SL Tour of India2nd Test: Day 4 Kanpur, November 27 The visitors began 57 for four and did their best to delay the inevitable before the Indians polished off the remnants of the Lankan resistance to complete a facile win with more than four sessions to spare. Sri Lankans, who managed 229 in the first innings, did slightly better in their second essay, folding for 269. India thus became the sixth nation to win 100 Test matches, following Australia (332), England (310), West Indies (152), South Africa (120) and Pakistan (102). This was also India’s biggest victory margin against the Lankans, in terms of innings. The previous mark was their thrashing of the islanders by an innings and 119 runs in the 1994 Lucknow Test. With six wickets separating the Lankans from a defeat and two full days at India’s disposal, the islanders’ capitulation was just a matter of time and the four wickets they lost in the morning session only hastened their end. Mellowed Sree augurs well for us: Dhoni
India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni today described S Sreesanth as one of the best reverse swing exponents in contemporary cricket and said the Kerala speedster’s mellowed down ‘avatar’ augurs well for the team. Back from 19 months of international wilderness, Sreesanth’s five-wicket haul in the first innings pushed Sri Lanka into follow-on and India thumped the islanders inside four days to win the second cricket Test here today. “He definitely has cut down (on his antics). Hopefully he would maintain that. As long as he does not cross the line, it’s good not just for him personally but also for the team.” We can equalise series in Mumbai: Sangakkara
Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara conceded Muttiah Muralitharan’s slump in form has become a worry for the team but sounded confident of squaring the three-match series when they take on India in the final Test in Mumbai. “We still have got a lot to achieve in Mumbai,” an optimistic Sangakkara told reporters after his team crashed to their heaviest defeat against India in the second Test here. Gambhir to miss 3rd Test

CWG: AITA’s foreign coach proposal dunked
Bathinda, November 27 However that proposal of hiring the world top ranked coaches has now been put on the back burner by the Sports Ministry and the SAI citing the reason “that both these coaches are too expensive for the ministry to pay for. ”With the sports ministry declining AITA’s request, the Association has now decided to ask the ministry to let it hire a physical trainer to be with the Indian players. The trainer apart from imparting physical training to Leander Paes, Mahesh Bhupati and Sania will also train Indian physical trainers whenever these players are playing abroad. It may be mentioned here that SAI and the ministry have formulated a policy under which a foreign coach can be paid $5000 a month. All foreign coaches recruited by National Sports Federations (NSF) to train their teams are getting precisely that amount and not a penny more. However, sources revealed that the ministry had to dole out anything between $500 to 900 per day to either of the coaches-Sanchez and Roche. Keeping the “extraordinary high salary” demanded by these coaches, the sports ministry was quick to nip in the bud AITA’s “high profile” proposal. Said an AITA official, “The salary fixed by SAI to pay foreign coaches attached with various NSF’s may be all right. However, when it comes to hiring top drawer tennis coaches, this amount is peanuts.” |
Govt guidelines on age-tampering
New Delhi, November 27 "In order to ensure fair play, it is imperative that stringent action is taken against athletes found guilty of committing age fraud and also against the abettors", the Ministry communication said. The Ministry said steps against age fraud were on the same lines as anti-doping measures as both amounted to cheating. The salient points of the guidelines to check cheating in age are: The national sports federations should introduce a system of issuing identity cards to national athletes, containing all the details of the concerned athlete; The identity card should be made only after the concerned federation fully satisfied itself about the date birth of the player; The federations should also maintain a record of the age of the athletes on its rolls; Random age verification, medical examination and banning of athletes committing age-frauds are some of the other measures suggested in the guidelines. |
Punjab secure maiden victory Amit Khanna Tribune News Service Mohali, November 27 The visitors Gujarat had a full day to negotiate with only three wickets in hand when they started their campaign on the fourth day today. Punjab pacers denied the visitors any slice of respect and settled the issue within a span of 25 runs. Gujarat could only manage 252 in the second innings and lost by an innings and 32 runs. Manpreet Gony tasted success with the third delivery of the day by forcing a thick outside edge off Rujul Bhatt and Chandan Madan did the rest. It was a heartbreak for Bhatt as he could only add three to his overnight score of 93 and fell short of what could have been a well deserved ton. With his dismissal, it was only a matter of time before Punjab sealed the issue in their favour. Leg spinner Rahul Sharma sent back Yadav with a beauty and Punjab needed one more to secure the maiden win of the season. The end finally came in the 19th over of the day with last man Patel’s timber being castled by an Harmeet Bansal inswinger. “We have found the winning combination and will not tinker with in the next match. Boys played to a plan and I am happy we played good cricket on all four days consistently. We have our focus now on the next match with Orissa,” said visibly relieved Punjab coach Bhupinder Singh Sr. Love Ablish with his seven wicket haul in the match was the pick of the bowlers for Punjab. Though, Gony and Love took seven wickets a piece, Ablish proved more effective with his tight line, length and economy. Visitors did not have many positives to draw from a lacklusture performance in both the innings and former India wicket keeper Parthiv Patel led side will have plenty to think of in the days to come if they want to stay in the hunt for a place in top three this season. Gujarat lock horns with Railways next from December 1. Brief Scores: Gujarat: 160 and 252 (Rujul Butt 95; Manpreet Gony 4/105, Harmeet Singh 3/28) Punjab 1st innings: 444. TN thump Himachal by 91 runs Pacer Chandrasekar Ganapathy wrecked Himachal Pradesh with a five-wicket haul to set up a 91-run victory for Tamil Nadu in their Ranji Trophy Super League Group A match. Ganapathy (5/61) ripped through the Himachal top order to bundle out the hosts for 155 in just 47.4 overs. Brief Scores: Tamil Nadu: 293 for 8 decl and 319 all out (Subramaniam Badrinath 50, Ravichandran Ashwin 51; Vikramjeet Malik 3/80, Kuldeep Diwan 3/65). Himachal 1st innings: 366 all out and 155 all out in 47.4 (Vikramjeet Malik 45, Chandrasekar Ganapathy 5/61, L Balaji 4/29). |
