Power Theft
Roorkee, August 16 The distribution losses include power lost during transmission and through theft. The authorities said that a lot of amount was being spent on the transmission system to reduce the losses. They said that it was unlikely that the distribution losses would go up without power pilferage. In the rural areas, most of household and agriculture connections have been stealing power through ‘kundi’ connections and situation in urban as well as industrial areas is not much different. During surprise checks, the board officials had reportedly found that every fifth meter in the urban areas had been tampered with to reduce its speed. According to reports, the department loses a whopping amount of Rs 75 crore every month. The deputy general manager of UPCL, Roorkee, MS Chandola, said that around 15 million units were being stolen every month. “The department is losing around Rs 75 crore per month due to the pilferage," said Chandola. To curb the menace, the authorities have decided to impose double fine if found any tampering in the electricity meter. “We are conducting surprise checks in and around the town. No violator would be spared,” said Chandola. He also added that the department has been facing tough challenge in realisation of due payments, which touches the amount of around 80 crore in Roorkee region. “The offenders include both government and non-government institutes. To realise the hefty due amounts, we have also hired services of a private party,” said
Chandola. |

Tayaji Memorial
Tournament
Roorkee, August 16 The continuous financial crunch, being faced by the organisers, is said to be the reason behind calling off the tournament, which had been gracing the town since 1951.
“Due to financial crisis, we are unable to conduct the tournament this time,” announced Ram Bhuj Bhutani, the organising secretary of the tournament. The budget of conducting one edition now runs in several lakhs. Last year, the organisers claimed to have spent over Rs 4 lakh. The main source of the funding largely depends on the donations by the people of Roorkee and nearby areas, local Army outfit BEG and IIT. Eighty-five-years-old Bhutani, who is also one of the founder members of the tourney said that they have not even started the preparations for holding the tournament this time. “Every year, the tourney took place in January or February but we started our work, which include selection of teams, fund management, seeking approval of top volleyball bodies and booking of venues, etc in July or August. But this time, we all are silent as the organising committee has not even a single penny in its kitty,” said Bhutani. It is not that we have not approached government agencies or other big houses for aid but nobody comes forward for the help, he added. “For the past couple of years, we have been finding it hard to manage funds to run the show. But now we are fed up. In the absence of any financial help from government agency, big corporate houses or regular sponsorship, it has become very difficult to continue the tournament,” said Bhutani adding that the resolution over the forever closing of the tournament is underway and is likely to be passed by the organisers any time. The tournament, started in 1951 by Krishan Raj (who was fondly called as Tayaji among the peers) with the help of some local players and the game lovers, used to witness many top teams as well as the players of the country in action every year. Even foreign teams (Railway Pakistan in 1956 and Russia in 1962) have participated in it. The name of the tournament (Taya Ji Memorial All-India Volleyball Tournament) was changed in 1979 after the death of Krishan Raj in the same year. “I am sad that the glorious journey of this Volleyball Federation of India-backed tournament is going to be culminated. Only regular financial help from government or big sponsors can save it,” said Bhutani. |

Classic
Dehradun, August 16 The Last Emperor is a biopic about the life of Pu Yi, last Emperor of China, whose autobiography was the base for the screenplay written by Mark Peploe and Bernardo Bertolucci. Yi’s life is depicted from his ascension to the throne as a small boy to his imprisonment and political rehabilitation by the Chinese Communist authorities. It was the first feature film for which the producers were authorised by the Chinese government to film in Beijing. The film opens in 1950 with Yi's re-entry into the just-proclaimed People’s Republic of China as a prisoner and war criminal, having been captured by the Red Army when the Soviet Union entered the Pacific War in 1945 (Soviet invasion of Manchuria) and put under Soviet custody for five years. Yi attempts suicide, which only renders him unconscious, and in a flashback, apparently triggered as a dream, Yi relives his first entry, with his nurse, in the Forbidden City. The film won nine Academy Awards, including best picture and best director. Film enthusiasts sat through the three-and-a-half-hour long movie. Judging by the fact that the number of REACH Talkies members has crossed 25 (the membership includes the spouse of the member), it is evident that the film club movement is indeed gaining momentum. The gathering was graced, among others, by Tarun Chakraborty, executive director of the ONGC and IG RS Meena. REACH Talkies shows movies by renowned film directors every week on Sundays at 4 pm at the KDMIPE mini auditorium in the ONGC, Kaulagarh Road campus. Kapurush-o-Mahapurush by Satyajit Ray will be screened next Sunday, August 23, at the same venue. |
