Corbett waits for its new guest Shankar
Dehradun, December 20 A high profile African elephant Shankar was gifted by the Zimbabwe to the then President Shankar Dayal Sharma. The other two Delhi zoo's residents Asiatic pachyderms, Rajlakshmi and Hira too are proposed to be shifted to the Corbett. Wild Trust of India Dr AK Singh who has his opinion admits that while welfare of elephants was certainly paramount, the improvement in the conditions of zoos should also be taken up in priority. He said Zoo too kept an importance. “Zoos definitely have a purpose, which cannot be altogether be ruled out. They are most ideal to be used as rescue centre and even breeding centers,” AK Singh pointed out. He argued that CZA could also have issued directives to improve conditions within zoos as mere asking for shifting out the elephant to parks and sanctuaries could be a mammoth exercise and also a challenging one. “Even while shifting the pachyderms inside parks, CZA must ensure the park keep necessary arrangements to ensure their upkeep,” he added. Howsoever, Corbett authorities in Uttarakhand, who are anxiously awaiting for the new guests said they were yet to receive an official intimation on part of Delhi zoo authorities. African elephants are very rare and are housed at Mysore zoo apart from Delhi. There are nearly 150 elephants in zoos across the country. CZA had said the surroundings in the zoos were not conducive for pachyderms and directed for immediate shifting of these elephants to park to give them enough space. |
Parties using textbooks to promote own agenda, says reformist
Dehradun, December 19 The political leaders in pursuance of their narrow brand of politics are using the textbooks to promote their kind of agenda, poisoning the minds of children, instead of enlightening them. “Mutilated facts, coloured perceptions are all there in the books. Both the Congress and the BJP have done it during their tenures. Unfortunately, we do not know how to resolve the dilemma. The tendency to present one’s own version of history has been resorted to several countries in the past. In my view, modern democracies can put in place checks and balances, so that a balanced and fact-based view emerges,” said Dr Asghar Ali Engineer, a renowned Muslim scholar, thinker and reformist. In the city to participate in a workshop today, Dr Asghar was talking to The Tribune. However, he reposed faith in the Indian people and their pluralistic views. “Despite the blows delivered by the communal forces now and then, secularism will continue to thrive in India with space for divergent viewpoints. In spite of the Mumbai riots and Gujarat carnage, the roots of pluralism are far too strong and deep in the country,” opined Dr Asghar. On the question of the quality of Muslim political leadership in India and other parts of the world, He said it had failed to live up to the expectations of the Muslims. “The fractious and fragmented leadership is on a power trip and guided by self-interest only. They have failed to work for the interest of the Muslims in the country. Even in Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, there is a crisis of leadership. For years, the Muslim world has been giving lip-service to the interest of the Palestinians but still they are being killed, there is no solution in sight,” emphasised Dr Asghar. Adding that Saudis have consolidated their hold in the world by opening up madrasas and have seldom built technical or modern education institutions. The renowned scholar, who stood up against the Bohra clergy, was emphatic that there was a great benefit in education and the Muslims could reap dividends if they applied themselves to acquiring technical education. “There should never be an iota of doubt in the minds of the Muslims about pursuing education. They can follow a middle path by giving top priority to education and not abandoning their religious practices,” he said. On the misconceptions about Islam being perpetuated after the bombing of World Trade Center, Dr Asghar said a majority of Muslims are against violence. They may be at the receiving end of the backlash but there is no reason that they should resort to violence. “Modern democracies offer a path of dialogue and justice. Solutions can be tried out within these parameters,” emphasised Dr Asghar. |
