SL Tour of India 3rd Test
Colombo, November 29 “I am 37-years-old and I can't bowl as much as those days because after 15-16 overs I get tired. But I will try and play a little bit of one-day cricket that's only 10 overs to bowl. If I find everything is not going well I might retire from both forms of the game before the World Cup,” Muralitharan said. “Everything depends on how much my body can take. My body may hold for one-day cricket because it's a fifty-over game. In Test cricket it's a little bit harder because I have always been a threat to other sides. At the moment it's not looking like that because others are playing me well. I think I made the right decision to retire from Test cricket at the end of the West Indies series next year,” he was quoted as saying by 'The Nation'. Gambhir regains number one spot
Dubai: Indian opener Gautam Gambhir regained the number one spot but veterans Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman lost ground in the International Cricket Council's Test Rankings, issued today. Gambhir returned to the number one spot after his eighth career century helped India record an innings and 144 runs victory over Sri Lanka in the second Test in Kanpur. Gambhir, the ICC Test Player of Year, scored 167 and featured in a 233-run first wicket stand with Virender Sehwag who has also climbed four places to return to the top-20 in 19th place. Zaheer, Vijay have extended net session
Mumbai: Indian speedster Zaheer Khan and reserve opener Murali Vijay had an extended net session at the Brabourne Stadium, CCI here today ahead of their third Test against Sri Lanka starting on December 2. The duo, under the watchful eyes of coach Gary Kirsten, spent nearly two hours at the nets. Vijay, not selected for the first two Tests in the ongoing series against Lanka, is likely to replace opener Gautam Gambir in the squad for the third Test, after the latter opted out following his sister's marriage. Meanwhile, the visitors preferred to have a day off. We have to come back strong: Lanka manager
The Sri Lanka team arrived here today and will start their preparations for the final cricket Test against India from Monday after taking an off tomorrow. The third Test will begin from December 2 at the Brabourne Stadium. "We have just landed in Mumbai. We are taking a day off tomorrow and then will start practising from Monday morning. We have to regroup and come back strong in the third Test," team manager Brendon Kuruppu told PTI. Lukewarm ticket sales
Test cricket is returning to Brabourne Stadium after more than three and a half decades and India are 1-0 up going into the final game of the three-match series against Sri Lanka on December 2, but public response for the tie has been lukewarm. According to sources there are very few takers for the tickets for the match with most clubs and gymkhanas affiliated to the MCA showing little interest in picking up their quota. Around 330-odd clubs/gymkhanas are affiliated to the MCA.

Experts hail ministry directive on ‘age frauds’
Bathinda, November 29 From the numerous complaints regarding flouting of age limit norms in all national level tournaments, whatever the discipline may be, it can be safely surmised that this malady had spread its tentacles wide and deep and was eating into the very ethos of sport in India, forcing the Sports Ministry to take this decision to catch “age frauds”. Said Pargat Singh Director (Sports), Punjab, “The bizzare attitude of sportspersons trying to participate in lower age categories is a sure pointer to the fact that Indian sport suffers more from shrinking moral and ethical values rather than any lack of genius or infrastructure. In fact, cases of forgery in age certificates have also come to light. What is appalling in this snowballing development is the active involvement of parents, coaches, heads of institutions and most regrettably the municipal authorities empowered to prepare age certificates. Some young sportspersons have two to three sets of different age certificates.” Obviously, the motivating force for players taking part in age categories not meant for them is the lust for victory and the honours that go with it. Said Ramandeep Singh, Director (Sports), PAU, Ludhiana and the man who led the Indian hockey team in the 2000 Sydney Olympics, “ The end results do not always measure in the same way. An overage player, armed with a ‘manufactured’ certificate, participating in a lower-age category performs better than the rest. However when the same player moves over to the upper-age category, he is trapped in a morass of his own making, for competition becomes stiff and disillusionment sets in. Examples abound of many young sportspersons, labelled ‘prodigies’ simply fading into oblivion after having raised a glimmer of hope early in their careers.” Teja Singh Dhaliwal, secretary, Punjab Basketball Association said, “Any law or rule may not help eradicate this evil. Indeed, what is needed is a genuine change of heart towards the rules of age-limit competitions. But then, the moot question is who will bell the cat? Will it be the parents, heads of institutions, coaches or their municipal authorities? It is anybody’s guess. The sooner it happens the better it will be for Indian sport.” |
RCA POLLS: No final verdict yet on CP Joshi
Jaipur, November 29 According to sources, SC-appointed poll observer Justice Kasliwal is yet to sign the order regarding his decision on eligibility of Joshi to contest the elections and incorporating 126 new individual members in the voters list. On Friday, election officer Bihari Lal Gupta had told mediapersons that the objections of the RCA’s ad-hoc committee challenging the candidature of Joshi were “rejected”, which meant that Joshi could contest the elections. However, even after two days the copy of the decision was not made public as Gupta said it was yet to be signed. “The decision has not been signed by Justice Kasliwal. I can’t say whether there will be any changes or not. However, correction cannot be ruled out till it is duly signed. Apart from other objections, the ad-hoc committee too had filed a plea to review the decision of giving voting rights to 126 new members. The next hearing is scheduled for Monday and the verdict on all the objections will be announced then,” said Gupta. Apart from giving a green signal to Joshi's candidature, Kasliwal had also rejected the objections raised by Dhaulpur, Alwar and Pali district cricket associations even as he incorporated 126 new individual members on the voters list. These members were allowed to vote, apart from 59 old individual members, though their votes will not be counted as the matter is pending with the Supreme Court. Most of these 126 new individual members belong to the IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi's camp. |
English Premier League
London, November 29 Tottenham Hotspur drew 1-1 with Aston Villa at Villa Park in the late game to leapfrog Arsenal and go third in the standings on 26 points, while Manchester City remain sixth on 22 after they were held 1-1 at home by struggling Hull City to record a Premier League record seventh successive draw. West Ham United beat Burnley 5-3 while Wigan Athletic bounced back from last week's 9-1 hammering at Spurs by beating Sunderland 1-0. Rooney earned the headlines with his treble but in truth the England striker, along with several of his United team mates, otherwise had a quiet game. Portsmouth, who have beaten United and drawn with them at Fratton Park in the last two seasons as well as knocking them out of the FA Cup at Old Trafford last year, were the better team for much of the first half in their first game under manager Avram Grant following the midweek sacking of Paul Hart. — Reuters |
AIFF to appoint I-League CEO
Kolkata, November 29 Other matters on the agenda include constitution of a new I-League Committee, discussion on views by state associations on the question of allowing five foreigners, including a PIO and an Asian player, in the I-League club rolls. “The main matters on the agenda are on I-League CEO's post, Federation Cup final round draw, discussion on the five foreigner issue, I-League review and the senior national and Under-23 side camps in Goa,” Subrata Dutta said.
