Congress leaders rally behind Harish Rawat
Haridwar, August 23 Rawat’s supporters have termed Brahamachari’s statement as unfortunate and linked it to personal enmity, as he had lost the Lok Sabha ticket race to Rawat. The latter had gone on to win by a record margin and was later appointed a Union minister of state in Manmohan Singh’s cabinet. Former city chief Purushottam Sharma said the statement of Brahamachari was an open violation of party ethics and discipline. “Expulsion of Brahamachari is inevitable if the party has to function and perform smoothly in the future, especially keeping in mind the 2012 assembly elections,” said Purushottam. In a letter to Uttarakhand Congress incharge RK Dhawan, state chief Yashpal Arya and disciplinary committee head Narendra Singh Bhandari have urged instant removal of the present state vice-president and cited that even in parliamentary elections in May Brahamachari was initially reluctant to campaign for Harish Rawat, which had set a wrong example for party workers. Spokesperson to Harish Rawat Rajesh Rastogi said some persons were trying to fuel communal tensions, which does not augur well for Congress. Youth Congress activists too have come down heavily on the state vice-president and even burnt his effigy as a mark of protest. |

Classic Movies
Dehradun, August 23 ‘Kanchenjungha’ was Ray's first original screenplay and for the first time, he was shooting in colour. The film shows about 100 minutes (in real time) in the life of a group of rich Bengalis on vacation. Unlike the usual Ray films, it has a fragmented narrative with no central characters, and no straight narrative in the classical sense. A wealthy family of Calcutta's industrial bourgeoisie is vacationing in Darjeeling, at the foot of Mt Kanchenjunga, the second highest peak of the Himalayas. The family members are dominated by the figure of the father, Indranath, who expects all of them to obey his will. Several long walks, embellished by long conversations, sow various seeds of crisis into the family's midst: for example, a couple breaks up when the younger daughter rejects the staid, respectable engineer her father wants her to marry. Instead, she seems attracted to Ashok, a young student of modest means who has the nerve to refuse the job that the elderly Indranath offers him. REACH Talkies shows movies by renowned film directors every week on Sundays at 4 pm at the KDMIPE mini auditorium in ONGC, Kaulagarh Road campus. Ran (adaptation of Shakespeare’s King Lear) by Akira Kurosawa will be screened next Sunday, August 30 at the same venue. |
