Gen Sidhu reappointed PESCO chief:
Major General US Sidhu (Retd) has been reappointed as chairman-cum-managing director of Punjab Ex-servicemen’s Corporation (PESCO), an establishment for the welfare of retired defence personnel. This would be his fourth tenure as the PESCO chief.

Man held with charas:
In a search operation conducted by a police party here on Thursday, around 100 gm of charas was recovered from the possession of a person. The sources said the accused was arrested and a case had been registered against him. The accused has been identified as Shanker, a resident of Churah tehsil in the district.

Greentech award: The NHPC Region-II with headquarters at Banikhet in Chamba district is the first region in the corporate sector of the country to achieve the “Greentech Environment Excellent Gold Award-2009”. The award was conferred on the Banikhet region in a ceremony at New Delhi recently. Disclosing this here on Friday, executive director of NHPC’s Region-II SK Agrawal said the award was conferred on the NHPC Region-II for its outstanding performance in the field of environment protection.

HAMIRPUR
Woman hurt in stove burst: A woman received serious burn injuries on Thursday in her house at Lambran-di-Dhar under the Sujanpur police station when a stove got burst. Police sources said Rachna Devi (21), wife of Lokesh Kumar, was pumping the stove in her kitchen when it burst and caught fire. Her husband and father-in-law reportedly tried to douse the flames. They took her to the regional hospital, Hamirpur, from where she was referred to the medical college Tanda, where her condition was stated to be stable. According to the police, the woman denied any foul play in the incident. 

Tractor driver killed:A tractor driver has been killed and other person was seriously injured, when the tractor on which they were travelling overturned near Jangali under the Nadaun police station on Friday morning. Karam Chand (47), son of Banku Ram of Basaral village, died on the spot and Manoj Kumar was seriously injured. 

Body found:The police recovered charred body of Dharam Dass (72) in his house at Ukhali village. The DSP said he had slept in a room in his kutcha house last night. In the morning, his wife, who was sleeping in another room found the body .

Vigilance awareness week:
The Jammu and Kashmir directorate of the National Cadets Corps yesterday organised a Vigilance Awareness Week. Around 500 cadets, associate NCC officers, civilian staff and Army permanent staff participated. The function was presided over by Brig Anil Gupta, Deputy Director- General, NCC, Directorate, J&K. 

Inter-college debate: Zain-ul-Abidin , a student of MAM College, won the first prize in an inter-college debate competition held here yesterday. Vandna Sharma of Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, stood second, Huma Khan of SPMR Commerce College stood third while Zeba Bhatti got the consolation prize. 

Cultural council: Rameshwari Slathia of the business school was elected general secretary of the Students Cultural Council of University of Jammu.Indu Bagal from the department of physics and electronics; Meenakshi Anand from the department of home sciences and Ankita Gupta from the department of library and information sciences were elected joint secretaries.

On the eve of National Legal Services Day on November 9, a legal awareness camp will be organised on the premises of the Munsiff Court Complex here.Ltigants and the public will be made aware about the free legal aid scheme and the J&K State Legal Services Authority Act, 1997.
