to complete,” recalled Devki, who has been nominated for National Productivity Award 2008. Devki, after launching the mandua products in Pitthoragarh, opened a stall at India international Trade Fair (IITF), New Delhi, 2009, which was organised at Pragati Maidan from November 14 to 27. “Out of total snacks put up at the stall, 50 per cent were mandua products, which were not only purchased by people from hills but also by those hailing from other places because of its medicinal values,” said Devki, who is now preparing mandua snacks for the national Khadi Expo to be held in Dehradun from December 3 this year. The economics of mandua snacks is much more attractive. This course grain, which generally sells for Rs 5 a kg, is purchased by Devki from farmers of Madkot and Jauljivi valley in Pitthoragarh and sold at better rates after preparing snacks out of it. “I produced five quintals of mandua this year. It would have gone waste had these people not arrived at my doorstep to purchase it for Rs 7 a kg. This has encouraged me to cultivate more mandua,” said Shayam Raj Bhatt, a farmer of Baluakote village. Devki has not stopped here. She is now working on other coarse grains, gahat and jhangora. “After we became successful in producing snacks from mandua and soyabean, we are now in the process of preparing snacks from gahat and madira, another forgotten crops of Uttarakhand,” said Devki. |
‘Doctors misusing Red Cross symbol liable for punishment’
Dehradun, November 29 He said doctors and other hospital units using the plus symbol were liable for punishment. “The Indian Parliament had passed an ordinance in 1960 against its misuse as per the Geneva convention,” he said. He was speaking at the workshop held today in which special emphasis was laid on the use and misuse of the Red Cross. He further said to reduce mortality and morbidity, the Red Cross Society in the state was actively involved in all health programmes underway in the state. It had achieved a singular distinction of constituting a State Disaster Management Committee. “The idea is to create a State Disaster Response team with 30 members mostly volunteers from the Indian Red Cross Society, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and hospitals that will carry relief work in the state,” said Dr Pal. At the workshop, he said the Red Cross Society was committed to creating volunteers during peace and emergency that were trained in administering first aid. These volunteers were imparted seven days training by a cadre of 40 medical officers. “The State Red Cross Society had made financial contributions for the affected families during the Bihar floods in 2008,” he said. It was also actively contributing in the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) programmes by holding blood donation camps and training volunteers in first aid. |
Tourist rush at Rajaji Park all-time high
Haridwar, November 29 The number of tourists visiting the park in the first 10 days of its opening suggests this year all previous records will be broken. This seems more achievable as the next year, lakhs of devotees visiting Haridwar for the Maha Kumbh won’t like to miss the opportunity to be amid wildlife in the park. As per data of visitor arrivals in the first 10 days of its opening, 725 tourists visited the park. This included 104 foreigner tourists. In the previous 2008-09 session, 1,886 foreigners had visited the park in full six-month park season while 17,956 tourists were from the domestic category. While last year’s earnings from visitors were Rs 1,745,730, 10 days of this season have recorded and earning of Rs 82,990. The influx of tourists can be attributed to various reasons, one being the park fast gaining popularity as the abode of Asian elephants. This is the USP of the park and is synonymous with this species of elephant. Secondly, the steps taken by the park administration to make it tourist friendly and as well as in conservation of wildlife flora and fauna has also helped in attracting
more tourists. Chilla ranger MS Negi points out that apart from first-time visitors, the number of tourists paying a second visit to the park is also growing. The park administration is banking on the upcoming Maha Kumbh to be held for four months from January. With park to close months after that on November 15, this season seems to be heading for a record-breaking number of visitors. Though this is early period, animals and birds will be more visible at the park in the coming days. Wildlife scientist Ritesh Joshi says tourist flow will grow more in the coming months as wildlife sighting will rise with change in climate and also migratory birds will be easily
visible then. Last year the tourist flow touched a moderate level due to various reasons. With terrorism threat looming large across major parts of India last year, foreign tourists’ inflow suffered. Secondly, economic recession affected the flow of both national and international tourists, specially coming through bulk corporate bookings. Last year, just a month after the park was opened for tourists, Mumbai terror attacks rocked the whole nation. And the global meltdown which affected severely the financial condition domestic tourists too avoided vacation and leisure trips and thus RNP too got affected which relies more on wild life lovers, adventure tourists and bulk corporate bookings. Add to it, the 15th Lok Sabha elections held in five phases from April to May affected the tourist inflow at park. |

Boxing: Federation plans to start ranking tournaments We are planning to have ranking tournaments that will offer a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh to the winner. In these tournaments the international points of the participants will not be included. Otherwise, those participating in tournaments abroad will have an advantage over the domestic talent that has not had international exposure — Col PK Muralidharan Raja, Secretary General, Indian Boxing Federation
Rajeev Khanna
Nainital, November 29 Col PK Muralidharan Raja, who is the Secretary General of the Indian Boxing Federation, said the rules for starting ranking tournaments had been framed and this would be followed by framing of rules for men. “We are planning to have ranking tournaments that will offer a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh to the winner. In these tournaments the international points of the participants will not be included. Otherwise those participating in tournaments abroad will have an advantage over the domestic talent that has not had international exposure,” he said. With money being a key motivating factor, it is being planned that cash incentives be introduced in other tournaments as well and a player winning from the pre-quarter stage upwards gets
cash rewards. At the same time, the federation is asking the states to promote the game at the grassroot level. It has come up with offers to provide rings, gloves and other equipment on 75:25 cost sharing pattern to promote the game in
different states. The federation has just ordered 20 rings, which will be given to different states and officials believe that this is just
a beginning. Col Raja said people coming into the game were finding things looking bright for them. “There is too much talent available at the local level. It is good to see this talent come up and cause major upsets at all kinds of tournaments. Recently a girl who had defeated Mary Com in a tournament was beaten 22-6 by yet another unknown face from Madhya Pradesh. So one can imagine the talent and the potential we have,”
Raja said. Officials point out that it has to be ensured that the talent available in the state and anywhere in the country gets properly represented at the state, national and other all-India level games from where players can be picked up for training at the international level. |
