SL Tour of India 1st Test: Day 5
Ahmedabad, November 20 Opener Gautam Gambhir conjured up yet another marathon innings of 114 runs, result of his six-and-half hour vigil, before Sachin Tendulkar (100 not out) took the centrestage to chase down yet another milestone of 30,000 international runs en route to his 43rd Test ton. With VVS Laxman also chipping in with his 40th Test half-century, India batted their way out of trouble to maintain their impressive home record against the Lankans. Going into the final day’s play needing just eight wickets to snap their 14-match winless streak on Indian soil, the exasperated Sri Lankans could only watch haplessly as the hosts showed the kind of application and determination that had been missing in their shoddy first innings display. Resuming with 144 runs in the arrear, the Indians finished the day at 412 for four with Gambhir, Tendulkar and Laxman scoring bulk of the runs on a shirtfront of a wicket that simply had nothing for the bowlers. Both the teams now move to Kanpur for the second Test starting on November 24. Overall, it was a poor advertisement for Test cricket as nearly 1600 runs were scored while just 21 wickets fell over the five days’ play leading to this stalemate. The match also saw the highest number of centuries - seven - being scored on the sub-continental soil. Tendulkar’s unbeaten 211 ball knock included 11 hits to the fence. Scoreboard India

crosses Mount 30k In yet another landmark in his illustrious 20-year-old career, Sachin
Tendulkar today became the first cricketer to cross 30,000 runs in
international cricket during the first Test against Sri Lanka here. Tendulkar,
who made his international debut in a Test against Pakistan on November 15,
1989 in Karachi, crossed the milestone when he reached 35 in India’s second
innings at the Sardar Patel Stadium at Motera here. The 36-year-old batting stalwart went on to score his 43rd Test hundred and remained not out exactly on 100 to help India draw the match after they had conceded a first innings lead of 334 runs to the Lankans. Tendulkar,
Test cricket’s highest run accumulator, ended his 160th Test here sitting on
12877 runs, with 43 hundreds and 53 half centuries at an average of 54.79. From
the 436 one-day internationals he has played so far, Tendulkar has scored 17178
runs with 45 hundreds and 91 fifties at an average of 44.50. The
Mumbai batsman scored 10 from the lone Twenty20 International he has played
before he voluntarily decided not to be part of the Indian squad in the
shortest format of the game. Dhoni, Sangakkara differ on
Motera featherbed
Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni today described the Motera featherbed as
a bowler-hostile track but his Sri Lankan counterpart Kumar Sangakkara had no
issues with the strip which he described as a “true” wicket. “We were
expecting a batting pitch but thought it would deteriorate after the third day.
But it did not. It also lacked bounce. At the end it did not help any bowler -
pacers or spinners,” Dhoni said after the match. Sangakkara, however,
differed with Dhoni, saying despite the drawn match the pitch was the ultimate
winner. — PTI |
Ranji Trophy
Amritsar, November 20 Resuming from their overnight score of 114 for 5, Pankaj Dharmani and Gaurav Gambhir attempted to offer a defense to the highly organised and disciplined bowling attack from the visitors. They together piled up a partnership of 61 runs. Gambhir managed to add only 15 runs to last night’s four and Dharmani misjudged the incoming delivery of off spinner Ashwin on 56. If it were Aushik and Suresh who had together claimed five wickets for Tamil Nadu last night, today it was the turn of off spinner R Ashwin. He was the cynosure of today’s game with five wickets. Tamil Nadu outplayed Punjab in all departments of the game. Disciplined bowling, splendid batting display and flawless fielding seemed to be their watchwords. Hence, it did not take too long for the visitors in ending the hosts’ defence well before the stipulated time. Among tailenders, Luv Abhlish and Varun Khanna offered some resistance which could only delay the defeat for the home team. Abhlish scored 29 while Khanna contributed 30 runs. Sarbjit Singh Ladda was out on 15. Brief Scores Punjab (Ist innings) 228 all out Tamil Nadu (Ist innings) 521 for 9 Punjab (2nd innings) 248 all out (Pankaj Dharmani 56) Mumbai thump Himachal by 85 runs Riding on fine performances from veteran Ajit Agarkar and left-arm spinners Iqbal Abdulla and Harmeet Singh, Mumbai staged a remarkable comeback to defeat Himachal Pradesh by 85 runs in their Group A Super League Ranji Trophy match here today. The hosts, who were bundled out for a paltry 162 in their first innings and conceded an 84-run lead, bowled out Himachal for 166 in 67 overs 13 minutes before tea after setting the visitors a target of 252 to win, thereby registering their first outright win in the tournament. Brief Scores Mumbai (1st innings): 162 Himachal (1st innings): 246 Mumbai (2nd innings):335 for 7 decl (Agarkar 102, Sharma 4 for 95, Malik 2 for 61). Himachal (2nd innings): 166 ( Sarandeep 39, Bali 34). |
RCA ELECTIONS
Jaipur, November 20 The apex court’s direction came during hearing of a petition by Modi and 18 district cricket associations. Modi and his aides had moved the Supreme Court in view of the controversy surrounding the list of office-bearers of the district cricket associations. As per the list released by the RCA’s ad-hoc committee, Modi, CP Joshi and Mahesh Joshi were not eligible to contest the elections on some technical grounds. The RCA’s nine-member ad-hoc committee on December 13 issued a notification which said that only the office-bearers elected on or before November 3 were eligible to contest the RCA polls. CP Joshi was elected treasurer of Rajsamand Cricket Association on November 7 while his election was reported to RCA on November 13. Similarly, Mahesh Joshi was recently elected as treasurer of Jaipur Cricket Association. “The new provisions in the RCA constitution lay down that only domiciles of Rajasthan can contest the RCA election. A candidate should not be an office-bearer of cricket associations of other states and he should have completed a full term in one of the top posts of the district association. These conditions have been included to prevent a few specific person from contesting the polls,” said Mehmood Abdi, a Modi aide who is fighting against the ad hoc body in Sriganganagar District Association where he held the post of president. Though Modi’s name figures as the president of Nagaur District Cricket Association, he cannot contest the elections as he also holds the post of vice-president of Punjab Cricket Association. Regarding the eligibility of Joshi duo, the ad-hoc committee said their respective cricket associations didn’t give an official intimation to it regarding their appointment to the post of treasurer. |

New Delhi, November 20 “I am 100 per cent certain Sandeep will play in the World Cup. How can you decide about whether a player would be in the World Cup team three months before the tournament,” Mattoo told reporters here during the Presenting Partner agreement signing function between Steel Authority of India Limited and International Hockey Federation. “He will be there in the team. He had a back injury but he has come out of that. Sandeep will also play in Champions Challenge,” he added. Sandeep’s participation in both the events came under cloud after chief coach Jose Brasa earlier this week said that the back injury, which he sustained during last month’s Canada tour, will see the drag-flicker out of both Champions Challenge to be held in Salta, Argentina, from December 6 to 13. FIH defends
postponing HI polls
International Hockey Federation today defended extending the deadline for Hockey India’s elections but also asserted that India would be barred from next year’s World Cup if they fail to put in place a democratically elected body by the end of January. FIH President Leandro Negre said HI was given time till January end to settle all the affiliation issues of the state units to form a unified body keeping in mind the enormous paperworks involved in the process. “India is a vast country, so problems will always be there and it needs time to merge all the states together,” Negre said today. —
