Tourist buzz back in Rajaji
Haridwar, November 17 The park, which was officially inaugurated on November 15 by state Cabinet Minster for Forest Vijaya Barthwal, will be opened till June 15, 2010. Notably, this time a new range in the park has been opened for tourists. The Chillawali range, which was restricted for tourists’ movement since 1984 for security reasons, is now opened. Now the tourists and animal lovers can see animals residing in the Chillawali range from the Mohand range. Chillawali range officer Dinesh Uniyal said ticket system had been priced at Rs 20 for children, Rs 40 for adults and Rs 100 for four-wheelers. For safari caravan in the park, the fee per person was Rs 40. Those who wanted to ride in their vehicles would be charged Rs 100, in addition to per person fare of Rs 40, while for foreigners per person charge would be Rs 350. Private jeeps and taxi rate had been increased by Rs 100 and these would now have to furnish Rs 800 instead of the previous Rs 700 in addition to per person charge of Rs 40. Special tourist buses plied by RNP would charge Rs 150 per person, while for foreign tourists Rs 550 would be the bus fare. This time citing the destruction and pollution done by tourists, the park administration is quite strict on tourists polluting the park. As the park administration wants the park area polythene-free, so this time will be tourists will be strictly charged for per item and things they take in the park zone. At the entry gate itself, on the basis of articles, security money will have to be deposited and this will be returned only when all items, including mineral water bottles, food packets and other things, are brought back by them. This is being done so as tourists don’t leave any material inside the park which pollutes or destroys the flora fauna inside as well is dangerous for animals. Chila ranger MS Negi said last year this scheme was started to keep park safe from harmful polythene and other toxic materials. It was quite effective. This time too it was being seen that not a single tourist went scot free in the jungle with these harmful items. Also special sign boards are put up at the entry gates to generate environment awareness among tourists. Vigil in the park has
been increased while special security measures have been put at sensitive areas. So, with winter season setting in, this is the best time to be in the park and enjoy the variety of animals and birds, specially Asian |
A first, Razia makes it twice to Bar Council
Dehradun, November 17 Her achievement becomes all the more important if we take into account the almost negligible representation of women in India in the different bar councils. The Bar Council is a powerful body that looks after the interest of lawyers and works for their welfare. There are a total of 8,022 advocates who are enrolled in the Uttarakhand Bar Council which has 20 elected members. Hailing from a conservative Muslim family, a sound academic career was of immense help. “There is no representation of women lawyers in these councils and when I stood for elections this year, I went on a whirlwind tour of the state meeting lawyers asking for support,” said Razia Beig. “It was easier the second time. The work done by me in my previous stint in 2004 stood me in good stead. Mind you, I did not spend a penny. “Though I must tell you that, like other elections, here too the power of wealth is all pervasive,” asserted Beig. Today, there are no dearth of cases for Razia to handle. Even in preparation for her cases, grit and determination have played a major role in transforming an unsure student of law who came with a lot of expectations from Old Tehri in Garhwal to Dehradun in 1991 into a seasoned lawyer of repute. She has handled several high-profile criminal cases which include the State versus Nadim case the acquittal in which took place in 2009 and the year-long Margub murder case. But things were never rosy. From fighting for a chamber to set up an office at the District Collectorate to earning the confidence of a client, it meant learning and relearning at every step. “The early days were full of struggle. There were days when I did not have work. Women lawyers in the early ’90s could be counted on the fingertips. Though now times have changed, but still it is difficult to set up a practice in a day. “One has to evolve one’s own model code of conduct. For example, I never meet the second party while handling a case. Above all, demand a price for your services. In this aspect, women are a little hesitant,” explained Razia. During her previous stint, she recounts several steps taken by the council in the interest of lawyers; prominent among them were the setting-up of Uttarakhand Bar Council, sorting of financial and asset cases that were taken up after the division of Uttar Pradesh and launching of welfare schemes for lawyers. A little dismayed by the way the reputation of lawyers and the profession have eroded over the years, she said, “The delivery system has failed due to long-pending cases. The layman has lost faith in us and we need to introspect in order to win back their confidence”. |
Now, noodles as Shiva’s prasad
Dehradun, November 17 “We believe that whatever we consume during meals - rice, vegetables or lentils - should be first offered to God as ‘bhog’. There is no compulsion to offer only sweets to the Almighty. We believe in serving mankind, therefore, we distribute prasad which devotees like,” said Chiranjeev Das, a volunteer at the temple. “Initially, the temple was made for the personal use by our swamiji, but later, it was opened for public,” he added. About 4,000 to 5,000 devotees from far-flung and nearby areas come daily to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva. Swami Shivdas had laid the foundation of the temple 17 years ago. Apart from prasad, the temple also serves bhandara to its devotees 24x7. Tea is also served as prasad in the mornings and evenings. Unlike normal temples, offerings in the form of money are prohibited in the Shiv Mandir. “I’ve been serving at the temple for the past four-five years. It is delightful to be part of the mandir and witness a huge crowd every day. We have a group of people that prepares food for the bhandara,” said a prasad distributor. Another attraction is the variety of precious or semi-precious gemstones, pearls, Rudraksh, Shriyantras, ornaments and traditional ittar (perfumes) that are sold in the temple premises. The temple, which is away from the hustle-bustle of the city, is well known for the scenic beauty it is surrounded with. The bright-red building of the temple with flags on the top looks quite fascinating and mesmerises tourists and visitors going to Mussoorie to make a halt at the shrine. |

Inclusion of Kumaoni dialect in Constitution sought
Pitthoragarh, November 17 “The Kumoani language which is spoken by more then 50 lakh people of the country and is a rich language from literary point of view also is worth being included in the 8th Schedule,” said president of the samiti Praveen Singh Karmiyal. A three-day congregation of Kumoani-loving people was also attended by cabinet minister Prakash Pant, besides the legends of Kumoani poetry Sher Da Anpar, Gananand Pandey, Gopal Dutt Bhatt and Mathura Dutt Mathpal, publisher of “Dudboli”, a monthly periodical of Kumoani language. “The local languages should be given a status in the Constitution and the Kumoani language should be made mandatory in schools in the states,” said Mathpal. A nine-point resolution demanding the promotion of Kumoani writers and poets through the state incentive and awarding the best creations of the year, besides inclusion of Kumoani in 8th Schedule was passed in the congregation of Kumoani writers from across the country and handed over to Pant to be forwarded to the government of India with recommendations of the Uttarakhand government. “We want the Kumoani language to be linked with employment because until a language is capable to get employment, it cannot be accepted by the educated people, as the people of Chhattisgarh are running a TV channel in local language and the same can be done in Uttarakhand,” said Gopal Dutt Bhatt, a veteran poet of Kumoani language. The congregation also started a Rs 5,001 award to a veteran Kumoani poet every year. This year award was given to Gopal Dutt Bhatt. “Right from 1790, when Lok Ratna Pant ‘Gumani’ emerged as a Kumoani poet, the language has been enriched by hundred of writers and poets since then and it deserved a status in the Constitution,” said Hayat Singh Rawat, one of the organisers. |
