Himalayan Bird Count takes off
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, November 7
Uttarakhand Forest Minister Bisan Singh Chufal today flagged off the second “Himalayan Bird Count - Winter of 2009” while calling for the promotion of birding activity in the state.

Chufal said forest fires continue to pose the biggest threat to avian fauna and that protecting forests from fires should always be high on the priority list. He said it was a matter of concern that the forest-rich state of Uttarakhand hardly gets budget allocations in accordance with the quantum of its forest wealth.

Rajendra Dobhal, Chairman, Uttarakhand Council of Science and Technology, said it was imperative that the habit of bird watching be inculcated in the younger generation as a part-time activity and it would also cater to larger conservation needs.

Earlier, the Action and Research for Conservation in Himalayas (ARCH) Founder President Prateek Panwar said the Himalayan Bird Count has received tremendous response from the participants who come from all parts of the country. He said the count was attracting tourism attention to the state.

At the initiative of the Action and Research for Conservation in Himalayas, the exercise has this time planned bird counting on the 36 most popular trekking trails situated in the valleys of Tons, Yamuna, Bhagirathi, Bhilangna, Mandakini, Ganga and Alaknanda rivers.

Encounter-rate baseline data generation and conservation awareness activities specially designed to sensitise the youth from urban and rural areas of the state will be high on agenda among bird watchers.

As many as 70 eminent bird watchers, conservationists and upcoming birders and 150 rural youths from Uttarakhand will be participating in the activity. The count will conclude on November 10.

Dr Bharat Bhushan

Dehradun, November 7
The thirst to search the Himalayan quail seems to have brought an Environment Planning Officer to Uttarakhand. This elusive galliform (Himalayan quail) has not been recorded with certainty since 1876 and continues to generate much interest among avid bird watchers.

And definitely, Dr Bharat Bhushan, a professor at Yashwantrao Chavan Academy of Development Administration, is no ordinary bird watcher but has to his credit the rediscovery of a bird in Andhra Pradesh that was last sighted little less than 200 years back.

As the second Great Himalayan Bird Count - Winter of 2009 begins in Uttarakhand, Dr Bharat Bhushan is among the 70-odd eminent bird watchers, conservationists and upcoming birders from across the country and has his eyes set on the Himalayan quail.

Very few know that Dr Bharat Bhushan rediscovered Jerdon’s Courser, a bird that was spotted after 187 years.

It took over two years for Dr Bhushan to finally spot the bird in the Lankamalai area, now a protected zone in Cuddapah district of Andhra Pradesh, in January 1986.

At that time, Jerdon’s Courser was being considered as possibly extinct by many a bird watcher and the case of the Himalayan quail is no different. But Bhushan is hopeful that ‘Sano Kalo Titro’, as this quail is known is the local dialect, is very much in existence.

“There have been no fool-proof surveys to track the Himalayan quail and I am hopeful that, if not today, at least some local will some day be able to spot the bird,” said a confident Dr Bhushan, who is also carrying sketches of the bird to ensure better identification by locals.

Searches, so far, have been conducted with a tourist mindset and that is not conducive to a bird search which involves a large amount of time. He said the way to find the Himalayan quail certainly goes though the denizens.

“Taking locals into confidence will reap rich dividends and their involvement in these searches is a must as they are most suited to track down this elusive bird,” said Bhushan, a former member of the Bombay Natural History Society, Mumbai.

The Bird Life International had some years earlier strongly advocated a well-planned survey of the apparently suitable habitat of the Himalayan quail in the lower Himalayan ranges through the use of remote sensing and satellite data followed by ground surveys for tracking down the quail.

The Union Environment Ministry’s latest directive a couple of weeks back had asked the state government to work for the protection of Ophrysia Superciliosa, commonly known as Himalayan quail.

The Himalayan quail has generated much interest among orthinologists being last seen over a century ago. Even its specimens are only with British and Spanish museums.

Autumn Fest: Local artistes rule third day

Nainital, November 7
The third day at the ongoing Autumn Festival saw local talent taking the audience by the storm. Be it the catwalk on the ramp or the rendition of folk songs and dances, local artistes performed with an enthusiasm and confidence that was no different from the presentations being given by artistes from the film and television industry.

