India look to take charge

Nagpur, December 17
After the high-scoring humdinger in Rajkot, India will seek to overcome their bowling and fielding shortcomings when they go into the second cricket one-dayer against Sri Lanka here tomorrow with Yuvraj Singh being a doubtful starter.

Yuvraj sat out of the first game because of a finger injury and it remains to be seen whether the dashing left hander was fit enough to take the field in what promises to be another run feast. Both the teams are struggling with injuries with India having worries on the fitness of Yuvraj and the dangerous Virender Sehwag who had hurt his knee in the last game but was expected to play.

Lanka will be without key spinner Muttiah Muralitharan and paceman Dilhara Fernando due to finger injuries as the duo has been ruled out of the series. The Lankan team management have called up new players – medium pacer Muthumudalige Pushpakumara and young off spinner Suraj Randiv – to bolster their bowling ahead.

The visitors are though confident that sling-arm bowler Lasith Malinga would be available to play after his indisposition that kept him out of the Rajkot match. The two teams were totally drained after playing out a heart-stopping and energy sapping opening match at Rajkot where the hosts just about managed to pull off a thrilling victory to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

Fielding is Dhoni’s worry

Concerned over the continuously dipping standard of their fielding, Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni today urged his teammates not to spill at least the sitters when they clash with Sri Lanka in the second ODI here. The butter-fingered Indian fielders have put up a messy show in the last few international matches and Dhoni said it was time for improvement.

"At international level we were fielding well in patches and not dropping catches. You may drop the odd difficult catch but straightforward chances need to be taken. In the last three-four games we have dropped a lot of regulation catches.

Of course it is a botheration," Dhoni said.

"At the same time it will be solved at some point of time because of the effort that we are putting in. We are hoping we don't drop catches in this game," the captain added.

Dhoni was though happy with the way Indian pace bowlers performed in tense moments of the thrilling first one-dayer.

"It was one of the best in the past one year. I have always said we had not been very consistent with the death bowling. In the last game, in the last five overs we gave away only 27 runs. It was a very good effort.

"Ashish (Nehra) bowled five overs in a row. There was a bit of reverse swing going which actually helped us a bit. Overall in the last game the death bowling was fantastic," he said.

Yuvi to sit out

Already nursing a finger injury, India's middle-order batsman Yuvraj Singh has been laid low by viral flu, which may rule him out of second one-dayer against Sri Lanka here tomorrow. Yuvraj, who had also missed the opening match in Rajkot due to injury, skipped the practice session today and it is still not known if he has recovered from his finger injury.

India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni was unsure of Yuvraj's participation in tomorrow's clash but said opener Virender Sehwag was fit to play.

"Yuvraj Singh is having flu. He's having a viral infection. Till now it's flu. We did not ask him about his finger since he did not turn out on the field because of flu. We have to see how difficult it is for him to field," he said. Sehwag's participation in the second match was also under doubt as the explosive batsman had hurt his knee while fielding in the Rajkot humdinger. "Viru is fit to play as of now," Dhoni said when asked about the Sehwag's injury.

India got a scare: Mahela

Despite losing the high-scoring humdinger by a narrow margin, Sri Lanka's middle order batsman Mahela Jayawardene feels his team has thrown the gauntlet at India by coming so close to the massive home team total in the first ODI at Rajkot.

"Yes, it’s (three-run loss) a bitter pill to swallow. But there were lots of positives. Not many teams have chased down 400-plus. We have given India a good scare and that's a good positive going into this game," Jayawardene said ahead of the second match. Jayawardene did not feel that the absence of injured Muthiah Muralitharan and Dilhara Fernando has created a big problem for his team.— PTI

English Premier League
Chelsea restore three-point lead

London, December 17
Chelsea restored their three-point lead at the top of the English Premier League after a hard-fought 2-1 win over bottom side Portsmouth.

A second-half penalty from Frank Lampard secured all three points for the home side Wednesday, reopening the gap between themselves and Manchester United at the top.

Arsenal lost valuable ground on the leaders, though, as they were held to a 1-1 draw at Burnley, but Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool moved up to fifth and sixth with home wins.

Nicolas Anelka put Chelsea ahead after 23 minutes, but the Stamford Bridge crowd were stunned when Frederic Piquionne smashed in the equaliser six minutes into the second half.

