Dehradun, September 23
“As we are concerned about the health of Dehradun residents, we are very conscious about the quality of milk and it’s products,” said Doon Milk Trader’s Association president Arvindra Kumar Gupta at a press conference here today.

However, as there have been some cases of supplying adulterated milk recently, the association declared a prize of Rs 5,000 for helping it to catch the culprits who are openly selling synthetic milk instead of pure milk.

“Though we are proud of our association members who are working for the welfare of residents, we also want to prevent people from selling adulterated milk and for this we are going to give Rs 5,000 to those who will help us catch the culprits in the city,” Gupta said.

Moreover, for checking the quality of edible items, the association has also requested the government to provide the facilities for establishing a lab. “The facilities of lab will not only lead to fair means to check the authenticity of the edible items, but also stop many from practising this sort of business. Also, if the government feels that some shopkeepers are at fault, with the help of the health officer, inspection should be proceeded and unnecessary grilling of the shopkeepers should be avoided,” added Gupta.

CM worried over low credit-deposit ratio
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, September 23
Poor credit off-take as manifested in low credit-deposit ratio has had Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank worried. So, he has asked state-level bankers committee (SLBC) to step up efforts to bring it on a par with the national average of 60 per cent.

Addressing the 30th meeting of the SLBC here today, he said an increase in the credit-deposit ratio was necessary to facilitate the creation of more self-employment opportunities and an effective implementation of welfare schemes in the hill state. “We urgently need to make efforts to meet the national mark. There is a dire need to fully achieve the target of annual credit plans of banks. In that case only, we can attain the aim of economic uplift of a majority of our population living in tough conditions in the hilly areas,” he said.

Looking at the ration since the formation of Uttarakhand, the record is not encouraging. It was 22 per cent in 2001 and increased to 35 per cent in December, 2008. It recorded a further increase of 3 per cent up to March, 2009. The total credit distribution in the state for 2008-09 was 15 per cent short of the target.

The banks had failed to achieve the target of Rs 4,428 crore last fiscal. This time the target of annual credit plan has been fixed at Rs 6,041 crore. Assuring the Chief Minister about the compliance of his instructions, Chief General Manager, SBI, Gautam Kanjilal said credit-deposit ratio was improving this fiscal.

After series of flops, Salman pulls crowds
Divya Semwal
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, September 23
Charisma of Salman Khan after a series of flops like “Hello”, “Yuvraaj”, “God Tussi Great Ho” and many other small screen shows seems to have revived with his latest Bollywood flick “Wanted”. The movie, which was released amid festivities on September 18, has got an outstanding response in Dehradun.

From the day of its release till today, people have been thronging cinemas to enjoy the movie, which is out and out a commercial film.

As a complete package, it comprises powerful dialogues, suspense, romance and eye-catching action by action director Vijayan. The action is proving a strong point of the film. However, the spirit of festivals around the corner is also attracting people to visit cinemas with friends and family.

“Though we had expectations from this movie, we never thought it would perform so well. We had consecutive housefuls and even today matinee went houseful. The reason why it’s such a super-hit is that it has riveting action sequences and a perfect combination of Salman’s acting and Prabhu Deva’s direction,” said Govind Singh Rana, manager of the Prabhaat cinema.

With a four-star rating and excellent reviews on many online portals by film critics, Prabhu Deva, known dancer and actor of South films, has skilfully managed to weave in smaller narratives compared to the main story.

And to top it, music of the film is also adding variety. Songs such as “Tum jaan jaan kehke meri jaan le gaye...” and a foot-tapping song “Tera hi jalwa...” is also performing fairly well in the list of chartbusters. “I recently watched ‘Wanted’ and besides music I loved the fight scenes of Salman in the movie. Also I feel it’s a comeback for Sallu after so many flops, which were proving negative for his career,” said Aanchal, a movie buff.

However, with ongoing Navratras and Durga Puja, Dussehra and Diwali round the corner, it’s mostly students who are coming to enjoy the movie in the midst of holidays. “We are glad that this movie, since past four days, has been running houseful and it’s primarily the students who are enjoying power-packed dialogues and action scenes in the film. And in the coming weeks also we have high expectations from this movie,” said Chaudhary Ram Bahadur, manager of the Orient cinema.

Power Crisis
Delhi lends a helping hand
Raju William
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, September 23
Left with no option to tide over the anticipated critical power situation in coming winter, the Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited (UPCL) has, after much persuasion, brought Delhi around to provide 100 MW power under the advance swap power banking arrangement.

A grim power situation is expected this winter as the high demand of power in the state during summer left no scope for power banking that the UPCL used to do.

“Had we not made this arrangement in advance, the power situation between November and March next year would have forced us to go for minimum seven hours load shedding across the state. Under the arrangement, we will be getting power from Delhi for 16 hours a day,” said Jagmohan Lal, MD, UPCL.

Lesser generation in summer due to paucity of water in reservoirs, growth of load on account of vertical increase in consumption and almost no addition to the existing generation capacity in the state have made the situation come to this pass.

As against the average daily availability of about 25 Million Units (MU), the demand increased to 25.5 MU. Therefore, the usual banking of power could not be done this summer as surplus power was used up in return banking.

Sources said that Delhi reluctantly agreed for swapping in view of precarious power situation being faced by Uttarakhand. The UPCL had to work hard to convince that it would be able to return power taken under the swapping arrangement.

By September 30, Uttarakhand has to return 150 MU borrowed from Delhi between February and May this year under the power banking agreement. Due to this, Delhi too had faced a power crisis.

It is not that 100 MW from Delhi alone will be sufficient to overcome the crisis in winter. Sources said that the shortfall could be around 300 MW which means 7 MU per day.

To meet this huge shortfall, the UPCL will have to clinch similar swapping arrangements with other states under which the power borrowed in winter will have to be returned next summer.

Another option before UPCL is to purchase power. Though power can be overdrawn from the central pool, but it can be done only when frequency remains low.
