Defeat motivates. After the drubbing they received at the hands of Tamil Nadu last week, Punjab seemed to have learnt their lessons diligently today as they not only bundled out Gujarat for a paltry 160, but also managed to reach 77 for the loss of two wickets at stumps.

Kanpur, November 24
Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag were the architects of India’s unrelenting dominance as the hosts batted themselves into a position from where they can dictate terms in the second cricket Test against Sri Lanka here today.

The near-capacity Green Park witnessed a lop-sided opening day, completely dominated by the Indian batsmen and their blazing blades as the hosts cruised to a mammoth 417 for two and threatened to raise a run-mountain under which they can bury their opponents.

Arguably the most evolved batsman of recent times, Gambhir first starred in a blistering 233-run partnership with Sehwag in just 41.2 overs before forging another 137-run association with Rahul Dravid. India’s unyielding grip over all three sessions had the islanders totally at sea.

Right from Mahendra Singh Dhoni winning the toss, India hardly put a foot wrong today. Sehwag and Gambhir milked 131 runs in the 26-over morning session without being separated.

The Sri Lankans did manage to cut short Sehwag’s explosive stay in the second session but they bled 176 runs in that 33-over segment as India consolidated their position.

Gambhir best opener after Gavaskar: Sehwag

Virender Sehwag has forced many a bowlers into submission by his explosive batting but today he doffed his hat to Gautam Gambhir describing him as the best Indian opener after the legendary Sunil Gavaskar. Gambhir (167) today slammed his fourth successive century on the opening day of the second Test against Sri Lanka and Sehwag, who himself scored a blistering 131, said his younger opening partner can score another hundred in the next match. "He (Gambhir) is best opener India had after Gavaskar. He has hit four successive Test centuries and already has eight Test centuries in 25-30 Tests. I think with the kind of form he is in, he can slam a ton in the next Test as well," Sehwag said after India piled on 417 for two on the opening day.

Gambhir 3rd Indian to hit 4 successive tons

The blazing 167-run knock against Sri Lanka today earned opener Gautam Gambhir the distinction of being only third Indian batsman after Sunil Gavaskar and Rahul Dravid to slam hundreds in four consecutive Test matches.

The left-hander had scored the first of his four successvive centuries against New Zealand in Napier, slamming 137. He followed it up with another ton in the next match against the Kiwis, accumulating 167 runs in the March-April series. The third back-to-back century came against the Sri Lankans in the opening Test in Ahemedabad where he notched up 114 runs. — PTI

Defeat motivates. After the drubbing they received at the hands of Tamil Nadu last week, Punjab seemed to have learnt their lessons diligently today as they not only bundled out Gujarat for a paltry 160, but also managed to reach 77 for the loss of two wickets at stumps.

On the opening day of their crucial Ranji Trophy Elite ‘A’ division encounter against Gujarat at the PCA stadium here, Love Ablish and Gony vindicated their captain’s decision to put the visitors in on a track, which had something in it for the pacers all day long.

Ablish in particular, had much to celebrate as he bowled his heart out and scalped six wickets, there by in the process improving his earlier career best mark. His earlier best of 5 for 40 had also incidentally come against the same opponent at this very venue during the 2006 season.

“I am happy I contributed to the team’s cause. We bowled in the right areas and they struggled. Now we need enough runs on the board to put pressure on them. We will go for the six points this time,” said Ablish after the match. Punjab made five changes while Gujarat fielded the same combination.

Punjab drew first blood in the very first over of the innings with Chauhan edging one behind the stumps off Love. Chandan Madan came up with a great diving effort to pluck the ball out of thin air. The Punjab wicketkeeper had a busy, but fruitful, day at office taking three difficult chances including one of last match’s century maker Rujul Bhatt.

Desai and Niraj tried to hold the innings together and took the score to 75 and Gujarat seemed to have withered the initial storm. Within 10 more runs visitors lost four quick wickets and they were reeling at 85 for 5 at one stage. Parthiv could only manage four, while four of Gujarat’s batsmen did not bother the scorers.

After the first interval, Rujul Bhatt and Popat showed some signs of recovery but with Bhatt throwing his wicket away after doing the hard work, Punjab ensured the tail did not last long. Gony ably supported Love with his four wicket haul.

