SL hit The Wall

  • Dravid scores unbeaten 177
  • Completes 11,000 Test runs
  • Dhoni gets first ton on Indian soil
  • Also completes 2,000 Test runs
  • Yuvraj chips in with 68

Ahmedabad, November 16
Rahul Dravid and captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni cracked sparkling centuries as India staged a remarkable recovery after a dramatic top-order collapse on the opening day of the first cricket Test against Sri Lanka here today. Dravid produced a gritty unbeaten 177 and found an able ally in captain Dhoni (110) as the duo pulled the team out of the pits and steered India to a commanding 385 for six at close on an eventful opening day.

Tottering at 32 for four in the eighth over following a triple strike by rookie left arm pacer Chanaka Welegedara, India were hoisted up by Dravid’s 27th ton and his three figure partnerships with Yuvraj Singh and Dhoni, for the fifth and sixth wickets.

The Indians, despite the early jolts, scored at a brisk pace right through the day but fell just one run short of the record first day total made by India, 386 against South Africa at the Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai in 2007-08. The hallmark of Dravid’s innings, his second hundred against the visitors, was his shot selection and the ability to stay put when the Lankans were on top in the morning. He slowly and surely upped the tempo before playing splendid drives, flicks, square cuts and pull shots.

Dravid joins 11,000 Test runs club

Senior batsman Rahul Dravid today added another feather to his cap by becoming the second Indian, fifth overall, to score 11,000 runs in Test cricket.

Dravid went into the three-match series against Sri Lanka needing 177 runs to reach the milestone and he achieved it in the opening day itself with an unbeaten 177.

It was an elegant innings that not only earned him an individual record but also came at a time when the team needed it most. Dravid's moment of glory came in the 89th over when he cut pacer Chanaka Welegedara for a single at deep point and he raised his bat in acknowledgment of the cheers at the Sardar Patel Stadium.

The Karnataka batsman now joins the elite list which has compatriot Sachin Tendulkar at the top with 12,777 runs in Test cricket.

West Indies batting great Brain Lara is second in the list with 11,953 runs from 131 matches, followed by the Australian duo of Ricky Ponting (11,345 runs from 136 Tests) and Alan Border (11,174 runs in 156 matches).

Nicknamed as 'The wall', Dravid has an awe-inspiring Test career where he scored 27 hundreds and 57 half-centuries at an average of 53.39 in 135 Tests. The 36-year-old batsman also has a whopping 10,765 runs from 339 ODIs at a average of 39.43 where he scored 12 hundreds and 82 fifties. Meanwhile, Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni crossed 2,000 runs in Tests cricket in company of Dravid. Dhoni reached the mark during the course of his second Test century. — PTI

Preferential treatment meted out to the politicians during a sports function organised at PAU left an international athlete, Manjeet Kaur fuming as she was not attended properly at the function.

Though she was invited by the Punjab sports department for her remarkable performance in Asian Athletic Championship at China recently where she bagged a bronze and a silver in different track events, she was given a cold shoulder at the function.

Deputy Chief Minster, Sukhbir Singh Badal mentioned about the achievements of hockey players of the state, there was no reference about her contribution.

All through the function that lasted for atleast three hours, she was not attended by anyone. Nobody could recognise her and she kept on whiling away time by making herself comfortable here and there.

She was given a memento like other participants and was asked to stay back till the Deputy CM leaves the venue.

A sports promoter sitting there was a witness to the treatment given to her. Praying anonymity, he said he was shocked that while Badal was going ga ga over the achievements of nine hockey players who got selected in the national squad, he did even know that a legendary athelete was among them.

She had made India proud recently with her achievement. She is a sprint athlete from Punjab who specializes in 400 metres. She holds the current 400 m National record of 51.05 seconds.
