Hyderabad, November 6 Tendulkar’s 45th one-day century, a rollicking 141-ball knock, almost pulled off a great win for India yesterday but the lower-order batsmen could not score the required 19 runs from 17 balls.
“We started off very well, there was a good partnership between Suresh (Raina) and me at one point of time. But we lost few crucial wickets and also the game itself. So it’s disappointing at the end of the day,” Tendulkar said after the match which India lost by just three runs here yesterday. On being asked if he would rate this century as one of his best knocks, he said, “Ya, sort of. I was hitting the ball well. It was one of my best knocks.” Tendulkar said it is his passion to play for the nation that has inspired him to perform consistently for 20 long years ever since he made international debut in 1988 as a 16-year-old boy. “It’s the passion of representing India in international cricket that keeps me motivated all the time. It’s always a dream to play for my country. I am absolutely honoured to do that for the last 20 years,” Tendulkar said. Tendulkar also praised young left-hander Suresh Raina, who scored a run-a-ball 59 to support him well from the other end as they shared a 137-run fifth wicket partnership which was instrumental in bringing India close to win. “Raina is a terrific talent. We were trying to push the game as close as possible. We were chasing a big target, there was constant pressure on us, but we managed it well to bring the match quite close,” Tendulkar, adjudged Man-of-the-Match for his magnificent knock, said. Captains - Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Ricky Ponting - also showered encomiums on Tendulkar for his blistery knock. Dhoni said though this was another special innings by Tendulkar, his personal favourite still remains the one he produced in Sharjah against Australia in April 1998. “It was a pleasure to see him batting so well. All his centuries have been special and this too. But I am still a big fan of his desert storm (innings),” he said. “It’s one of the best knocks I have seen. Sachin was playing beautifully today. And I think, the wickets was also great here and enthusiastic crowd all around as well,” Ponting said. — PTI |

Chandigarh, November 6 After off-spinner Ramesh Powar had slammed a hundred and O Khanvilkar had missed the milestone by 13 runs, paving the way for the crucial 212-run first-innings lead for Mumbai yesterday, the only interest left in the match was for the hosts to bat well and avoid an outright defeat. Punjab batsmen were not found lacking. On the contrary, they did the job quite admirably. Opener Ravi Inder Singh, who slammed a century in the first innings, came good for the second time in the match, notching up an impressive half century. Wicketkeeper batsman Uday Kaul and debutant Gaurav Gambhir both scored half centuries, while former skipper Pankaj Dharmani, made amends for his failure in the first innings with a scintillating 46-run knock, with nine hits to fence. M S Goni was unbeaten along with Rahul Sharma having played a 32-ball 33 run cameo, underlining his utility as a batsman as well, as the hosts were 311 for 7 in 98 overs when the last day’s play ended. Seeking a comeback to the Indian team after injury which has kept him out of the current ODI series against Australia, India pace spearhead Zaheer Khan bowled a steady spell finishing with three wickets in the innings. With four wickets that he scalped in the first innings for a match haul of seven wickets, the seasoned left-arm seamer looks firmly on the path to recovery. Punjab coach Bhupinder Singh Sr was content with the overall team performance. “We had a tough first match. I’m statisfied with the performance of the boys. Though they (Mumbai) took the first innings lead, there are some positives to have emerged from the match.” “It was a case of they (Powar and Khanvilkar) batting well rather than our boys bowling badly,” he replied when asked about the fine rearguard action by the Mumbai lower order batsmen yesterday, which tilted the momentum heavily in favour of the visitors. Mumbai gained three points from the match by virtue of the first innings lead, while Punjab will have to remain content with the lone point. Punjab next play Hyderabad at the PCA Stsadium, Mohali, from November 10. Scoreboard Punjab (Ist innings) 259 Sohal c Khanvilkar b Zaheer 4 |
Randhawa up to tied 8th after Rd2
Shanghai, November 6 Gaganjeet Bhullar (150) was the lone Indian who could not improve his position and followed up his opening round 74 with 76 to slip to tied 70th. World number one Tiger Woods took his customary position atop the leaderboard, tying for the halfway lead with Nick Watney after shooting a second straight five-under 67. The American world number one endured a frustrating front nine but stormed home with four birdies to join overnight leader Watney (70) on 10-under 134. Randhawa, a 10th tee starter, was even-par at the turn and he sunk three birdies, against one bogey, in his front nine to sign off with his second successive sub-par card. It was a welcome return to form for the former Asia number one, who won the Singha Thailand Open earlier this year on the Asian Tour but failed to maintain his momentum. Randhawa, however, felt there was enough room for improvement in the short game department and hoped his putting would improve over the next couple of days. — PTI |

Jalandhar, November 6 It seems that owing to the present sour relations between India and Pakistan the team failed to receive a go ahead. Asked to comment on the reason behind the team’s refusal to turn up for the prestigious event, director sports, Pargat Singh said, “I cannot say anything in this regard but since the team was not given any formal approval by the External Affairs ministry, it failed to reach here. The Government of India has not given a green signal to the Pakistani team so far.” The organisers of the tournament maintained that there has been no official confirmation by the team in this regard. Organising secretary of the tournament, Iqbal Singh Sandhu said, “It is understood that the team is not coming for the tournament as they have failed to report so far. We had completed the official formalities in this regard nearly two months back. Moreover, the official confirmation is always made well in advance.” It is pertinent to mention here that last year three Pakistan teams namely, Javed Hockey Club, Gojra, Crescent Hockey Club and Independent Hockey Club were seen in action during the tournament. The tournament would be played on league-cum-knockout basis on the newly-laid polytan turf under floodlights at the local Olympian Surjit Hockey Stadium. As per the new schedule, the teams have been divided into four pools and winner team of the each pool will qualify for the semifinals, scheduled for November 12. Last year’s champion Punjab & Sind Bank Delhi, Border Security Force (BSF) Jalandhar & Indian Air Force (IAF) Delhi have been put in pool A; Air India, Mumbai, Namdhari-XI, Sirsa & Punjab National Bank (PNB) Delhi have been kept in pool B. Former champions Indian Oil, Mumbai, Rail Coach factory (RCF) Kapurthala & EME Jalandhar have been placed in pool C, while Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPC) Mumbai, Punjab Police & Corps of Signals, Jalandhar, are in pool D. |
Force India face legal action
London, November 6 The company issued a statement after media reports suggested Force India were concerned that Lotus, who are now working closely with Aerolab’s parent company Fondtech, had copied details of their 2009 car. Lotus F1 technical head Mike Gascoyne was previously employed by Silverstone-based Force India. Aerolab managing director Jean-Claude Migeot said in a statement that the Lotus rumours were “designed only to tarnish the company’s reputation and professionalism and to divert attention away from the facts.” “The truth is that Aerolab is suing Force India for not fulfilling its obligations.” Force India were not immediately available for comment.
