An Indian first, Sachin is a
true patriot
Indeed, the people of Maharashtra and of India in general love Sachin far too much and they would never forgive a person who seeks to belittle this jewel in India’s crown (editorial, “Sachin for India : Bal Thackeray divisive as usual”, Nov 18). Region based politics of Shiv Sena and the MNS, as well as the caste-based politics of Ms Mayawati ought to have no place in our democracy. Such petty politics would lead to social unrest and could create hurdles in progress of the nation. Such leaders should remember that the nation is supreme and shun their parochial ways. RAJESH SHARMA,
Jalandhar Cantt
II Sachin Tendulkar said what is expected of every Indian. The editorial has rightly stressed that the people of Maharashtra would not forgive Bal Thackeray for trying to belittle the jewel in India’s crown. Bal Thackeray and his nephew Raj Thackeray are used to making wild statements in their bid to outdo each other and portray themselves as messiah of
Maharashtrians. Their regional and divisive politics is causing an irreparable damage to the unity of the country. But it seems they are oblivious to this as long as their vested interests are served.

They deserve to be tried for treason. However, due to vote bank politics, the state government as well as the Centre is giving them a long rope. The people of Maharashtra must realise the nefarious designs of such politicians. R L MALHOTRA, Nawanshahr III Sachin Tendulkar is our national hero whom every Indian loves and genuinely respects whereas Bal Thackeray is a local politician mired in medieval beliefs like parochialism. He has spread racial and communal hatred all his life in the guise of working for the welfare of “Marathi Manoos”. Sachin is not only a great cricketer of all times but a great patriot also who loves his national identity more than his local and ethnic ties. If the legendary cricketer prefers to be an Indian first, he has every right to say so. Sachin is the uncrowned king of India and all Indians irrespective of their caste and creed and political affiliations will never allow Mr Thackeray to belittle their national hero. RAJ BAHADUR YADAV, Fatehabad Man of values The nomination of Editor-in-Chief, The Tribune, H K Dua, to Rajya Sabha is a matter of great happiness. As an editor of the best newspaper, he can feel the pulse of people. People of this region have got another representative who, though not elected by them, will represent them in true democratic spirit. R K GARG, Chandigarh II The nomination of Mr HK Dua to the Rajya Sabha is a befitting reward for his services to the cause of people, his lofty ideals and ideas in the field of journalism. He has always upheld values and ethics of the media and focused on issues of public concern. His towering personality shall be very prominently visible in Parliament. We hope he will have a fruitful innings in the Rajya Sabha. Capt AMAR JEET KUMAR, SAS Nagar III The nomination speaks volumes of his calibre and service to journalism. Time and again he has proved that the pen is mightier than the sword. We hope he will scale new heights of glory and success in his new innings. GURNAM SINGH, Khanna
