RTI Week begins with street play
Neena Sharma
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, October 7
The Right to Information (RTI) Act can become a potent tool in the hands of the public, can encourage greater accountability and reduce corruption. This was the message of the street play “Jago” that was staged to commemorate the Right to Information Week that began today.

The play has been written and directed by Abhishek Maindola of Sambhav Vichar Manch and was staged at the Sai Institute of Paramedical and Allied Sciences. It used a mix of humour and wit while commenting on the system that refuses to change under the influence of hydra-headed bureaucracy and the failing will of the people. On the one hand is the janta (public) pitted against a system that refuses to respond to the problems of the people.

Both Raghu and Thagu learn the hard way when their plea seeking information about a water tank is turned down. Next time, they come armed with an application demanding information under the RTI.

By then, volunteers of the Sambhav Manch have managed to enlighten the minds of the villagers and, above all, Raghu and Thagu.

The member of the Sambhav Vichar Manch stresses that people can seek information about government spending on development works under RTI, provided it is not personal.

“Our motive is to raise consciousness among people, especially the youth, on the RTI. We know it is difficult to attract their attention, but it was worth the effort,” said Abhishek Maindola, director-writer of “Jago”.

Nandni in the role of “janta” and Hema in the role of the system
ably conveyed through their performances all that is missing in society that is not enlightened.
