Multi-fuel pumping set
Multi-fuel pumping set

Dehradun, November 24
Yashovardhan Birla, Chairman of the Yash Birla Group of Companies, today launched a multi-fuel water pumping set, the first of its kind in the country for use by farmers. The pump can be operated on both diesel as well as on kerosene. The multi-fuel self-priming centrifugal pump set, also known as Birla Ecoshakti, was developed by Birla Power Solutions Limited, a Dehradun-based Yash Birla Group Company.

Kalyan Bhattacharya, President of the Birla Power Solutions Limited, introducing the product, said the pump developed by the company was a four-stroke, petrol-start and diesel/kerosene-run engine made with the Japanese technology. He said the pumping set to be used by farmers to meet their irrigation requirement for pumping groundwater would be beneficial and economical. “It gives tremendous power from every drop of fuel with its three-horse power engine having greater strength to pull water from deep wells,” he said.

He further said it had easy fuel changeover from kerosene to diesel and vice versa and led to saving of both time and fuel. “The pump can run for an hour on 1.5 litres of fuel,” he said.

Speaking on the occasion, Birla said it was always in his mind as to why diesel or kerosene-run engines couldn’t be produced that would benefit small farmers of the country. He congratulated the Birla Power Solution team for coming up with an efficient and cost-effective product for the farmers. He announced that the company would be manufacturing 3,500 pumps in the next five months that would be sold in north-eastern states and Uttar Pradesh, that had greater demand for such pumps.

Most of the dealers and farmers assembled for the launch of the pump from different parts of the country said they were selling Chinese pumps with no guarantee or after-sale service. Birla assured the dealers and the farmers that his company would do every thing possible to give cost-effective services to its buyers.

Kamal Hussain, a dealer from Bangladesh, said the cost was the most important factor for the sale of pumping sets in Bangladesh as cheap Chinese pumps had invaded the market in his country. Bhattacharya assured him to give excellent after-sale service and cost-effective product to Bangladeshi buyers.

Bhattacharya said there was a greater demand for such pumps in Nepal, Bangladesh and African countries and the company would be expanding its production capabilities soon.

“We will soon be launching more products in the power sector as our gensets in all ranges have a huge demand across the country and abroad,” he added.

Now, Ganga cleaning with tree plantation
Sandeep Rawat
Tribune News Service

Haridwar, November 24
Even as pollution in the holy river Ganga has become a major issue, a new method has been devised and is being applied to clean the river. It involves plantation of trees only.

The idea is to grow plants and trees in between sewage drains so as the plants naturally clean the polluted water. Wetlands will be developed at all major open sewer lines which merge into the Ganga from Haridwar to Ganga Sagar.

After much research and deliberations, this scheme has been launched by the National Botanical Research Institute (NBRI) situated in Lucknow.

Informing about the project, NRBI Director Rakesh Tuli said this methodology had been devised by the institute after a comprehensive research and detailed aspects taken in consideration on the Ganga’s course from Haridwar to Ganga Sagar.

As the major problem arising is of filth and sewage drains merging into the river, this methodology was felt as the best suited for treatment of sewage before it mixes up with the river water.

Initially, 10 places have been earmarked in Haridwar where a plantation drive will be carried under out the project. Land allotment and purchase procedure is on.

Such projects have been carried out in European countries, too, and this methodology has been quite effective there in the cleaning of rivers.

Dev Sanskriti University Chancellor Pranav Pandya Pandya termed it as a good sign for the Ganga cleaning drive, which needed support from all sections of society.

Chidanand Muni of Parmarth Niketan, Rishikesh, who himself is involved in the Ganga cleaning drive, lauds the scientists’ initiative of the usage of nature in cleaning the holy river.

NRBI’s scientists along with IIT’s scientists point out the full implementation of this project can clean the Ganga in a few years, but there are apprehensions too.

Rama Raut, founder of the Ganga Bachao Andolan, says claims and ground-level work are two different things. The sanctioning of the project has taken a decade and if one wants desirable and effective results, genuine efforts coupled with fundings are quite essential.

Commissioner Raju steals the show with his straight talk
Rajeev Khanna
Tribune News Service

Nainital, November 24
Kumaon Commissioner S Raju stole the show at a function organised to discuss newly released book “Khaki Mein Insan” written by Inspector General of Police (IG) Ashok Kumar.

Drawing similes and using appropriate metaphors, the Commissioner very candidly and in a straightforward manner related what ails the system in India. His tongue-in-cheek comments not only drew peals of laughter from those present but also evoked serious thought as to what needs to be done to put things right.

Raju said: “The perception that has gone down is that if I am a Commissioner, it has got something to do with commission and the persons under me are collectors and they are somehow related to collection.”