The evening was set alight with an hour-long fashion show that showcased the latest apparel in khadi. The models walked the ramp displaying the new collection prepared under the aegis of the Khadi Board. These items ranged from evening gowns to overcoats to a whole range of apparels in khadi silk that is increasingly becoming famous and popular, not only in India but also abroad. The message underlying the show was to persuade more and more people to adopt khadi so that maximum people get a livelihood out of the increasing sales.

The tune to another gala evening of song and dance was set by an excellent performance by the team of Sur Bharti in Haldwani. They presented a panorama of Kumaoni songs and dances and even a Nepali dance. Having started the presentation with the soulful rendition of Sarveshvari Jagdeshwari in a dance format, the team presented the famous Jhora and Chanchari songs, which are very popular in the Kumaoni culture.

The stage was then taken over by artistes from the TV industry Saloni Gangubai and Rajeev Thakur who regaled the audience with skits and mimicry of voices belonging to noted singer Lata Mangeshkar, actor Amitabh Bachchan and Congress President Sonia Gandhi.

But the real stars of the night were Irfan Ali and Priyani Vani who presented a variety of songs, both old and new. Both compelled the audience to dance by presenting fast numbers the musical scores of which had been given by RD Burman.

Irfan started his performance with an old Mohammad Rafi number “Chahunga main tujhe sanjh savere” and followed it up with the lilting “Chhaiyan chhaiyan” number from “Dil Se”. Thereafter, he presented a medley of songs of RD Burman that included the all-time hit “Mehbooba, mehbooba” from “Sholay”, “Dil lena khel hai dil dar ka” from “Zamane Ko Dikhana Hai” and “Yamma yamma” from “Shaan”.

Priyani on the other hand started with the old Lata track “Bicchua” from the classic “Madhumati” and moved on to sing “Kanchi re kanchi re” from “Hare Rama Hare Krishna”.

She ended the round with a medley of RD Burman’s songs.

The evening also saw item girl Muskan dancing to the tunes from new Hindi film songs.

Nainital’s first festival of parallel cinema begins

Nainital, November 7
Nainital’s first festival of parallel cinema got off to a start with the screening of MS Sathyu’s classic “Garam Hawa”. Entitled Pratirodh Ka Cinema, the festival will see the screening of some of the classics, along with a large number of documentaries and short films on varied subjects.

The event got rolling with the presentation of revolutionary songs by artistes from Yugmanch, a local cultural organisation that has been promoting cultural activities in the town for 30 years. The artistes began with the song “Tu zinda hai, tu zindagi ki jeet par yakeen kar, agar kahin hai swarg toh utar la zamin par”, to a massive response from the audience.

Addressing the audience, Zahoor Alam of Yugmanch said, “This is a novel experiment which we have started. Our aim is to make people aware of issues and develop a thought process”.

The event is being organised by the Yugmanch in collaboration with the Jansanskriti Manch. A senior functionary of the Jansanskriti Manch Sanjay Joshi said, “We have been holding similar festivals in various towns of the country. We are averse to taking any sponsorship either from corporate or other organisations. These are being held with the help of funds contributed by the public. It is an attempt to protect the interests of people belonging to marginalised societies”.

Pranay Krishna of the Jansanskriti Manch said, “The number of people’s movements has increased manifold over the past several years following attacks on their means of livelihood and survival. The question faced by societies is whether such movements take the shape of a common platform. The artistes have a major role to play in this direction, particularly in the face of the indirect attacks launched against masses by the system.

The event was formally inaugurated by noted poet Girish Tewari, who is fondly known as Girda in the region. He also released a souvenir to mark the occasion.

A small film, “Gaon Nahin Chodab”, was screened at the beginning of the event. The film talks of plundering the natural wealth of adivasi-inhabited areas in the name of development.

The Balraj Sahni-starrer “Garam Hawa” drew a good response. The film revolves around a Muslim family that decides to stay back in India after Partition. It deals with the complex issues it has to face while coming to terms with the emerging socio-economic structure in a communally surcharged atmosphere.
