India hope to regain lead

Cuttack, December 20
With their charismatic captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni serving a two-match ban, the Indian cricket team under stand-in skipper Virender Sehwag will have to pull out all the stops to regain their lead when they lock horns with Sri Lankan in the third one-dayer here tomorrow.

As if poor fielding and bowling were not bad enough, the home side received a rude jolt when their inspirational skipper and last match centurion Dhoni was handed a two-match ban for the team's slow-over rate in the second ODI in Nagpur.

In Dhoni's absence, Tamil Nadu keeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik has been drafted into the side to do the duties behind the stumps, while S Sreesanth, who is recovering from swine flu, has been replaced with Ishant Sharma. Not that Sri Lanka didn't have their share of injuries.

All-rounder Angelo Mathews, who braved pain to guide the side to a series-equalling three-wicket win in Nagpur, strained the right quadricep muscle in Nagpur and has returned home. Earlier the visitors had lost champion spinner Muttiah Muralitharan and paceman Dilhara Fernando to finger injuries.

Dilshan's form keeps Sehwag worried

Tillakaratne Dilshan's sizzling form worries Virender Sehwag but the stand-in India skipper is confident that his pacers would remove the Sri Lankan danger-man early in the third one dayer here tomorrow.

“It’s very difficult to stop somebody who is in such a good form,” Sehwag said in the pre-match press conference.

“We must think of how to get him out instead of thinking about stopping him. I am sure our Zaheer (Khan), Ishant (Sharma), Praveen Kumar will work it out,” said an optimistic Sehwag.

Yuvraj likely to play

The Indian team management is tight-lipped about Yuvraj Singh's availability but chances are that explosive left-hander will play tomorrow's third one-dayer against Sri Lanka. On being asked if Yuvraj will play tomorrow, stand-in skipper Virender Sehwag said, "We will take a decision tomorrow." In today's net session, the Punjab batsman faced seamers including gangling Ishant Sharma, Sudeep Tyagi and a few other local bowlers and hit fluent shots without any trouble.

Dhoni’s absence a big blow: Sanga

With charismatic Mahendra Singh Dhoni serving a two-match ban, Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara said his Indian counterpart's absence has dealt a big blow to the home side ahead of the crucial third cricket one-dayer here tomorrow. "I hope it (Dhoni's absence) is a factor. He has been one of the players who has been in form, so obviously it's a blow to lose him,” Sangakkara told reporters after Sri Lanka's practice session here today. — PTI

Pitch and conditions

A bright, sunny day is predicted, and it won't be excessively cold at night either. Teams only one score in excess of 300, and the conditions could make for a tight game with moderate scores rather than Rajkot-like ones.

Stats and Trivia

Teams average 33.65 runs per wicket at the Barabati Stadium, the sixth-highest for grounds in India that have hosted more than 10 ODIs.

Jalandhar, December 19
Putting up a good show at the Commonwealth Wrestling Championship, India’s women wrestlers are confident of making their mark at the Commonwealth Games, 2010, for which they are undergoing rigorous training sessions at NIS, Patiala. The Indian women wrestlers won as many as twelve medals in the Free Style Women Wrestling championship. The winners, all from Haryana, maintained that this contest is a litmus test for the future.

Talking to The Tribune, Alka Tomar who won a gold in 59 Kg Women Free Style said, “The championship is a sort of pre-CWG chance for us to know the high and low points of rivals Canada who wrestle with technical skills. Especially my session with Barker Jazmyne of Canada was interesting as it was a contest between technical aspect and the strength of the Indian wrestlers”.

Though it was a close contest between Canada and India but the Cameroon girls also put up a good fight. P.R. Sondhi, chief wrestling coach said girls from Cameroon were in good form and managed to win two gold medals defeating India. “However, we are confident of a good show in the CWG by our girls”, he added.

Expecting a good medal tally at the games, Geeta another gold medallist in the 55 kg category said, “It is a do or die situation for us. We know that our performance has been good so far but at an impressive show at the Commonwealth Games would be the real test”, she added.

However the bronze medallists, not happy, were still content with their achievement. “I was expecting a gold but it was owing to an injury that my performance suffered. But, still I consider it as an opportunity to improve upon my performance”, quipped Suman Kundu who won a bronze in the 67 Kg category.

Olympic bronze-medallist Sushil Kumar said he was confident Indian wrestlers, who were in sweeping form at the Commonwealth Championship, would make a clean sweep in the upcoming Commonwealth Games. Talking to The Tribune, Sushil said: “At present our target is the Commonwealth Games for which we have a training period of 10 months. During this period more focus would be laid on improving our attacking moves. And looking at the present form of the Indian wrestlers we are sure to make a mark in these games”. Further considering the Canadian and South African wrestlers as other key contenders, he added that Indian coaches were making the entire group undergo rigorous training sessions, which would definitely help them iron out their flaws. “After the Commonwealth Games, we have all eyes set for an Olympic gold during the Olympic Games, 2012”, he added.

National Coach Yashvir Singh, who is also Sushil’s personal coach, said they were receiving good support from the government. “We are getting Rs 500 per head as food supplement, which is helping the wrestlers in staying physically fit. Apart from this we are equipped with world class facilities to train our wrestlers", he maintained.

Hopwood misses the target, SAI cancels appointment
Ravi Dhaliwal

Bathinda, December 20
The proposed appointment of renowned compound archery coach US based Ginger Hopwood by the Sports Authority of India (SAI) on the recommendation of the Archery Association of India (AAI) has hit a roadblock with the coach refusing to come to India on a work visa. Keeping in view the Indian team’s participation in Compound archery in the Commonwealth games, the AAI had decided to hire the services of Hopwood through SAI at a daily salary of $250.

However, things went awry for the coach when SAI insisted that she had to come to India on a work visa and not a tourist visa, as was requested by her. A senior AAI official said, “All arrangements had been made for Hopwood’s visit to India to train the Compound archers at Kolkata where at present there are 20 probales training for the CWG.

However, she insisted that she be given a tourist visa. SAI always recommends work visa for foreign coaches it invites on the recommendations of respective National Sports Federations (NSFs). SAI refused to recommend her name for a tourist visa citing security reasons.”

The official admitted that the AAI, with the refusal of Hopwood, was scouting for a foreign coach. An archer disclosed that Hopwood, with a rich 20 years of experience behind her, was known for using state-of-the art Dartfish video software which is a freeze-frame assessment technique that is invaluable in observing and assessing problem areas from close angles. AAI officials had approached the international body-FITA- for a good coach.

FITA in turn had recommended Hopwood’s name. However, now things are back to square one with the AAI once again on the look out for a coach to train probables for the Commonwealth games. Earlier in June this year, AAI had recruited Australian coach Peter Feeney at a monthly salary of $5000 to impart training. However, after just three months Feeney fell out with the AAI officialdom and the official version given at that time was that “Feeney’s performance was not matching the AAI’s expectations.”