" The perception that has gone down is that if I am a Commissioner, it has got something to do with commission and the persons under me are collectors and are somehow related to collection. — Kumaon Commissioner S Raju

He also pointed out how the grooming of new bureaucrats and police officials included aspects such as distancing them from the common people. There are so many pressures ranging from those political in nature to those coming from society through the media that pose problems for straightforward officials in performing their duties, he added.

He also underlined that mediocrity was always encouraged and no one was ready to go ahead and do things or stick out his neck.

In a lighter vein, the Commissioner pointed out that it is important for public servants to have zeal to serve the people but a person having such zeal is not liked by his own subordinates. Relating a personal example, he said even the peon was shocked at his approach towards immediately calling in the visitors when he was the Collector in Mainpuri.

“The parameter for evaluation of the performance of officials is altogether different. An official is thought to be good if nothing happens in an area during his tenure,” he said.

Taking a potshot at Ashok Kumar, he said: “He has come out with ardh satya (half truth). Maybe he or even I will come out with purna satya (complete truth) after retirement.”

The book written by the IG brings out a positive image of the police personnel and tries to convey that even men in uniform are humane. The book underlines that if done with a humane approach, policing can bring about a major change in society. The book depicts his personal experiences in dealing with different situations ranging from incidents of gang rape to dowry deaths and tackling militancy in Terai.

A farmer from Terai, Virsa Singh Pehelwan, who had stood up openly against the militants encouraging the masses to follow suit, was also present on the occasion.

The speakers at the function included Vice-Chancellor of Kumaon University VPS Arora, Prof Uma Bhatt, writer GS Palni and Principal of All Saints School Kiran Jarmaya.

Groundwater mapping of Doon to meet future needs

Dehradun, November 24
In order to get comprehensive information about the availability of groundwater and future exploration sites, the Jal Sansthan has started an exercise of mapping groundwater in Doon in collaboration with the University of Applied Sciences Dresden University, Germany.

As the topography of Dehradun is uneven, the exercise, called for the establishment of groundwater monitoring well network, will boost efforts to provide uninterrupted water supply in areas in the city that are located at a certain height termed as upper zone. The global positioning system (GPS) is being used to locate sources and what is aiding the workers are the already existing hand pumps and bore-well sites mapped by Asian Development Bank (ADB) during the earlier project.

“Not only is the availability of groundwater ascertained, but also the quality of water is being tested in case new water supply schemes have to be introduced. Essentially, a groundwater contour map is being prepared. As the city is dependent for most of its needs on groundwater, such a map will be of immense help. There are roughly 21 key points comprising existing bore points and hand-pump sites in the city,” said PC Kimothi, Secretary (Appraisal), Jal Sansthan.

The Jal Sansthan has been trying to upgrade the water supply in the upper zone areas of Dehradun consisting of Rajpur and Malsi where earlier attempts to set up a mini-tube-well failed. “But repeated search helped us in establishing a mini-tube-well at Johri and it is generating 500-600 litres of water per minute. These mini-tube-wells can be sunk on the roadside and do not even require a pump house,” said Neelima Garg, Executive Engineer, Central Store, Dehradun.

Jal Sansthan’s technocrats are of the opinion that after the successful mapping of Dehradun, similar efforts would be undertaken in Haridwar, Udham Singh Nagar and Pauri.

To enhance water supply, a collaborative effort among the Jal Sansthan, IIT-Roorkee, the University of Applied Sciences, Dresden, Germany, and Dusseldorf Water Company (Germany) is under way on the river bank filtration technique.

It is being carried out on the Ganga at Pant Dweep Island, Haridwar. It is accounting for 50 per cent of water supply and the daily production of water is 32 mld. At present, 3-5 metres of aquifer is being tapped. Now, 38 per cent of water is being extracted through infiltration wells.

Roorkee, November 24
To mitigate the problem of shortage of faculty, the IIT authorities are contemplating attracting eligible candidates from foreign countries. While talking to the Tribune, IIT, Roorkee, Director, Prof SC Saxena said they (IIT-R) had started thinking on the lines.

“All IITs across the country are facing the problem of faculty shortage. So, we are contemplating to make a programme to attract the eligible candidates from abroad to overcome the problem,” said Professor Saxena.

All IITs in the country are facing the problem of faculty shortage. We are contemplating to make a programme to attract eligible candidates from abroad to overcome the problem, but no compromise on standards and eligibility criterion will be made.
— Prof SC Saxena, Director, IIT-R

The top brass of IIT-R maintained that now time has changed and many NRIs as well as foreign-based educationists wanted to come to India and work. “The reason is that now the economic conditions and quality of life have improved in our country. Many foreigners want to come and work here of late. Taking advantage of this new trend, we too want to get faculty staff out of India to meet the shortage,” said Professor Saxena while adding that no compromise on standards and eligibility criterion would be made in this regard.

