Batala
5 held for attack on Pamma:
The Batala police has arrested five persons in connection with an attack on Pawan Kumar Pamma. SSP Naresh Arora said today that Pamma was attacked by some persons and injured in a quarrel that took place near Khalsa Foundry here on September 8. A case under sections 323, 324, 427, 148 and 149, IPC, had been registered on the statement of Sardul Singh, driver of Pamma. Arora said Vijay Sandeep, Hanish Kumar, Ramesh Kumar, Harjit Pal and Rakesh Kumar had been arrested in the case and they had confessed to an assault on Pawan Kumar Pamma because of some personal enmity.

GNDTP junior engineers resent transfers:
The Council of Junior Engineers, Thermal Plant, have resented the transfers of junior engineers by the Director (Personnel), Punjab State Electricity Board. In a press release, Surinder Pal Singh Bedi, Secretary of the Council, said that the Board management had arbitrarily transferred junior engineer Ajmer Singh and some others. He added that a proper transfer policy should be formulated by the Board and only then engineers should be transferred. Bedi also claimed that while on the one hand, the Board was recruiting new engineers in thermal plants managed by the Board, on the other hand it was transferring engineers already working in the plants. He urged the Board management to take back the decision of transferring the junior engineers.

IOC meeting: Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) Ltd., Pipelines Division, Bathinda, conducted a mutual aid meeting on Wednesday. Representatives from IOCL marketing division, IOCL divisional office, BPCL, BPCL bottling plant and HIL attended the meeting. AK Singh, senior operations manager, IOCL, pipelines division, welcomed the members. Members also agreed to carry out regular meetings and increase participation in on site mock drills carried out by the various mutual aid industries. 

Tree plantation: The ABVP organised a tree plantation at the DAV College here on Wednesday. The plantation was dedicated to Bhagat Singh’s birth anniversary. Principal Dr JS Anand was the chief guest.

Orientation workshop for MLAs:
The legislators of Punjab are attending an orientation programme on the functioning of the Vidhan Sabha. About 50 legislators from diverse backgrounds and different political parties spent the entire forenoon on Tuesday learning about parliamentary procedures and practices of the Vidhan Sabha. The MLAs were acquainted with issues like call-attention motion, adjournment motion, zero hour, question hour, permanent committees and other special committees, etc and their functioning.

Doctor murder case Harassed domestic servant is culprit:
With the arrest of a domestic servant, the police has claimed to have solved the blind murder case of a Medical Officer of Primary Health Centre, Paldi, Dr Sham Singh, within six days of the crime. SP (D) Sushil Kumar told this correspondent here this afternoon that Dr Sham Singh’s domestic servant Balbir Singh had been arrested by the police. Allegedly the callous attitude of the deceased doctor towards Balbir Singh had compelled the latter to murder him. The Swift car (PB-07-W-6979) of Dr Sham Singh and the sharp-edged weapon used for killing him were recovered from Balbir. Dr Sham Singh was found murdered at his residence near Mahilpur on September 17. His car and Balbir had been missing since the recovery of the body. 

Blood-soaked shirt, bike of missing youth found: Rajiv Palta (27) of Ward 5, Tanda, has been missing under mysterious circumstances since Monday night. According to police sources, Rajiv left his house on his motorcycle for Harsi Pindat village at about 8.30 pm on Monday to attend a party at his friend’s house. When his family members came to know that he hadn’t reached the house of his friend till late in the night, they started searching for him. Later, his blood-soaked shirt and motorcycle were found in front of Government High School. On receiving information, the police reached the spot and started investigation. A case under section 364 of the IPC has been registered in this connection. 

3 ornament thieves caught: Three women members of a gold ornament thieves’ gang were nabbed by passengers of a mini-bus while they were trying to flee after removing a gold bangle from the arm of Usha Rani of Bassi Muda when she was going to her village in the mini-bus last evening. According to police sources, the members of the gang were identified as Balkaro, wife of Gurcharan Singh, Manjit Kaur, wife of Sikander, and Charanjit, wife of Meeka, all of Ram Singh Patti Bhadson, Patiala. During journey, they cut the gold bangle from the arm of Usha Rani and tried to lift it. But Usha caught them in the act and raised the alarm. Passengers took hold of them and handed them over to the police. The police booked them under section 379 of the IPC. 

217 gunny bags of wheat seized from godown: Acting on a tip-off, the Model Town police raided the godown of Devinder Kumar Dhir, a local commission agent, near New Grain Market here this afternoon and seized 145 bags of wheat from the godown and 72 bags of wheat loaded in a mini-truck (PB-07S-2232) parked at the godown. According to police sources, the wheat bags had been released from the godown of Warehousing Corporation on a release order of 266 bags for nine depot holders in the town by the District Food and Supplies Department and were meant for distribution among ration card holders. The police has registered a case under section 7 of the Essential Commodities Act and arrested Devinder Kumar Dhir, Ashok Kumar (driver of the mini-truck) and Bhag Singh, attendant of the godown. Kingpin Hukam Singh has absconded.

Cyclist crushed to death:
A cyclist was crushed to death under a speeding a truck on the busy Jalandhar-Ludhiana highway near Rama Mandi this morning. According to the police, Mukesh Kumar, a resident of Mehta, was run over by the truck, loaded with marble, heading towards Jalandhar from Ludhiana. The truck driver reportedly fled from the scene. The police has sent the body to civil hospital for postmortem and a case of rash and negligent driving has been registered against the driver at cantonment police station.

Hoarding behind price rise: CPI:
In view of the hoarding of essential commodities by hoarders, the CPI on Wednesday asked the Union Government to make an amendment in the Essential Commodities Act to abolish the provisions, which allow forward trading and unlimited storage of commodities. A member of the national executive of the CPI, Dr Joginder Dayal, said hoarding was the main reason behind the rising prices of essential commodities, like sugar.

PNB manager booked for pocketing customer’s Rs 40,000:
The police has booked Wassan Singh, Branch Manager of Punjab National Bank, Khemkaran, in a cheating case for fraudulently withdrawing an amount of Rs 40,000 from a customer’s account. A case under sections 420, 468, 471 of the IPC has been registered against him at a local city police station. Balbir Kaur, victim and resident of Mehdipur village, in a complaint to the police, alleged that he withdrew an amount of Rs 5,000 after filing the form but the manager tampered with the figures and withdrew an amount of Rs 45,000 and pocketed the remaining amount after giving her Rs 5,000. The police said the matter has been inquired by the Bhikhiwind DSP, who found prima-facie evidence.

Book released:
Governor Prabha Rau on Tuesday released a book titled “Himachal-The Paradise of India”, an encyclopedic study of the Himalayan hill state, authored by Dr Pramod Sharma. Rau lauded the efforts of the author in writing such a comprehensive and lively book on Himachal Pradesh. She said the book would prove beneficial to the readers and those want to undertake research. She also appreciated 700 photographs inserted in each page of the book, which portray the historic, scenic and religious aspects of the state. 

SUNDERNAGAR
Rape accused held: The police on Tuesday arrested Doda Ram (68), a resident of Mangheli village, from an interior area of Sundernagar for allegedly raping a nine-year-old girl on September 18. According to Sundernagar DSP RS Chandel, the accused was arrested from his native Mangheli village in Balag, interior panchayat of Mandi district. The accused was got medically examined and further interrogation was on.