But 11 minutes from time, Marc Wilson fouled Branislav Ivanovic and Lampard converted the penalty, much to the relief of manager Carlo Ancelotti, whose side had not won in four matches before Wednesday.

On a bitterly cold night, Cesc Fabregas gave Arsenal a welcome early lead at the Emirates Stadium but the Spaniard went off injured, Andre Bikey was fouled by Thomas Vermaelen and Graham Alexander scored from the spot to snatch a point.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was upset at not capitalising on his side's win at Liverpool Sunday.

At White Hart Lane, two goals from Niko Kranjcar and one by Jermain Defoe helped Tottenham got the better of big-spending Manchester City with an impressive 3-0 win.

Spurs had been shocked 1-0 at home by Wolves at the weekend and manager Harry Redknapp was pleased with the way his side bounced back.

And a nervy Liverpool side gained some respite from a recent poor run as they beat Wigan 2-1, thanks to goals from David Ngog and Fernando Torres, with Charles N'Zogbia scoring a late consolation for the visitors. The victory came on the 50th anniversary of the start of the reign of Liverpool's most famous manager, Bill Shankly. — DPA

Tiger close to cracking up: Friends

London, December 17
Friends of troubled celebrity golfer Tiger Woods fear he is close to "cracking up" after spending days alone watching cartoons and eating cereal, reports The Sun.

The many sex scandals took a toll on his career, his marriage with Elin Nordegren crumbled under reports of infidelity and he can no longer cope, say friends of the 33-year-old golf superstar.

He changed his mobile phone number the day after his late-night car crash, which sparked a stream of revelations so friends can no longer contact him, reports thesun.co.uk.

Woods is said to have locked himself in one of his two Florida homes and cannot even watch his favourite sports channel as it carries regular updates on his romps with string of lovers.

"There is a real concern among his friends that he is dealing with the situation in a very unhealthy way," said a source.

His basketball star pal Charles Barkley said: "I've been trying to get to him and can't. It's very frustrating." He wanted to tell Woods, "Hey, man, we love you. If you need anything, pick up the phone."

Elin, 29, has reportedly told friends she will file for divorce in the New Year. She had hoped to give the marriage another chance for the sake of their two kids.

Once seen as a squeaky clean athletic role model, Woods has been tainted by allegations of serial infidelities with as many as 14 women around the US, including various waitresses, nightclub hostesses and porn stars.

Woods has had a phenomenal career, earning more than $1 billion in his rapid 13-year rise, commanding huge fees for sports endorsements and revolutionising sports marketing.

Woods’ doc charged with selling illegal drugs

Toronto: After Tiger Woods, his sports doctor. Canadian sports medicine specialist Anthony Galea has been charged with selling performance-enhancing drugs to his high-profile clients. Galea, 51, who runs the Institute of Sports Medicine and Wellness Center Inc. in Toronto, was Wednesday charged by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) with selling the human growth hormone Actovegin.

Actovegin, which is derived from calf's blood, is an unapproved drug in Canada. Apart from Tiger Woods, Galea's other top clients include Olympic gold medallist Donovan Bailey and many others. He is also head physician for the Toronto Argonauts football club.

The sports doctor has also been charged with importing and exporting the unapproved drugs.

His unethical medical practice came to light in September when his assistant Mary Anne Catalano was arrested by American border officials while trying to smuggle the banned drugs into the US. According to court documents, when US border officials questioned the assistant she admitted to bringing the illegal medicines into the US on behalf of her employer.

On search of her vehicle, the border officials recovered 20 vials and 76 ampoules of unapproved drugs with misleading labels. — IANS

‘Dad’s cheating ways devastated Woods’

Tiger Woods' high-school sweetheart has revealed that the golfer was heartbroken when he discovered his father was a love cheat. Dina Parr, 34, told E! News: "He would just call crying and say, 'My dad is with another woman,' and that would be really all he could say.

"He would be so upset, so I just tried to be there for him and listen to him." Woods' dad, Earl, was divorced before he married Kultida, Tiger's mother, in 1969, reports The New York Daily News. Tiger described his dad as his "best friend and greatest role model," after he passed away in 2006. But, according to Parr, Woods never forgave his cheating dad for his infidelity.

"He loved his father," said Parr, who dated Woods for three years in the mid 1990s. "And I know that was the one thing about his dad that he could never get over. So yeah, it's interesting that it's turned out that he's doing the same thing." — ANI