The IIT-R Director maintained that many foreign-based candidates had been contacting the institute authorities in this regard. “We are getting lot of queries in this regard every now and then,” said Professor Saxena.

On pay structure, Professor Saxena commented that the IIT staff has been getting highest grades of central government. “So I don’t think that salaries will be an issue in this direction,” he said.

Notably, every IIT in the country has been facing 20 to 30 per cent shortage of staff. There is reportedly 31 per cent of shortage of faculty in IIT, Roorkee.

As per IIT standards, there should be one faculty for every 10 students. Here in IIT, Roorkee, as many as 5,502 students have been studying while the reported number of faculty is 379.

Presently, the institute needs to induct minimum 180 more teachers to come out of the teaching staff shortage problem.

With the coming out of new eight IITs, the problem will be graver in coming days.

“Every year, we are inducting 25-30 new teachers here. I don’t think that with the creation of new IITs, the problem will be out of control,” said Professor Saxena.

Maintenance of ice-skating rink seems a costly affair
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, November 24
Ice Skating Rink that is coming up at Maharan Pratab Sports College, Dehradun, can prove to be a costly affair for the state government. The rink requires a regular supply of electricity to maintain the snow-freezing level throughout to help the skaters enjoy skating.

But the cost of electricity of the rink is expected to be in lakhs. The rink is being prepared for the South Asian Winter Games scheduled next year in the month of January.

The 80m x 40m multipurpose hall, which contains the ice-skating rink, has the seating capacity of over 1,500 people with good amount of lighting facilities. To meet the electricity expenses, one requires to have about 100 students using the rink with every person paying Rs 100, and the rink should be used for at least 10 to 12 hours every day.

It can prove to be a tough job for the state to maintain the rink worth corers. Seeing the expense, there are talks that the state government will outsource the project to some client, once the SAF Winter Games are over.

Despite this impossible task of meeting the expenses, the State Skating Association president, Brig SS Patwal (retd) said, “Yes, it is true that we require a regular supply of electricity for running the rink, otherwise it is impossible to run the rink. Dehradun being the state capital, electricity supply will not be a major problem.”

Patwal said, “It will not be impossible to meet the expenses of the rink. Dehradun, which has well known 30-40 public schools, can well help us to meet the requirement. We will organise free camps for children to generate interest in them for the game,” added Patwal. He further said, “The association’s main object is to prepare 30-40 good ice-skating players, who will participate in competitions which held in other countries. This in turn will attract players from foreign countries as well.”

Initially, the center government issued a fund amounting to Rs 50 crores for hosting SAF Winter Games in the state at two venues, which includes Dehradun and Auli. The budget was later increased to 102 crore, which has now reached 110 crore. The construction at both sites is in its finishing stage.

Carrying forward family legacy

Dehradun, November 24
A career in education is what Meenakshi Gandotra, Principal, Jaswant Modern Senior Secondary School, got in heritage. This school, founded by her grandmother and run by her mother, after they came to India from Pakistan, is now further strengthened in her able hands. “This school has the blessings of the Divine Life Society, a sect based in Rishikesh. Head of this sect Shivanand Ji Maharaj had asked my grandmother to build a school. The school has been progressing leaps and bounds since then,” she says.

Quality of education has been the hallmark of the school. She has taken forward the task by giving her personal touch to it. She says: “My mother worked hard on establishing it. Having got it all laid out, I brought in the best infrastructure and technology to make it in sync with today’s times”.

She pays utmost importance to a good-value system because she believes this is what stands children in good stead in future. She adds: “I don’t believe in discussing Thought for the Day and wrapping up the assembly session in the morning. I take up one issue or concern, it may be related to the children in school or in news, involve students in a brain-storming session on that topic in the assembly time”.

Gandotra is happy over replacing the percentage system with grading for Class X. She thinks it will lessen the baggage from the minds of children and pave the way to hone other skills as well. She says: “Earlier, children were always bogged down with scoring more and more marks in order to improve their percentage. Parents and teachers were always on tenterhooks for this. But, with the introduction of the grading system, students will no longer need to run in that rat race. They will be able to study at peace and participate in extra-curricular activities. The change will carve out better citizens for the country”.

Making brouhaha in the media over even minor corporal punishment is what upsets her, as she says: “At times, children take advantage of this leniency. If they are punished in some other way, like suspending them from class for days, then their studies suffer. In my view, there is nothing wrong in giving a slight corporal punishment to those who are unruly and unmanageable”.