Ravi Inder and Bhalla started cautiously and negotiated Trivedi and Makde’s opening attack with confidence. Ravi scored well composed 35 before wasting another good start.

With 83 runs still to get with 8 wickets in hand, Punjab seem to be well on course for a hefty first innings lead, but the opening session blues must be playing on their mind when they venture out on Wednesday morning. How much will it really matter ? The hosts and visitors are bound to differ and rightly so.

Brief Scores

Gujarat 160 (Niraj 39, Love 6-79, Gony 4-38)

Punjab 77 for 2 (Ravi Inder 35).

Ashwin ton, Karthik fifty lift TN against HP

A gritty unbeaten century by R Ashwin (107) and Dinesh Karthik's defiant 70 helped Tamil Nadu reach 293 for eight against Himachal Pradesh on the opening day of their Ranji Trophy Elite Group A match at Dharamsala. Batting at number eight, Ashwin combined brilliantly with lower-order batsman to keep his side afloat after the tragic runout of their skipper Kartik. Ashwin though was in no mood to surrender and brough his team back with his gallant knock.

Brief Scores:

Tamil Nadu 1st innings: 293 for 8 in 90 overs (R Ashwin 107 n.o., D Karthik 70; V Malik 3/79, M Sharma 2/58).

Still shooting in dark?
Karnail Singh Shooting Range completion delay making players anxious

Patiala, November 24
The delay in the completion of the repair and infrastructure work at Dr. Karnail Singh Shooting Range, New Delhi has left some of the Indian shooters worried. Indian shooters, who were recently in the city for participating in the 53rd National Shooting Championship Competition (NSCC) in Shotgun Events, opined that delay in the completion of work at Delhi Shooting Range may hinder their preparation for the coming Commonwealth Games.

Notably, the Delhi Shooting Range would host the Commonwealth Shooting Championship from February 18 to 28 next year. Indian shooter Mansher Singh said any shooter would like to shoot maximum at Dr. Karnail Singh Range, while adding that range should have been completed by October but it is taking longer than what was expected.

Another shooter Biren Sodhi also echoed Mansher’s views and said it would have been much better had the range completed on time. “It is obvious that one can perform much better if one gets more time to practice at range that would host such a big event”, he asserted. Meanwhile, due to ongoing construction work at the Delhi range, the national camp for shooting will now be held at Patiala range and subsequently shooters will shift to Delhi range by December end.

Secretary general of Indian Olympic Association Randhir Singh said work at the range will be completed by December end. “We will allow the shooters to practice in Delhi in January, so that they can prepare for more than a month for the Commonwealth Shooting Championship”, he said.

When contacted, National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) president Digvijay Singh admitted that there has been some delay in repair work at the shooting range. “We would be able to hold the camp at the Delhi Range by January. The government has speeded up the work and we are hopeful that it would end up being a world class range”, he added.

Top Indian shooter caught scratching target
Ravi Dhaliwal

Muktsar, November 24
Top Indian women shooter Ruby Tomar, who is also among the core group preparing for the Commonwealth Games, has been trapped in a quagmire of her own making when she illegally scratched the target with her nails in the 10 meter air pistol event in the 53rd National shooting championship, which concluded at Jalandhar on November 19.

This development has forced the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) to institute an enquiry into the incident, which is being held under the chairmanship of Avtar Singh, senior vice president of the Association. During the Jalandhar Nationals Tomar, who represented Punjab, allegedly scratched the target with her nails in the 10m air pistol event in an attempt to get undue advantage over her colleagues. However, even as she was into this illegal act, she was noticed by a couple of scorers who reported this incident to the organisers.

Fearing a controversy, the shell shocked NRAI officials were quick to withdraw the shooter from the Jalandhar nationals. Confirming this development, the NRAI secretary general Baljeet Singh Sethi said, “What the shooter did, is in gross violation of norms and ethics of shooting. The NRAI has instituted an enquiry and probably the shooter’s participation in the Commonwealth Games camp will be decided on December 9.”

It is pertinent to mention here that two Punjab Police shooters were also caught while trying to tamper with the target and now both have been placed under suspension.
