After his 13-wicket haul helped India claim the top spot in the Test rankings, the Turbanator who will be sitting it out for the two T20s, feels Sri Lanka will be back with a venegeance. On the eve of the first T20 in Nagpur, Harbhajan Singh talks to The Tribune about India’s rise, his own form, Muralitharan’s desecnt and much more.

Q: How does it feel to the top Test side?

A: It defies explanation. It is simply great to be where we are. The team has worked a lot in the last two years and proved everybody wrong. We deserve to be at the top

Q: India only played five Tests this year and there are only six lined up next year. Maintaining the status quo will be tough?

A: Our job is to play and win, irrespective of how many matches we get. What others do is not in our hands and we do not think about it. If we play to our potential nobody can beat us.

Q: India have not lost a single Test under Dhoni. The progression that started with Ganguly seems to have come to fruition.

A: Dhoni is very confident in his decisions. He infuses confidence amongst everybody. But he alone could not have done it. This is a collective effort and everybody has contributed to the team’s cause.

Q: Are there any areas where you feel the team can still improve?

A: We have raised our standards considerably in the gone two years. The boys have worked really hard to reach where we are today. But there is no time to rest on our laurels.

Q: Beating Sri Lanka convincingly must have been satisfying. What are their chances in the T20s and the ODIs?

A: It is always good to win but Sri Lanka are a very good ODI unit. They did exceedingly well to reach the finals of T20 World Cup, though I did not follow the tournament after India exited early. You can never write them off. They will come back hard at us but we are prepared for any challenge they throw.

Q: How do you rate India’s spin bowling attack?

A: India have always been blessed with world-class spinners. Pragyan Ojha and Amit Mishra have shown enough mettle in the limited opportunities they have got. It is always heartening to have talent around. Both of them are very hard working and highly skilled. Bur they need to fix short-term targets, like say 150 Test wickets, and aim to reach it.

Q: Highest wicket taker in the Lanka series with 13 wicket against your name. You skipped mentioning about your own form?

A: It is always satisfying to contribute towards the team’s cause. We bowled well, batted brilliantly when pushed to the wall. I think I did fairly well, though I still know it could have been better.

Q: Undermining Muralitharan must have been unexpected.

A: Murali is a great bowler. He has proved it time and again. This time we really played him well, and that was one of the major factors in their defeat. Viru particularly dominated him right from the word go.

Q: Though the tracks through out the series have been subject to criticism, two out of three matches produced results.

A: An ideal Test match strip should offer some purchase to the bowlers and also assist stroke making. Tracks like Motera will kill Tests. The CCI pitch was the best suited for a balanced competition and the best I have played on in long time.

Q: Gambhir has shown immense improvement in last 18 months. Any thoughts about his evolvution.

A: Gauti is the most improved player I have seen in the recent times. I remember the criticism when he came on the national scene, but the fighter that he is, he has proved everyone wrong. It is great to have him with Sehwag opening the innings.

Q: What about the coach, and the rest of the support staff?

A: Gary Kirsten does not like to come in the forefront, but the hard work put in by him and the support staff like Ram Ji, Prasad and Robin Singh is showing results. Gary is a friend who can come harsh on you if you do not work hard.

Q: Punjab team has been on a roll. Do you follow their matches?

A: Honestly, the last time I played for them in the Ranji trophy was in 2006. I do follow them whenever possible, and I know that this season they have been working very hard to produce the results. They always have my best wishes.

Ranji Trophy
Love in the air, Orissa grounded

Chandigarh, December 8
Fast bowlers do not like being hit. And if done that, they invariably strike back. After proving costly in the first two sessions, Love Ablish paid back visitors in the same coin with another five-wicket haul this season to peg Orissa back from a position of strength to end the day at 232 for the loss of seven wickets.

On the first day of their crucial Ranji Trophy “A” encounter here, Punjab skipper Dharmani won the toss and elected to field. The hosts would have hoped for some early breakthroughs with the new ball, but the opening pair of Shiv Sunder Das and Bikash Pati batted confidently and added 53 runs.

Gagandeep drew first blood in the ninth over with former India opener SS Das edging one to the wicket-keeper and Kaul making no mistake. Behera joined Pati, who by now had his eye set in. He dispatched Love thrice in one over through the cover boundary to raise his half-century. At Lunch the visitors had 101 runs for 2 on the board in just 23 overs.

After looking his own shadow in the first session, Love came into the groove in the second and struck early after the interval to send back Rakesh Mohanty. Mullick and the in-form Behera batted patiently and took the score to 175. Love struck again in the 55th over to remove Mullick with another one coming in sharply. Mullick was trapped right in front and the umpire nodded positively.

Orissa lost another wicket in Love’s next over with the score reading 184. With a full one session still to play, the visitors were shakily placed at 188 with half their team back in the hut.

Just after the Tea break, Love again jolted Orissa by claiming Halahar. Orissa had manged to reach 232 at stumps. Punjab left out Chandan Madan and Harmeet Bansal for Gagandeep Singh and Mayank Sidana. Orissa too made equal number of changes.

“Our bowlers, and Ablish in particular did well to contain Orissa after a decent start. We will look to rap-up Orissa early tomorrow and bat strongly to put a huge total on the board,” said Punjab skipper Dharmani after the match.

Brief Score:

Orissa (Ist Innings) 232 for 7 in 80.1 overs (Behera 72, Pati 52; Love 5 for 86).

J&K restrict Andhra

Brief Scores: Andhra Pradesh (287 for 8 in 90 overs; Shankara Rao 66, Sahabuddin 52; Ali 4 for 57).

Malik jolts Gujarat

Brief Score: Gujarat (1st Innings) 144 for 5 in 59 overs; Patel 57, Malik 3 for 22.

Bowlers need more adjustment from Test to T20: Dhoni

Nagpur, December 8
Indian bowlers would find it more difficult than the batsmen to make the switch from the longest to the shortest format of the game, according to Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

"It’s (switch) difficult. But if you see we had been scoring at 5 an over in the last Test we played (at Mumbai). I don’t think it would be too difficult for some of the batsmen, especially Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir", Dhoni said ahead of the first Twenty20 international against Sri Lanka.

"They actually bat in the same way. Just that they are a bit over-aggressive in T20 format, you can say," he said. Though the bowlers need to roll their arm for only four overs, an enormous effort is involved to do so in the T20 format as the batsmen would go after them from ball one, especially on Indian pitches, he said.

Muralitharan to miss opener

Sri Lanka’s star off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan is likely to miss tomorrow’s first Twenty20 International against India because of a bruised ligament injury on his fingers, visiting captain Kumar Sangakkara said today. “We don’t have any injury worries apart from Murali who is probably out of tomorrow’s Twenty20 tie because of bruised ligaments on his fingers,” Sangakkara said.— PTI
